Author: Nick Engler. I’ll bet a lot of seasoned LJ’s already know about this book but many others won’t so here goes. So, you’re relatively new to woodworking and you want to know which of the seven types of chisels and firmer gouges you have. In this book you can see a picture of each, and explanation of what each is and how it’s used and sure enough a picture of yours. You’ve got paring chisels, the type to be pushed with your hands not a mallet.Or, yo...

Fastcap pocket chisels

Fastcap pocket chisels

I bought three of the four sizes and have enjoyed all of them. The four sizes are 1/4”, 1/2”, 3/4” and 1” with a sharpener in the same folding style. I had to skip on the 1” because shipping needed to be included in the budget. They have been put through tough knots and soft woods mostly. The soft woods (pine, poplar and old weathered pressure treated) cut nice and clean. The edge was not dulled very much by the knots, no visible flattening or nicks (it di...

Oneida Mini Gorilla

Oneida Mini Gorilla

04-29-2009 03:16 PM by philF | 8 comments »

I was searching for a portable (one machine at a time) dust collector for my basement shop. After much research and anguish I settled on the Oneida Air Systems Mini Gorilla. Oneida cut the price to $795.00 and threw in a plastic Dust Deputy DIY cyclone. They also cut the price on the remote control upgrade to $30. I was vacillating between the Jet DC-1100 CK (Canister Filter) and the Mini Gorilla. The Jet had the higher CFM, but I wondered how long would I have 1100 CFM, was the filter g...

Harbor Freight Bar Clamps

Harbor Freight Bar Clamps

First off I agree with some here at LJ that Harbor Freight makes some real junk. I also agree with some here at LJ that Harbor Freight makes some pretty good stuff. I have been using Harbor Freight (Pittsburgh) F style bar clamps for some time now and am totally satisfied with them. For the cost they can’t be beat. When they aren’t on sale they range in price from $2.99 for a 6” clamp to $9.99 for the 36” model. On sale they are cheaper yet, I think I paid $1.99...

Grizzly H7777 8" Dado Stack

Grizzly H7777 8" Dado Stack

04-26-2009 03:28 PM by Frostyjo | 9 comments »

After the recent reviews where various customer service centers have taken a beating, here’s one that has a happy ending. Last fall I was on the quest for a new dado set to go with my new saw. As a weekend hobbyist with Christmas approaching I couldn’t rationalize spending $200+ on a stack. After looking at several I narrowed it down to the Freud 208 and the Grizzly’s H7777 8” stacks. The deciding points that leaned me towards the Grizzly were price ($50), the chippers are full plates w...

Grizzly G0593 8" Jointer with Spiral Cutter-head

Grizzly G0593 8" Jointer with Spiral Cutter-head

This review is going to be a little different. (I am in a good mood)I decided that after years of doing it by hand, that it was time to buy a good jointer. As I have stated before, I am a little obsessive when it comes to buying a high priced tool. If it is something I can lay my hands on and look at, I usually have no problem just pulling the trigger and buying it. But when it comes to ordering a tool I have never seen/touched or used, and then giving the lady/man on the other end of the pho...

Laguna Platinum Series 18/47 Lathe

Laguna Platinum Series 18/47 Lathe

I had been looking for a bigger lathe for some time. Larger Jets, Powermatics, One-Ways, Stubbys, Nova, Grizzly, etc. I had been doing pretty well with my old (hybrid) Jet JWL-1236. I had bought it from a guy used who had bought an old head and mated it to a newer bed and tail stock then crafted his own welded steel and cast iron support for it. It was obviously something thrown together but worked pretty well for me. I didn’t have the full range of speeds (6) that I was suppoed to have...

Harbor Freight 23 Ga. Air Pinner

Harbor Freight 23 Ga. Air Pinner

04-25-2009 05:41 PM by Tim Scoville | 22 comments »

I have become rather pragmatic in the purchasing of some tools for my shop. Harbor Freight is very accessible for me and the cost of air tools from the big box stores seems out of proportion to what they do and what I can buy them for at HF. I am not not a power user of air nailers but expect I will use them more and more over time. Although the normal price for this is $24.99, I think I picked mine up on sale for $16.99. The pins I buy in packages of 6000 for about $4. I love these pinners s...

Skil Worm gear saw

Skil Worm gear saw

04-25-2009 06:53 AM by Don K. | 16 comments »

I know many woodworkers do not use a “Worm gear” saw because it is not precise enough for fine detail cutting. But at times I still find I need to use one (other than in my remodel business). A few weeks ago, (before easter) I was asked to build a project for my church (A 20ft tall mountain for a Easter play) and I pulled out my trusty 20+ year old Skil worm drive saw to begin work. Guess what, didn’t work anymore. So I jumped in my truck and head down to my local Lowe’...
