Delta did it right for this drill press

Delta did it right for this drill press

This heavy-duty 16-1/2-inch drill press from Delta will do the job. The 3/4-horsepower motor that can be wired for either 115 or 230 volts. It gives you an deep plunge length of 4-7/8 inches. Chuck holds up to a 5/8-inch-diameter bit. Solid cast-iron construction and a 3-1/8-inch column The table rotates, 45 degrees each way for drilling angles. On of my favorite features is the depth stop. Instead of screwing it up and down the shaft it hasa quick release button to dis-engage ...

The Steel City Drill Press had what I was looking for.

The Steel City Drill Press had what I was looking for.

I was looking for a drill press with a long quill travel and found it in the Steel City 17” drill press. At 6” it has the longest quill travel that I could find in its price range. It was a little more expensive than the comparable models, but I got it at a show and with the $75 dollar rebate at the time it brought it to within dollars of the competition. With all other specifications being similar, the quill travel was what sold me. It probably isn’t any secret why it...

Now HERE'S a drill press for woodworking

Now HERE'S a drill press for woodworking

Here’s my review of the Shopsmith Mark V in drill press “mode”. I am convinced it is one of the only truly designed-for-woodworking drill presses on the market. Go take a look at drill presses on the market today… they’re all equipped with a beautiful dinner plate sized table. -Which isn’t worth beans for woodworking… want proof? How many guys have built their own “aftermarket” table to fix the problem? How many places offer pre-built drill press tabl...

The Beast!

The Beast!

I purchased the PM 2800 two weeks ago and this thing is a BEAST. I originally intended on purchasing the Delta 20-950 but Delta has completely discontinued the line with no intentions of reviving it – I contacted Delta directly before I pulled the trigger on the Powermatic. I would have like the extra 2 inches the Delta offered and the extra 1-5/8” on quill travel but I think I’m going to be extremely happy with the PM. Pros:1 hp motor – perfect size for my shop True variable ...

Does what it's supposed to do at a good cost

Does what it's supposed to do at a good cost

Pros-strongest drill press I’ve ever had. Strong enough for what I do-lots of speed settings-plenty of chuck travel-haven’t measured run-out but I couldn’t noticeably see any with the largest forstner bit I have. Cons-not sure if it’s considered a con but it’s super tall for a benchtop model. -overly soaked in shipping grease but mineral spirits will take care of that-circle table. Why do all drill presses come with a circle table??!! Not a huge deal as I made...

A Great Product

A Great Product

I acquired a good old (early 70’s) 14” cast iron (read “heavy”) drill press this spring. It was hardly used, but required elbow grease from a long period in a basement. I haven’t used it much as I don’t like working with wood on a cast iron table.Yesterday I went to Woodcraft and picked the the Pinnacle auxiliary drill press table for $99.00.The key to giving it 5 stars is the care you need to take when installing it so you can reap the benefits of their...

Peachtree Drill Press Dust Collector

Peachtree Drill Press Dust Collector

Does what it is supposed to do …you can adjust the hose to any position you like and it stays right where you put it. The box includes everything you need to install on a standard drill press … unless you have an 8”, 10”, and some models of 12” benchtop drill presses. I assume this attachment is intended for use on floor models, but you can using it on benchtop models is a buit of a challenge. I considered returning it, but this was a deeply discounted deal...

First impressions

First impressions

25 days ago by Nates02gt | 7 comments »

I just picked the drill press up from Lowes today. They honored a 25% Harbor Freight coupon which brought the price down to about $260 out the door. My daughter and I got it set up in about 30 minutes and so far am very impressed. I haven’t measured the runout yet. I do wish that they would make it easier to tilt the table. This is not an issue with this drill press specifically, it was the same on the bench top Ryobi that I just sold. I will update this review as I get more time ...

Glad I picked this Drill Press

Glad I picked this Drill Press

Anyone thinking of buying this drill press, should really do it if you have the cash. I have already benefited from the 6” quill while making my workbench. The angles are good, although I have only needed side to side angles, compound has not come up for me. While it really should come with a fence, I had a router fence that I used and Rockler hold downs that fit perfectly in the slots provided in the table, same slots work great for the fence. When I need to take off the hold-dow...

The last drill press I plan on owning

The last drill press I plan on owning

926 days ago by Hoakie | 20 comments »

This is the second drill press I’ve owned, but the first serious one. As you can see in one of the pictures, I had the 10” Craftsman drill press. It had a 2 1/8” quill travel and a 2/3 hp motor. Although it got small jobs done, it was never fun to use and I cursed it out every time I needed to. Obviously the Delta 18-900L is in a whole different class so any real comparison is moot. However, I can say that I don’t seem myself ever cursing this bad boy out. I pur...
