Porter-Cable PCB575BG Bench Grinder: a good value

Porter-Cable PCB575BG Bench Grinder: a good value

01-05-2011 02:56 AM by Mark Colan | 13 comments »

I have been using a washing machine motor with a grinding wheel attached to its one axle – without any kind of guards or grinding stands. Power wires attached by screw terminals that are exposed. The whole thing mounted to a board. It worked well enough, but I decided that as safety features go, this one was a dinosaur. I decided to find a bench grinder that I won’t have to replace later. Variable speed, 8” wheels, 3/4 HP or better were key features. My usual shopp...

Angle reader/finder

Angle reader/finder

01-03-2011 11:14 PM by Dan | 21 comments »

I recently learned how to sharpen my own chisels and plane irons. I was having a hard time when it came to all the different bevels. I bought a cheaper honing jig that works well but it does not measure the angle I am honing. I tried using a protractor and had some success but I still felt I was off. I was looking at Rockler tools online and saw this item was on sale. It had good reviews and the price seemed good so I ordered it. The item arrived ready to use. There were no complicated ...

For those of you that read my safety in the shop post, Thank-you for all the kind thoughts and words! http://lumberjocks.com/topics/23154 I will be replacing my fire Extinguisher today, glad I have them. First let me say, I have Love my Triton router that I bought in March. I was so bummed all weekend when it caught on fire Fri. It took me a while to find a service center on line, as there is only one Authorized Service Center for Triton in the country, in Fair Haven Mich. Of course wit...

Another winner for Harbor Freight

Another winner for Harbor Freight

These anti-fatigue floor mats are very inexpensive, especially when on sale 50% off. They are very easy to install , they fit very well, easy to clean and they look good. Of course I bought them for my comfort but more important I also bought them to save my tools. A Stanley plane or a chisel dropped on the concrete are dead meat, with the mats they have a fair chance to survive.Highly recommended.

SD508 Freud 8" Dado Set

SD508 Freud 8" Dado Set

01-03-2011 01:14 AM by Ken90712 | 9 comments »

I was making some candleholders and my Dado Blades were junk and chipping wood on every cut. Then my local Rockler Store sent me a coupon with 40% off any single item excluding Power Tools. Sweet!, I tell Blondie I’m off to Rockler to save some money… LOL…. The set is $199.00 so that’s 80 bucks off. She brainwashed my sometime ago to always look for sales. Another story sometime, LOL…. Man, I thought my Forrest Woodworker 2 Blade was something. This set is more than impressive! Th...

Undersized Router bits for Plywood.

Undersized Router bits for Plywood.

01-03-2011 12:53 AM by Ken90712 | 9 comments »

I bought these only because they were 1/2 off during Xmas at Woodcraft. I usually just messed with my dado set, or walked it on the router table. These bits match the plywood that is undersized that we all buy from stores. It makes the joints perfectly and very tight! This makes it very quick to cut in perfect fitting dados on the router table quickly without messing with you table saw. The bits are for ¼, ½, & ¾ inch plywood.Very nice set to have on hand and would recommend them to you.

The only reason this did not get a 5 Star, is the Directions & the casters! I have to get new ones as they’re junk! Why they would not include better casters, I have no idea. For the money and CFM rating along with the 1 Micron Bag being standard, I felt this was the best bang for your buck. At $259.00 plus shipping I thought it would be better than trying to make a Harbor Freight one work. Not there is anything wrong with a HF one for those of my Fellow LJ’s that have them. I have be...

A Handy Addition To A Single Stage Dust Collection System

A Handy Addition To A Single Stage Dust Collection System

01-02-2011 11:00 PM by Dustmite97 | 7 comments »

I have been using a single stage dust collection system for over a year now and have found that the bottom bag fills up quickly and the top filter bag gets really messy. I finally upgraded to a two stage system and it works great. The lid I use has two ports and the port that connects to the tool has an L-shaped elbow that connects to the underside of the port. I have the lid on a heavy duty Rubbermaid garbage can but might upgrade to a deeper can sometime. After doing a bunch of planing and ...

A Great And Simple Little Machine

A Great And Simple Little Machine

I have had this sander for almost a year now and it has been great. I always needed a disc sander but always had trouble trying to pick one. There are many similar ones to the sander that I have and there are also combination units with a disc and a belt. I decided I really only needed the disc since I only sand wooden toy parts, bandsaw boxes, and for shaping plus I have limited shop space. I decided to choose this sander. The 12 inch disc makes for lots of sanding surface which is a big adv...

Nice scraper but difficult sweet spot

Nice scraper but difficult sweet spot

01-02-2011 06:17 PM by Chelios | 16 comments »

I got this scraper plane to see if I could get better results during surface prep for finishing. It cost $235 from the Lie Nielsen web page. The finish on the plane is flawless. It is a beauty and coming out of the box it created a lot of anticipation on what it was going to do for me. It has a very nice heft to it and a great blade. I honed the blade sharp like I do for all my planes and I started working with it. Right away I realized that this scraper was not going to be easy to ma...
