Ridgid MS1290LZ Sliding Compound Miter Saw

I am reasonably new to woodworking, if one can call getting into it seriously only four years ago as “new.” I will also note that it was four years ago that I retired from a 35-year career at a university library. Once I retired I told my wife that I wanted to get a few tools so that it would be easier to do home-improvement projects. One thing led to another and now I have a workshop full of tools. My woodworking neophyte status notwithstanding, I am not new to reviewing produ...

Master Woodworking Plans

Master Woodworking Plans

10-12-2008 08:45 AM by disgruntled | 8 comments »

The online digital purchase of the Master Woodworking Plans turned out to be a great disappointment.Their website advertises in a very deceiving way plenty of wood working plans that in reality are just a collections of outside links to other websites in cyberspace where one has to sift through more ads to finally realize you can buy their plans. I was very disappointed since the same result can be achieved by searching in any search engine and leave this review so others might be able to r...

Dewalt DC845KA Impact Driver

Dewalt DC845KA Impact Driver

10-11-2008 04:11 AM by Will Mego | 2 comments »

Thus far, I love everything about this driver! Faced with a roof job on my folks terribly rotten roof, and recalling the last time I was driving screws through simple plain old pine and how I couldn’t get screw in without stripping it, I decided to bite the bullet, and buy an impact driver. I looked at a few, but decided to splurge and get the 18V dewalt (in a kit, which included the 2 batteries). I’m glad I did. So far, it drives pretty much ANYTHING through ANYTHING. It’...

Pimp My Plane

Pimp My Plane

10-06-2008 07:04 PM by Doug S. | 15 comments »

I’d been lusting after an Infill plane for a while and this one jumped up and bit me. Talking with Ron Brese, I decided to Pimp My Plane with something a bit extra on the level cap screw. So after getting the counterbored screw and some abalone and epoxy, here’s the inlaid cap screw. So far I’ve tried this out on Jatoba, Red Oak, Ipe, Purpleheart, Mango, and Maple, all with excellent resuls. It really doesn’t matter whether you plane with or against the grain a...

Back Savor (Needed this a long time ago!)

On my recent trip to the IWF in Atlanta I came across this little jewl. Its made by Southworth. Its an electric hydraulic lift table. Comes fully assembled ready to go, Just plug it in and your set. The lifting capacity is 1500 lbs. with the press of a foot pedal. The top measures 30’ x 60”. Starting at 6” off the floor and rasing to 42” at its tallest position. This is a jewl! I wish I had this a very long time ago. I’ve only been using for a few day...

Table works great though installation is finicky

Table works great though installation is finicky

09-30-2008 06:04 PM by JLYoung | 8 comments »

I ordered this router table insert plate on a Thursday afternoon and received it on Monday afternoon which I think is an excellent delivery time. The shipment arrived well packaged with everything in it. The instructions to install this thing are very detailed and laid out in a logical step by step manner, which though very complex and daunting upon first review, became quite logical once you take the time to follow the instruction procedure. It took me quite a bit of time to get this plat...

Grizzly 8" jointer comparisions

Grizzly 8" jointer comparisions

09-30-2008 06:18 AM by tooldad | 21 comments »

It is not too often someone other than a writer from a woodworking magazine gets to buy 2 different models of the same tool and compare them. I looked through the Grizzly catalog and website and did some paper comparision. I chose the G0586 for the school shop. It was $100 cheaper and had handwheel adjustments for both the tables and the fence. Once I got down to Springfield to pickup the tools, I went shopping for myself (this was planned) My first intention was to get the same jointe...

New Fence System For Williams and Hussey

New Fence System For Williams and Hussey

For those who own a Williams and Hussey molder, take a look at these new fence clamps (www.clampthis.com)These are innexpensive fence clamps that work great. They are fantastic for quickly changing over to different molding knives or making quick adjustments. It also works with the ShopFox molder/planerThe web site also features a videoThis fence system is in sharp contrast to the clumsey and expensive system that Williams and Hussey came out with just recently.

I won a 2nd prize in Gorilla Glue Challenge. Winners received Gorilla Glue’s products and a Gorilla Glue t-shirt. Got a nice box of various Gorilla glues and a roll of tape. I’ve been using Gorilla Glue products for years, so it was a excellent prize. Peggy enjoys wearing the Gorilla tee-shirt too. Today I used the tape and want to share a handy use for them. My tile KILN needed an element changed . Kiln sits on the concrete floor of my back porch, It is a front loading ki...

Tormek T7 Sharpening System

Tormek T7 Sharpening System

09-23-2008 05:25 PM by coloradoclimber | 17 comments »

Well, it was sharpening time again this weekend, chisels, plane irons, kitchen knives, pocket knives, scissors, turning gouges and chisels, anything else I could find that had an edge that needed sharpening. I’ve hand sharpened all of my knives and tools using wet, dry, oil, and diamond stones for the last 20 years. Bench stones works pretty well and I’m able to get shaving quality edges every time. So why change? Well, because hand sharpening takes a long time. I keep ad...
