Power Carving - No Chisels required.

When I was asked to make a frame for Mark’s Memorial I wanted to do an inlay and I bought a router base that is used in the string instrument industry. It uses a Dremel of a Fordem as the power source. I select the Foredom option. That required the purchase of another new tool. So thats not all bad. I bought the #5200 model It contains two hand pieces, but neither of them would fit on the router base i selected, so I had to purchase a hand piece that fit the router base. The Route...
A Router for Inlays
637 days ago by Karson | 14 comments »
When i was asked to make the frame for mark’s Memorial I wanted to do an inlay. I’d seen a couple of small routers on the web and I’d seen what mark DeCou does for cutting the outlines on his letter carving. This router came from Steward-MacDonald. They make tools for the construction and repair of string instruments. This is their router being used for an inlay in a guitar. I bought the router as a kit which contains an air pump and an edge guide. The edge guide i...

Having followed late last year it was noted with great sadness that this company had closed it doors. It supposedly made the greatest rasps for woodworkers in the world. Each one is handcrafted by an artisan in France who had to train for 3 years to until they are allowed to forge, heat treat and hand stitch a rasp whose teeth are cut very regular, but always spaced a bit little off with each tooth cutting a slightly different path than its predecessor. This results in a tool that is both po...
Mortiser for the masses

I had been looking at this mortiser for sale by Wilke Tools in PA. It was being sold at $245 plus shipping. And then one time I went looking again and they had it for sale at $185.00 I ordered it. It didn’t come with any chisels. What sets this mortiser apart from others for a reasonable price is that it has an X, Y and Z alignment. The table as shown in the two pictures moves from left to right about 7” so you can cut a 7” mortise without loosing the grip on the piece...

Well you could get by without them. $15 a pair from Rockler. What the heck are they? They hold aux. fences and stopblocks to your existing rip fence, for crosscutting and dado operations where the blade would otherwise obliterate your existing fence. Just rip a piece of ply, melamine, or other stable stock, drill two holes for the clamps, and clamp away. The biesemeyer aux. fences with clamps are around $150. The only advantage I see is that their fence is exactly 1” thic...
Great Machine, intructions leave something to be desired.

I purchased this machine after reading a lot of top reviews. My inital take on the machine was it is pretty well made. However, when I went to set it up, the instructions were very lacking…there were several steps missing, and they did not even address how to attach the upper work hold down clamp. After l looking closely at the pictures on the web, I finally figured out how to install it. The machine was very stiff to use at first. After a run of about 10 mortices, I reshapred the ch...
light and strong

This drill is great. It has plenty of power. The best part is it only wieghs about 3 lbs. I bought this drill about one month ago. It seems like I haven’t put is down since. I looked over several drills before I bought this one. Most woodworkers can do fine with a 14.4v drill. I looked at several of them. I figured I could get one that wieghs less than a 14.4v, but was stronger at the same time. That is why I chose this. Another cool feature is the LED light right above the trigger. I ...
Great Saw for a Great Price

This is my first Miter Saw so i have nothing to compare it to but i think that it is a great Miter Saw. Just to start off this saw costs 140$ at Lowe’s and i bought mine without a laser. A wise man once told me that the blade does that cutting and not the laser, and he wants to see where the actual thing that’s doing the actual cutting is going to actually cut. Now back to the saw. it came ready to run right out of the box and all the different angles that i checked were right ...
Cheap Lathe Conversion
637 days ago by BillyUP | 8 comments »
There was a yard sale ad that said: “Lathe with tools, $40”, so I hustled right out.I found a “Junk” French or Canadian lathe that is only good for turning Spindle work, but came with about $300 worth of new Craftsman tools. The tools were an assortment of things I did not have.I converted the lathe to a “Buffing machine”, using a threaded rod that is screwed into two turned wood blocks. I will be adding more buffing wheels by simply moving these two alon...
One square, two square...

...on your way to four-square, this jointer just can’t be beat. I wasn’t looking for high end professional quality in a jointer, and I wanted something more than a benchtop unit. I came across this jointer available at your local HD for $399. I decided to buy it based on the predominance of 4 and 5 star reviews at their site. The unit is easy to assemble, however you should definitely have two bodies to handle delivery, and physical assembly. (I can pickup my DeWalt 735 p...
