I got this laser drill attachment with my drill press that I reviewed here. I’m really happy with the drill press but this laser sight is quite useless. Contrary to its name, it does not actually drill holes with a laser. Now that would be cool. This mounts on the column of the drill press and projects two laser lines which are supposed to cross at the exact point where the bit will touch the material to be drilled. It is, in fact, possible to set up the laser to do this. The adju...

Fine press for careful work

Fine press for careful work

I paid three hundred bucks for this 15-inch device a couple of years back. I had initially picked out a Delta 16.5 incher, but when it came time to make the purchase Lowe’s had sold out of the Delta and doing a special order jacked the price up too much. The Ridgid is a fine tool, although it is still basically a standard-quality item in this class. It has 12 speeds, running from 300 on up to 3100 rpm, although to make speed changes you have to open the top, release the tension with a leve...

Does what it's supposed to do at a good cost

Does what it's supposed to do at a good cost

Pros-strongest drill press I’ve ever had. Strong enough for what I do-lots of speed settings-plenty of chuck travel-haven’t measured run-out but I couldn’t noticeably see any with the largest forstner bit I have. Cons-not sure if it’s considered a con but it’s super tall for a benchtop model. -overly soaked in shipping grease but mineral spirits will take care of that-circle table. Why do all drill presses come with a circle table??!! Not a huge deal as I made...

A nice, solid, big woodworking press with a LONG stroke.

A nice, solid, big woodworking press with a LONG stroke.

I just moved my shop and got some more floor space, so I went shopping for a bigger drill press. I had basically two criteria: it had to be strong enough to handle timbers, and it had to have a long enough quill-stroke to get to the middle of those timbers. I do some timber framing and some very heavy furniture work, so the usual 14” press wouldn’t really work for me. I discovered that most presses, even 17” presses, have very short stroke, usually 3-4”. This means...

Model ending in 01 has factory problems

Model ending in 01 has factory problems

Unfortunately this very nice bench top drill press with twin laser guides has a few glitches. The table platform will not tighten no matter how tight you turn the crank. number two the belt adjustment does not move. So what looked promising and great value for a wood shop was returned to factory for replacement for the upgraded 02 model. I must say that Bosch who owns Skill acknowledged the problem and are sending me the return stiicker, no hassle. Getting back to the press, for normal DIY woo...

First impressions

First impressions

I just picked the drill press up from Lowes today. They honored a 25% Harbor Freight coupon which brought the price down to about $260 out the door. My daughter and I got it set up in about 30 minutes and so far am very impressed. I haven’t measured the runout yet. I do wish that they would make it easier to tilt the table. This is not an issue with this drill press specifically, it was the same on the bench top Ryobi that I just sold. I will update this review as I get more time ...

Peachtree Drill Press Dust Collector

Peachtree Drill Press Dust Collector

Does what it is supposed to do …you can adjust the hose to any position you like and it stays right where you put it. The box includes everything you need to install on a standard drill press … unless you have an 8”, 10”, and some models of 12” benchtop drill presses. I assume this attachment is intended for use on floor models, but you can using it on benchtop models is a buit of a challenge. I considered returning it, but this was a deeply discounted deal...

A Great Product

A Great Product

I acquired a good old (early 70’s) 14” cast iron (read “heavy”) drill press this spring. It was hardly used, but required elbow grease from a long period in a basement. I haven’t used it much as I don’t like working with wood on a cast iron table.Yesterday I went to Woodcraft and picked the the Pinnacle auxiliary drill press table for $99.00.The key to giving it 5 stars is the care you need to take when installing it so you can reap the benefits of their...

Colt Maxi-Cut Forstner vs. Porter-Cable bit

Colt Maxi-Cut Forstner vs. Porter-Cable bit

12-20-2011 04:34 AM by rweitz | 6 comments »

The drill bits you see are 2” Porter Cable, and a 1 7/8” Colt Maxi Cut. I used the Porter cable last year and it worked OK, but the Colt was amazing. This might be an over the top review, but if you want to buy a great Forstner bit they can’t be beat. Cuts like butter through even some tough old oak branches with knots and all. The Porter cable did the job but took at least 10 times longer for the same result.

Initial impression is that this Drill Press Table is okay

Initial impression is that this Drill Press Table is okay

I added this Grizzly H7827 Drill Press Table to my Ridgid DP1550 drill press. I’ve read other reviews that it’s not the best drill press out ther but since I couldn’t figure out what I wanted in a table I decided to spend the $45 or so to try this one and use it for a while to figure out what I want in a drill press table. Plus, the hardware that comes with this table would have cost a bit if I’d bought it separately. I figured if nothing else I’d at least have s...
