Sharpening System

Sharpening System

01-24-2010 06:54 AM by David Murray | 7 comments »

This is my first review so bear with me. I needed a way to sharpen my lathe chisels, I didn’t want the expence or have to wait to send them to a sharpening service. I have always been intimidated by sharpening tools so I went to a Rockler store nearby for guidance. They showed me the setup they had for sharpening there turning tools. I gained some valuable tips that day and went about researching products for this purpose. The system I settled on is PSI’s version. I purchase...

HF 36" Aluminum Bar Clamps, moderately average

HF 36" Aluminum Bar Clamps, moderately average

I needed some larger clamps for an upcoming project, and saw these on sale, I got a bunch of the 36” clamps on sale (reg 11.99, but sale + coupon got em for $5.95 each). I think they’re Central Forge brand (like the HF one handed clamps). They have a 32” actual clamping capacity I gave em a little bit of a workout clamping up some scraps to make a few boards, they put some solid pressure on without exploding, so thats always a plus lol! My main concern is that after ...

Carter Stablizer

Carter Stablizer

Turn you band saw into a scroll saw in a matter of minutes. The Carter Stablizer works with blades 1/4 ” and smaller only! You will also have to push the lower guide bearing back as far as they will go. The stabilzer wheel has a grove set so that the blade ride into it during sawing. This allow the blade to turn with no residence. The user has a very free flowing sense of control. When making tight turn the wood will absorb any heat caused by cutting leaving the blade cool to th...

Disposable supplies

Disposable supplies

For some time, I tried to find something to use when working with small amounts of glues or finishing supplies. A sign painter friend told me of these ‘Souffle Cup’. We know these as sample cups when we go to the deli and are given a small sample. The cups come in many sizes, from about 1/2 oz to about 4oz and in untreated paper or plastic. The benifit of these cups are several; First, you always have a clean container into which you can put small amounts of various glues, ...

Cheap, but works very well

Cheap, but works very well

I bought this miter saw about 4 or 5 years ago. It was my second major tool purchase. The first was my $100 Delta table saw. Since then, I’ve used this saw for almost every project I’ve worked on. I’m a hobbyist, so it’s not like I use this everyday though. I am still using the stock blade on it, and it does cut very roughly. I have been meaning to replace that blade with something better soon. It has never broken down and when I set the angles, it doesnR...

Veritas Saddle Square by Lee Valley

Veritas Saddle Square by Lee Valley

01-21-2010 09:33 PM by Jim Crockett (USN Retired) | 10 comments »

I have always had problems wrapping a line around faces of a piece of stock – seems as though the two lines never accurately intersected at the edge. So I recently purchased a Veritas Saddle Square from Lee Valley. What a difference the proper tool makes! I can now accurately draw lines on all sides of the stock and it is accomplished quickly and easily. The Saddle Square is made of anodized aluminum, 2” wide. The two legs are 1-1/4” and 2-1/4” long and both end fa...

Nice little woodworking Calipers for the money

Nice little woodworking Calipers for the money

I picked up the Cen-Tech 6” Digital Fractional Caliper over the holidays for $25 at Harbor Freight. It seemed like a pretty decent price compared to what I had seen for similar models at other stores. Overall I like it a lot. I have used regular calipers before but this is my first set of digital calipers and I have to say I am never going back. I bought this model because it does fractions but I don’t really use the fractions setting because I tend to think in thousandths of ...

"Unlocking the Secrets of Traditional Design"

"Unlocking the Secrets of Traditional Design"

When it comes to woodworking, I often feel like I am working my way backwards. I was proficient with a tablesaw before I picked up my first handsaw. I knew my way around a drum sander before learning how to use a smoothing plane. And perhaps most disturbingly, I was creating and building my own furniture before I knew anything about design. Heck, who am I kidding? I still know nothing about design! I know what I think looks good and I follow a few basic rules, but more often than not I ...

An awesome saw

An awesome saw

01-21-2010 11:18 AM by funchuck | 10 comments »

I don’t like to give 5 stars, but I think this really deserves it. I bought this saw a little over 3 years ago. This is the first “good” tool I bought. It is responsible for starting my spiral into buying higher end tools. Before this tool, I bought mostly B&D and $100 stationary/bench tools. This cordless saw is so handy. I use it all the time. It cuts very straight and the case includes a place to store your extra blades. I’ve used it to cut sheet goods...

Final Bandsaw

Final Bandsaw

01-21-2010 05:38 AM by PhineasWhipsnake | 11 comments »

I’m retiring in 3 months, so I decided to upgrade to this saw from a Delta 10” I bought 10 years ago. I originally wanted the 17” Grizzly, but decided to buy from a local brick & mortar store (Sacrramento Machinery)for political reasons. This saw has pretty much all the features I wanted: 12” resaw capacity, roller guides, quick-disconnect detensioning, and, most importantly, local support in case of a problem. Like everyone else, I replaced the blade with a...
