Even in a bad saw, it makes great cuts

Even in a bad saw, it makes great cuts

When I first used my POS Firestorm circular saw, I had problems with it binding up during rips. Well, I blamed the blade and went to Lowe’s for a replacement. I came across the Freud Avanti blade. Since I didn’t want to switch out blades for different functions, I went for a good combination blade. The blade I picked up isn’t the one in the picture (courtesy of the internet), as mine is a 40T combination blade, but the important thing is the cut. The Avanti blade was ...

Irwin XP, One handed bar clamps/spreaders

Irwin XP, One handed bar clamps/spreaders

I received a pair of these 12’’ clamps as a gift. I have never used one handed clamps before this pair. Now whenever I have a clamping job, I grab these right away. It’s almost like having an extra hand, & they have plenty of clamping power. They provide 550 lbs of one-handed force (900 lbs of two-handed force). I also like the soft no-slip jaws, & you can reverse them to push things apart, such as chair rungs, or when dry fitting cabinet parts. ...

Variety, Tips, Inspiration

Variety, Tips, Inspiration

(photo from www.canadianwoodworking.com) I always look forward to receiving my next issue of the Canadian Woodworking magazine. Each issue is filled with: several projects to complete, lots of tips skill building variety of furniture building, carving, and other woodworking techniques I think that that is my best part, that they mix the types of woodworking and do not just focus on furniture building. They also, in my opinion, cater to the skilled woodworker as well as the...

Surprisingly Good

Surprisingly Good

2363 days ago by Tomcat1066 | 17 comments »

Black & Decker tools suck. That’s the general consensus from woodworkers the world over. After my Firestorm circular saw couldn’t rip a piece of 4/4 pine, I tend to agree. However, the Workmate is the exception. This sweet little puppy is just the ticket for a new woodworker. In one little package, you get a workbench, a vise, and even saw horses. It’s fairly easy to assemble, but the instructions could be better. In an effort to put as few steps as possible on ...

Who needs a lift?

Who needs a lift?

After starting a forum topic recently to solicit opinions about what type of variable-speed router I should buy to leave mounted in my table for the most part, I eventually decided to go with the Trtion MOF001KC 2 1/4 HP plunge router. I thought hard about going with a more powerful motor, but I decided that my needs at the present time just didn’t justify it. If I decide I need something bigger later on, I figured the 2 1/4 would still be a dandy machine to have around for handheld wo...

First Lathe

First Lathe

Let me start by getting the disclaimer out of the way. I am a novice when it comes to turning. I have turned a few chess sets and utility shop items in the past on borrowed lathes. I really love the meditative aspects of curling wood. So, when my wife was curious if we could possibly turn out some candle sticks (she was a professional candlemaker for 12 years) I rose to the occasion and did nothing to quell the creative brain storming. I lauded the benefits of the lathe and bombarded her wit...

Porter-Cable Razor - 10" TS Blade

Porter-Cable Razor - 10" TS Blade

2368 days ago by Jeff | 13 comments »

NOTE: the model number for the TS blade is 100VT50 Just as stated in the review for the circular saw blade, this is a great blade. I went to my local supplier for a thin-kerf Woodworker II but they were out. The guy I usually talk to told me I should give it a try. He makes picture frames for his father (an artist) on the side and swears by the miters you can get with it. He gave me a personal guarantee that if I didn’t like it after 30 days. He would take it back. No questions asked...

Incra - A great router fence

Incra - A great router fence

I purchased this after seeing it at the Woodworkers show in Dallas this year. I didn’t get it at the show becausewoodpeckers had it cheaper and free shipping. (Saved $80) I have been looking at it for a while, but thought what’s the big deal, my fence works just fine. Then atthe show I saw some features that I liked. Now, like at all shows they have nice slick demos that they doto make their product look simple and easy. Well, for the most part it is simple and easy. The sys...

solid joiner for the price

solid joiner for the price

2368 days ago by KDL | 12 comments »

I bought this joiner two years ago after talking to a few woodworkers/salesmen I trust. I have used it on two large cabinets, a small table, and a small sideboard. On the whole, I think it’s a good machine for a very fair price. There are higher-end joiners that are, I’m sure, really slick. But for the money, this is a good tool, and when I bought it, it was definitely the best in its class. It comes with: The joiner, dust bag, wrenches, regular and face-frame blades, manua...
