Benjamin's Best 6 piece Anniversary Set

Benjamin's Best 6 piece Anniversary Set

I purchased this set of tools with a $10 coupon from Penn State, and have had about a week to put them to use. For the most part these are decent chisels, hold an edge well, and are beefy enough to prevent chatter.I knocked off one star due to the length of the chisel as a whole. I was expecting them to be a bit longer, They will suffice for work on my midi-lathe, but if you are getting into larger pieces I could foresee them being a bit of a hindrance. The chisels came with a decent g...

Sweet little tool

Sweet little tool

This is one of those tools that you buy for specific uses, so naturally I hemmed and haw for a while before purchasing. Over the last few months I have experienced using the Fein tool from time to time on different job sites. Once you use this type of tool you under stand the convenience, instead of breaking out you Japanese saw. I’m not one for long winded review, but I will say this Bosch always makes a quality tool and the quality, power and easy of use are on point with the Fein plus it...

Ridgid dp1550

Okay, I must admit that I’m becoming a Ridgid Fan. I used to think of them as just home depots in house brand. But Then I found out that they are made by emerson electric, the same company that made my, old Craftsman stuff that lasted forever. Any way I have been upgrading my shop, and I needed to replace myolder Luddel Benchtop drill press. So naturally, I went shopping. After reading many reviews of this one, I took the plunge. I’m not sorry I did, this is a good solid drill pre...

Laguna Tools LT 14 SUV Bandsaw Review - So very close!

Laguna Tools LT 14 SUV Bandsaw Review - So very close!

I first saw a Laguna Bandsaw in 2006 at the Calgary Woodworking Show. Man was it impressive! It just oozed quality. And when they cut a burl veneer slice, it looked like it barely needed sanding. What can I say – I was hooked (I still have that veneer slice). However at the time I didn’t have the money for it and went on to purchase something else. I always kept that demo in mind. After trying for three years to get my bandsaw to accurately cut wood and spending a mini fortune ...

Smoothes air flow. HUGE improvement for dust collection on smaller machines.

Smoothes air flow. HUGE improvement for dust collection on smaller machines.

To be blunt, I have never been truly happy with the dust collection on my Ryobi AP1301 13” planer. I mean it works and all, but it’s never worked well. Pulling from a shop vac fitted with a separator and a LOT of hose, I have always felt that the ribbed hose robbed me of too much air flow to be truly effective… I have used the square edge DC fittings the ones that step down at an almost 90 degree angle like the ones I got from Rockler, and was never pleased with the resul...

MLW Tool Box DVD and Grand Slam Tools 4-PAK Holiday Special

12-12-2009 04:55 PM by FlWoodRat | 8 comments »

Fellow Lumberjocks, Tommy MacDonald at Major League Woodworking has done it again. Tommy is offering his first MLW DVD and the Grand Slam Tools 4-Pak as a Holiday Special for only $100. I’m very happy to have taken advantage of the opportunity. Yesterday I received my set. As expected, it was impecably packaged. Since Tommy’s 4-Pak (Bench Bat, Marking Gauge and two 1:6 paring blocks) has already been reviewed here, I will focus on the MLW Tool Box Project #1 DVD. The DVD is ...

Shark Pro CNC Router

Shark Pro CNC Router

12-11-2009 09:42 PM by Mike Pientka | 9 comments »

When the Shark was initially released, I traveled 70 miles to the nearest Rockler store to scrutinize it. I had to put my Engineer’s cap on to keep remembering there are continual tradeoffs between cost and performance; from all the homework I did I knew what specs were important and where I could give. At first I was apprehensive the polymer frame would flex too much. or the rod & linear bearing construction with a central drive screw would bind. Both of these turned out to be no...

Clean your House with a Ridgid Vac

Clean your House with a Ridgid Vac

12-10-2009 09:16 PM by d_webb | 22 comments »

Yeah that’s right, I clean my house with a shop vac. I recently learned that normal vacuum cleaners are a joke compared to shop vacs. Earlier this summer when my lame hoover choked on penny, I decided it was time to purchase a worthwhile vacuum cleaner. After doing some vacuum research, it appeared the best thing on the market was a Dyson. However, I was in no mood to spend $50,000 on a vacuum cleaner that has a one wheel/ball thingy (maybe in better economic times). Then it hit me, ...

Doweling made very simple at a very affordable price

Doweling made very simple at a very affordable price

12-10-2009 05:54 PM by David Craig | 20 comments »

I am relatively new to the field of woodworking and my experience with more complex joinery is very limited, so I appreciate any device/jig/contraption that makes my entry into this area a little more simple. I have seen many different types of doweling jigs out there, but Wolfcraft put together an item that is both inexpensive and very simple to use. The Wolfcraft 3751405 Dowel Pro Doweling Jig Kit comes with the doweling jig pictured, an extra board clamp to keep the board you are working o...
