Why I didn't end up getting this one

Why I didn't end up getting this one

03-16-2009 03:33 PM by PurpLev | 30 comments »

For lack of current online info on this saw, I thought someone might be of use to the bits of info I’ve been able to get on this saw after contacting SteelCity (which knows no details on this saw yet) and going to Woodcraft and seeing it live – which was very dissapointing. The first disappointment was when I saw the photo that woodcraft posted of this new saw which was completely different then what Steelcity had posted in their ‘upcoming new products’ flyer. I had...

Indeed a great tool

Indeed a great tool

Given that when available I like USA or German made tools, I researched this tool on the Web and found nothing available. The LION Pootatuck has been dicontinued and it appears all stock depleted. Not even a used one on e-bay. Went ahead and order one from Grizzly and was plesantly surprised by the quality of this tool.It was right on the money for both the 45 and 90 degrees preset on the right and left sides. Not that is hard to calibrate it if you need to, but I have several highly accura...

Traditional Woodworking Tools

Traditional Woodworking Tools

03-16-2009 05:55 AM by Cam | 0 comments »

At a recent Wood Show I met a gentlemen by the name of Graham Blackburn, an Englishman that was the Hand Tool Rodeo expert giving presentations. I sat through all of his seminars and learned more in those hours that I ever had. I’ve gone after every book and web site I could get my hands on and all of those fall in the shadow of his book, Traditional Woodworking Hand Tools. This hardcover book is written like good books used to be, with thick rich pages and beautiful headings and tit...

Harbor Freight 13" DP (Model 38142)

Harbor Freight 13" DP (Model 38142)

03-14-2009 02:51 PM by knotscott | 8 comments »

This 13” DP is a far cry from my most prestigious tool, and Harbor Freight’s “Central Machinery” brand doesn’t typically conjure up tons of confidence and the obligatory “Tim the tool man Taylor” grunts that the big names will, but this particular purchase has been too good to not give the credit that’s due. The 38142 is a 13”, 16 speed, 3/4 hp benchtop drill press. It weighs in at a respectable 125#, and stands over 40” tall. It ...

Incra T-rule very nice indeed

Incra T-rule very nice indeed

A short while back I purchased the Incra 6” T-rule. it is a small piece of t-track with a precision rule attached to it. Two knobs allow you to slide the rule along the t-track to make a square out of it. The thing has scales and numbers galore and if you don’t have new eyes, then like me you may need your magnifiers. Even though, the numbers and lines are extremely crisp and clear. It has scales for 1/16”, 1/32”, and 1/64”’s The thing that makes this rule ...

Infinity's 010-060 - Fine Crosscuts and General Purpose Versatility In One Blade

Infinity's 010-060 - Fine Crosscuts and General Purpose Versatility In One Blade

This is an amazingly clean cutting blade and it happens to have good versatility too. The Hi-ATB teeth are exceptional for crosscutting, but it also rips very cleanly in material to ~ 6/4”. It’ll excel in fine veneered plywood, melamine, hardwood, or other laminate, and is versatile enough to be used for general purpose work. It’s cleaner cutting than my Forrest WWII, Ridge Carbide, Tenryu, DW7657, and Infinity Combomax, though it doesn’t rip as aggressively. It’...

Forrest WWII 30T....the other Forrest blade

Forrest WWII 30T....the other Forrest blade

As a long time satisfied owner of the 40T WWII, the lesser known 30T WWII is a blade that I’ve wanted to try for quite a while. A rare sale price of $64 shipped was all the encouragement I needed. It’s 40T big brother is more popular and very highly rated across the industry, but we hear very little about this extremely capable 30T version. As far as I’m concerned, the silence should end…this is a terrific blade! The WW10307100 features the same geometry, materials of...

Incra V27 Basic Miter Gauge

03-13-2009 03:20 AM by knotscott | 8 comments »

The V27 is Incra’s entry level basic gauge retailing at about $60 and is constructed primarily of sturdy steel with some well placed nylon trim pieces. The bottom of the steel protractor head glides on a nylon pad that rides along the table surface. The Incra has a “GlideLOCK” miter bar that consists of 4 expandable nylon adjustment spacers in the bar to be perfectly taylor fitted to the standard 3/4”x3/8” miter slot on your saw. There is a removable t-clip on th...

Delta 50-760 1 1/2 HP Dust Collector - Not so Pleased

Delta 50-760 1 1/2 HP Dust Collector - Not so Pleased

I see several satisified user with good reviews on this product. However it has a flaw that bugs me, and is not acceptable. I bought one new in December. The unit does a very good job with collection, is reasonably quiet and I’m happy with that. But new, right out of the box I found a problem. The rod that holds up the dust filter bag attaches to the top/side of the unit’s housing. The first time I moved the unit the rod hung on an over head beam and even though it wasnR...

03-12-2009 12:42 AM by knotscott | 8 comments »

The W1677 is a 3hp, 10”, left tilt, triple belt drive industrial cabinet saw with a Shop Fox Classic t-square style fence that offers 26” rip capacity. Shop Fox is part of the Woodstock International group, which is also associated with Grizzly. Both companies are owned by businessman, luthier, and woodworker, Shiraz Balolia. For all intents and purposes, the Shop Fox W1677 and Grizzly G1023SL are identical except for color, retail circumstances, and warranty. The 1677 has two 10...
