Final Bandsaw

I’m retiring in 3 months, so I decided to upgrade to this saw from a Delta 10” I bought 10 years ago. I originally wanted the 17” Grizzly, but decided to buy from a local brick & mortar store (Sacrramento Machinery)for political reasons. This saw has pretty much all the features I wanted: 12” resaw capacity, roller guides, quick-disconnect detensioning, and, most importantly, local support in case of a problem. Like everyone else, I replaced the blade with a...

Incra Measuring/Marking tool does it in Decimal and Metric!

Incra Measuring/Marking tool does it in Decimal and Metric!

A while ago I posted a review on a decimal measuring tape and some of you liked decimals. If you haven’t already HERE is it. Well for those of you that do, I have another product that uses them. It’s the Incra Professional T-Rule. As you can see from he first picture it has the same features as the regular Incra rules except this one has markings for decimal and metric! Now this feature is only included on the “Professional” model. Also it still retains the stand...

Central Machinery 10" Industrial Cabinet Saw

Central Machinery 10" Industrial Cabinet Saw

I know your probably thinking…”HF, if it’s anything like some of the other things they sell, it’s not worth it” But read on…I was very reluctant to buy this saw, and debated about it for several months. Then HF had a 25% discount coupon the day after Christmas, only to be used on New Years Day. I figured the math and this TS was going to cost $562.50, original price $750.00. So I bit the bullet and ordered it.The specs-3 HP motor, 230V, single phase; Max. s...

A great price on an acceptable clamp

A great price on an acceptable clamp

I was at the local Harbor Freight over the holidays and I noticed a bin full of 18” Ratcheting Bar clamps on sale for $2.99 each. The seemed to work well in the store and all were covered with a little bit of oil, presumably to protect the metallic parts. I didn’t really have a need for new clamps and I wasn’t sure if an 18” clamp would be useful or not but I figured I really couldn’t go wrong for only $2.99 (regularly $7.99 I think) so I bought 6 of them. T...

Not sure what to think of these, but felt misled by Lee Valley

Not sure what to think of these, but felt misled by Lee Valley

I have mostly seen high praise of Lee Valley, but I bought these 2 items and felt that their website was misleading. The 2 pictures above are from their website. They are: 1. Pocket Folding Squares – they have a 45 deg, 90 deg and 135 deg setting. They are supposed to be accurate to within 0.06 deg. I bought the 6” version. 2. Engineer’s Squares – they are machined to 0.001” deviation per inch. I bought the 2” and 4” versions. If you l...

Not bad, until you use something better

Not bad, until you use something better

This was my first major tool purchase about 5 or 6 years ago. It was a whopping $100 from Lowes. At the time, I thought that was a lot of money! This saw has some limitations: The miter gauge slot is not standard, so you can’t upgrade to a better one. The table is very small The insert is just a thin piece of metal, which will make it hard to create an insert. I found the fence to be surprisingly good. When I lock it down, it doesn’t slip, and it locks down at ...

Pretty Good Drill Press

Pretty Good Drill Press

01-20-2010 02:49 AM by funchuck | 5 comments »

Bought this from Lowes a few years ago. I don’t remember the exact price, but it was less than $100. This is a benchtop model and it has a laser sight that works very well. This is a feature that I like a lot. To change the speed, I need to open the top and change the belt to one of the other pulleys. A nice touch is that there is a drawer on the base that can be used to hold the chuck, as well as other tools for servicing the machine. One limitation of this drill press is...

Good for a Black & Decker

Good for a Black & Decker

01-19-2010 10:39 PM by funchuck | 9 comments »

This was my first real drill. I know Black & Decker gets a lot of knocks here, but it really wasn’t too bad a drill. I’ve had this drill for probably 5 years. I’ve done a lot of home improvements with it. This includes: Installation of a new garage door opener Putting up a patio lattice made of all pressure treated lumber (6×8s, 4×8x, 4×4s, 2×6s) Various wood working projects (mostly shelves and storage). I have used it to drill 3...

How could they even sell this?

How could they even sell this?

I was very excited to order this. A 10” Jointer/Planer for only $420? That’s a great deal! And it’s a JET! Well, when it arrived, it looked like the box had been through hell. The top and bottom flaps were opened, the stand was missing, and all the nuts, bolts and washers were scattered all over the place. I was ok with the missing stand, since I had an extra stand from an old Delta table saw I can use. I just had to make sure none of the other parts were missing....

Rolling Trades PCW

“This is awesome,” said host John Palanca, on an episode of DIY Network’s “Under Construction.” “It’s a great concept, great idea that is well thought out by a carpenter. Half the job on a jobsite is setting up and this is already set up for you.”
