Rikon Drill Press and Orion Mortising Attachment

Rikon Drill Press and Orion Mortising Attachment

I went to the March Madness sale at Woodcraft today and came home with a new benchtop drill press and I grabbed up an Orion mortising attachment while I was there. I caught the eary bird part of the sale so I got an additional 5% off. The drill press retails at Woodcraft for $249.99. For the eary bird deal they take the additional 5% off after they apply the 10% discount so it ended up costing me about $214 before sales tax. It’s a 13” drill press with a 1/2 hp motor. Prett...

Now HERE'S a drill press for woodworking

Now HERE'S a drill press for woodworking

Here’s my review of the Shopsmith Mark V in drill press “mode”. I am convinced it is one of the only truly designed-for-woodworking drill presses on the market. Go take a look at drill presses on the market today… they’re all equipped with a beautiful dinner plate sized table. -Which isn’t worth beans for woodworking… want proof? How many guys have built their own “aftermarket” table to fix the problem? How many places offer pre-built drill press tabl...

The Steel City Drill Press had what I was looking for.

The Steel City Drill Press had what I was looking for.

636 days ago by Dan Pleska | 11 comments »

I was looking for a drill press with a long quill travel and found it in the Steel City 17” drill press. At 6” it has the longest quill travel that I could find in its price range. It was a little more expensive than the comparable models, but I got it at a show and with the $75 dollar rebate at the time it brought it to within dollars of the competition. With all other specifications being similar, the quill travel was what sold me. It probably isn’t any secret why it...

Fine press for careful work

Fine press for careful work

362 days ago by ferstler | 9 comments »

I paid three hundred bucks for this 15-inch device a couple of years back. I had initially picked out a Delta 16.5 incher, but when it came time to make the purchase Lowe’s had sold out of the Delta and doing a special order jacked the price up too much. The Ridgid is a fine tool, although it is still basically a standard-quality item in this class. It has 12 speeds, running from 300 on up to 3100 rpm, although to make speed changes you have to open the top, release the tension with a leve...

Love this Drill Press but get help with assembly

Love this Drill Press but get help with assembly

563 days ago by 3fingerpat | 13 comments »

This Drill Press was a present to myself for a lot reasons; one of which was putting up with an old 8” Delta Benchtop Drill Press that just wasn’t getting the job done anymore. If you are not used to working with assembling parts and equipment, than ask someone for help. The owner’s manual’s procedures left out two items which I have copied from an email I sent the manufacturer:“Your Assembly Instructions left out one key item. It failed to address the fact tha...

Harbor Freight 13" DP (Model 38142)

Harbor Freight 13" DP (Model 38142)

This 13” DP is a far cry from my most prestigious tool, and Harbor Freight’s “Central Machinery” brand doesn’t typically conjure up tons of confidence and the obligatory “Tim the tool man Taylor” grunts that the big names will, but this particular purchase has been too good to not give it the credit it’s due. The 38142 is a 13”, 16 speed, 3/4 hp benchtop drill press. It weighs in at a respectable 125#, and stands over 40” tall. It...

A fine little press for hobby-scale work

A fine little press for hobby-scale work

366 days ago by ferstler | 5 comments »

I own a Ridgid 15-inch drill press that is terrific for larger-scale projects. (I’d write a review here, but somebody else has already done that with decent skill, although I did post some comments on that review entry.) However, the Ridgid is overkill for some smaller operations, and so I also have the illustrated 10-inch Ryobi mounted on a bench for lightweight stuff. When I purchased it several years back it cost $99 bucks, which is a credit to Chinese production economies. Unfortuna...

Delta did it right for this drill press

Delta did it right for this drill press

673 days ago by GaryK | 5 comments »

This heavy-duty 16-1/2-inch drill press from Delta will do the job. The 3/4-horsepower motor that can be wired for either 115 or 230 volts. It gives you an deep plunge length of 4-7/8 inches. Chuck holds up to a 5/8-inch-diameter bit. Solid cast-iron construction and a 3-1/8-inch column The table rotates, 45 degrees each way for drilling angles. On of my favorite features is the depth stop. Instead of screwing it up and down the shaft it hasa quick release button to dis-engage ...

new General drill press

new General drill press

238 days ago by bern92 | 11 comments »

this was my christmas gift(from me to me). I was looking to buy a drill press for a long time. It’s a nice tool, cast iron head and base and it’s heavy so it’s stable. The motor is 3/4HP and has enough power for me. It is made by General so like all the tools they do it is perfect…..
