The Blue Elephant In The Room

When I decided to upgrade to a 12 Inch Jointer at the end of 2010 I researched many brands and models. Usual suspects like Powermatic, Delta, Grizzly, General, Shop Fox and even some of the Euro models at the urging of a respected colleague. The Euros were way out of my price range (I refuse to take out a loan to buy a machine as my colleague suggested). While researching the remaining brands I found this video of an Oliver on youtube www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKMxIY0iGlw . The Oliver Machi...

Makita BHP454

Makita BHP454

This has to be the best hammer/drill/driver that i’ve ever used. It’s power/weight combo is perfect. I could use this drill all day without being fatigued and the battery would keep on going. Drilling 1 1/4” holes with speedbore max bits does not pose a problem for this drill. It eats through lumber with ease. This drill easily drills in 3/16” holes in concrete (just as fast as our corded hammer drill) to drive in anchors and it doesn’t take much to drill u...

Dewalt DCD760KL

Dewalt DCD760KL

Our crews use a lot of different makes of cordless drills and when they need one from the shop they used to grab one of the Makitas but now their first choice is the DeWalt DCD970 drill. The DeWalt deliver a lot more power over a longer period of time. Part of this is their having the biggest (and heaviest) lithium ion battery and part of it is the 3 speed gearbox. We use the Hole Pro adjustable hole cutters a lot and the low speed setting is perfect for good cutting speed and having enoug...

Senco pc1010 air compressor

Senco pc1010 air compressor

02-25-2011 09:17 AM by phtools | 10 comments »

OK, a little play on words there, but the truth is that this small compressor is great.Know what you are buying, and then rate it from that point of view. I’ve seen people here say that this Senco is too small, lacks enough reserve air so it doesn’t keep starting to recycle, and all sorts of other comments which show they have no idea of what they are talking about. You don’t buy a Prius, or a Smart Car, to use as a tow truck, and you don’t buy a small compressor like ...

Affordable Drum sanding Finally

Affordable Drum sanding Finally

02-25-2011 06:28 AM by sawblade1 | 21 comments »

Today I received this little guy in my shop :) Drum sanders are expensive especially conveyor fed ones however Grizzly’s new 10” drum sander fits the bill at 345.00 and put it into the range of most average woodworkers. To have one is a luxury but a well deserved one. The sander left the boards smooth and scratch and track mark free. I set mine up with 180 grit paper instead of the 80 grit it came with. I only give it five stars with a few exceptions. On the sander I received ...

Diamond sharpening Kit

Diamond sharpening Kit

This kit came with 4 “stones” – actually 4 steel plates. The extra course is a little smoother than road surface. When I used this to flatten my 8000 grit water stone, I found that my flattening stone has been worn to a point that is no longer flat. When you get these, sharpen a piece of steel or something hard where you are not looking for that pristine mirror finish. I made a blade for a radius plane – thank Mads for this, the blade is now done – and went...

Plumb It exendable level

Plumb It exendable level

02-23-2011 12:02 PM by devann | 2 comments »

This is a review about a level I’ve been using for the last 15 years or so. The manufacture, called PlumbIt makes several models of aluminum levels that are capable of extending from about four feet to nearly twenty two feet in lentgh. The model I have, closed measures 63” and will extend to 13’ 10”. These are some pretty unique levels because the length of the level can be set anywhere within their operating range with just a sqeeze of the handle. This makes this a l...

Hitachi M12V Falls Short

Hitachi M12V Falls Short

I was excited to add this router to my collection because of its 15 amp power rating. However, several factors led me to use other machines. Ergonomics: The machine is heavy and clunky, with no particular thought to ergonomics. A router is one tool in particular that needs to feel good in your hands. The plunge action is fair. The plastic handles are hollow, and feel like they may break off at any moment. They actually creak as you pick this tool up. The height adjustment knob is a ch...
