Starting an Outdoor Furniture Manufacturing Business

For as long as I can remember there have discussions here at Lumber Jocks about doing woodworking as a business or getting paid for the master pieces that come out of our shops. I know everyone that has enjoyed wood working or any other creative outlet has said to them self “How can I do this and make a living at it”? Well I ask the same question every time I am in the shop. I found what I consider about the most straight up and to the point, down and dirty “Here is how it’s done, but it’s no...

Laguna LT 18 3000

Laguna LT 18 3000

I purchased this saw in 01\10. Heavy brute to move into the shop. Set up was straight forward even if no manual was supplied. There is now a very good video on the Laguna website that provides some helpful setup tips. The factory settings proved to be right on with little or no adjustment. The saw runs quietly with no vibration. The start capacitor failed after about two hours. I received instant attention from the Laguna service people, but someone forgot to mail the part! Arrived today 05/1...

You Get What You Paid For

Sorry to say that this little sander only gets a two star rating. I have had this sander less than a year and the bearing under the sanding plate has froze. It had such potential. ConsThe loading of sandpaper is not that great. But once you get the paper aligned and under the holders its OK. Loud Dust control not great and shop vac couldn’t be connected to the port. The sander has been used maybe 6 times. The past two days it was being used to sand the planter boxes and benc...

Grinding wheel dresser

Grinding wheel dresser

Did you ever do something dumb, then follow up with something stupid? OK, I’m the only one. Anyway,I wore a big groove down the center of my grinder that I sharpen lathe tools on. Then I went to Sears and got this. This is a good idea, it just doesn’t do a good job. The wheel I was dressing is 120 grit aluminum oxide. I assumed this would be a harder material. I quickly wore this out and still had a groove. The instructions did say the plastic would wear down as you use it. Th...

CHARLES NEIL BLOTCH CONTROL

Hey friends and neighborsI received my can of Charles Neils Blotch control almost a week ago and I have been waiting to give it a try due to my work schedule I decided to give it a go on some poplar knowing it’s one of the worst woods to blotch when stain is applied.I sanded this six quarter piece of poplar as I would preparing for staining for all woods I’m about to finish going through the grits up to 220 grit as the instructions suggest. I then applied a first coat of blotch c...

HTC 2000 Universal Mobile Base

HTC 2000 Universal Mobile Base

I purchased 2 of these units one for my Jet 6” jointer and one for a Powermatic 2800 drill press. By the manufacture specs the 6” jointer weighs 237lbs and the drill press weights in at 209lbs. The HTC works well for both applications. However, I question the load rating of 500lbs on these units I don’t see it being able to support my table saw, that is spece’d at 456 lbs., long term. Pros:Instructions are easy to follow and assembly is straight foreword it took about 15 per unit. ...

The Beast!

The Beast!

I purchased the PM 2800 two weeks ago and this thing is a BEAST. I originally intended on purchasing the Delta 20-950 but Delta has completely discontinued the line with no intentions of reviving it – I contacted Delta directly before I pulled the trigger on the Powermatic. I would have like the extra 2 inches the Delta offered and the extra 1-5/8” on quill travel but I think I’m going to be extremely happy with the PM. Pros:1 hp motor – perfect size for my shop True variable ...

Poor Man's Festool

Poor Man's Festool

Intro For the longest time I wanted to get the Festool CT-33 (I would also be satisfied with the 22 version) as I believe that to be the flagship unit of the company – sure they make exceptional tools, but this one is by far their best contender in my opinion. Problem is – for my hobby use, it’s just beyond what I can justify to spend on a small dust extractor. A month ago, someone posted the PC 7810 vacuum on craigslist, but it was in a very used condition, and I felt...

Installation issues ( it should "no" star for the moment)

Installation issues ( it should "no" star for the moment)

I went to buy this fence last Thursday to mount it on my HF band saw.I mounted it Saturday and yesterday Sunday.I am mechanic by trade and it is my job to make stuff work, no matter what.Well, this fence was a challenge. I was expecting an easy and straight forward installation, the installation was anything but——The table had two threaded holes in the front which lined up with fixation holes in the fence but contrary to what it is supposed to be , when using these holes the fenc...
