General Maxi-Lathe 25-100

General Maxi-Lathe 25-100

2063 days ago by Chris Wright | 3 comments »

General makes two mid size lathes, the 25-100 and the 25-200. They are almost identical except that the 25-100 has a 1/2 HP motor with 6 speed stacked pulley, compared to the 25-200 having a 3/4 HP variable speed motor and the headstock assemble is capable of rotating for outbound turning. I was lucky enough to have a 25-100 donated to the shop and I’ve enjoyed using it now for the past few months. It is capable of turning small bowls, pens and spindles. I did notice when turning a ...

About a month ago, I decided I wanted another lathe. I was getting frustrated with my King Mini Lathe in regards to vibration and having to constantly switch the belt to change speeds. I had about $1000-$1200 which put me in the category of mid level lathe. It came down to a Craftex CT128 which is a copy of the Laguna 18/47 and the Nova 1624-44. The Craftex is bigger, has a bit more horse power, includes variable speed and an incredibly sturdy stand. The biggest negatives were that it was 2...

worked the saw hard for 2 years

worked the saw hard for 2 years

2066 days ago by Todd McDonald "2 Bored Saws" | 2 comments »

I bought that same saw (Hitachi) two years ago, I have worked it hard cutting 3×3x8’ oak up into 1×1x8’ then into 1×1x5 inches, it has never quit me. I threw that plastic dust collection pan in the trash, and make my own that fits a 4” duct. I am about to buy another one. This saw has made me alot of money. I don’t use it every day, but every other day I work the crap out of it. I am not a pro (not close) just a extra money type a job. All my cuts ...

exactly the jointer for my needs, in fact its more jointer than i will likely ever need!!

i really needed to get a tool like this into my shop, and i am very happy to state this is my first jointer, and mighty nice tool indeed! i am very spoiled to have something this nice at my disposal! Grizzly was selling these units as blem’s through their eBay storefront. the cost savings was substantial and it was stated that the paint was uneven, blotchy, and not up to Grizzly standards. the tool still carried a full factory warranty on all parts other than the paint finish. I deci...

I'm a bit on the cheap side

I'm a bit on the cheap side

2067 days ago by Shopsmithtom | 9 comments »

I recently read (in Fine Woodworking Magazine # 197, April, 2008) a review of several brands of forstner bits and decided that my Harbor Freight 7 piece set (1/4” – 1”) bought on sale for $5.00 was obsolete. That set, by the way, served me well for the money spent…as anyone who has read anything I’ve added to this sight in the past may remember, I’m really cheap… but I really needed more larger bit sizes. After reading the article, I noted that the...

Fully Automatic Weapon

Fully Automatic Weapon

So, this guy comes to the office to help one of the girls get into a cabinet that had a lost key. I heard all kinds of racket going on over there and thought I better sniff around. It’s a good thing I did because look what I saw. This is a drill with a 36 Volt Battery, two lights with 12 LEDs each, and a shoulder strap. The shoulder strap wasn’t just to help handle the weight, which I estimate at 5lbs, it was also to help with the torque. When you pull the trigger on this thi...

K-body clamp extenders

K-body clamp extenders

2075 days ago by dsb1829 | 7 comments »

I picked up a set of the K-body clamp extenders a couple months back from Woodcraft. I had a table project coming up and knew that clamping the long aprons would require clamps in excess of the 50 inchers that I had. I was initially impressed by the solid construction of these. Honestly I think you would get back near half of the price in scrap value on the billet. The bolts are massive. The extrusion is formed to match the contours of the steel rails of the K-body clamps. Well last n...

Lee Valley Brad Point Bits - Set of Seven

Lee Valley Brad Point Bits - Set of Seven

2076 days ago by ChicoWoodnut | 7 comments »

I was in need of some brad point bits to drill holes for a set of ball catches I am installing. I have been using regular twist bits and needed something with a centering guide. My set of Irwin Jennings-pattern auger bits don’t go to 1/4”. I looked at brad point bits at the Borg and didn’t like any of the ones I saw. The lip was simply a point ground into the edge of the radial cutter. It didn’t look like it would leave a clean hole on entry and that is what I am ...

Protect Your Ears

Protect Your Ears

2078 days ago by Mike Lingenfelter | 10 comments »

Recently one my posts came up where I talked about ZEM hearing protection. At the time I was amazing at how well they worked. It’s been over a year now of using them, and I won’t use anything else now. They are very comfortable to wear, for long periods if needed. They are lightweight and don’t have to go “deep” into the ear canal. The foam earpieces just enter the outside of the ear canal. They really don’t feel like they are in your ear, like other earplugs. I’m not sure if I can r...
