Great addition to any woodshop

Great addition to any woodshop

I have several mechanics vices around my shop in various sizes but have always relied on clamps for woodworking projects. Tireing of this practice, I decided to look at woodworkers vices. I don’t use a true woodworker’s type workbench and rely on my table saw outfeed table as a general work area, so I wanted to mount the wood vice in the end of that table. After some internet research I decided on the Wilton 79A Pivot Jaw vice and ordered one on-line from Tyler Tool. The vice was shippe...

great for ad-hoc jigs

great for ad-hoc jigs

02-18-2012 09:30 PM by John | 7 comments »

pics show just one example of using this product. I made this ad-hoc tapering jig for a project today in about 4 minutes, the rockler hold downs are great! as you can see i used one rockler and one cheap chinese knockoff hold down – big difference! the cheapo flexes and has a plastic insert that’s always getting sideways i will break this jig down now that i’m done cutting tapers for today (see pic below) and put the track and hold downs back into the clear plastic tube t...

Nice accessory

Nice accessory

Not a whole lot to say about a tool like this. I was looking for a device to hold stuff down on my work bench top. Amazon was selling this one for $10 shipped. I was a bit weary of ordering it since the stock photos made the screw threads look a bit too fine for my taste. However, as the included pic shows, the threads are actually fairly coarse. Nice. Installation is very straight forward. I’m pretty sure the manufacturer intends a 3/8 bolt to be used to attach the clamp to the benc...

Jet Speed Clamps with Slip Clutch and 4" Throat

Jet Speed Clamps with Slip Clutch and 4" Throat

09-12-2011 08:34 PM by pintodeluxe | 1 comment »

These clamps were needed to reach over my pipe clamps during complicated glueups. The long 4” throat can accomplish this easily. The handle is large enough in diameter for good clamping pressure, and they easily closed all of my mortise and tenon joints with no gap. Cons: The clamp pads fall off easily. This is easily solved with a dab of silicone caulking. The slip clutch occasionally slips when you don’t want it to. I usually prefer clamps with a trigger for ju...

Unhappy with customer service

Unhappy with customer service

Update I got my part in the mail today. It was post marked August 24th. So it was sent a week after I told them the first one never showed up. It was also shipped from NY state to my house in PA. Still not thrilled but I got my part and I upgraded the rating to 3-stars. I know people want product reviews, but I feel that this customer service issue is valid. The clamp seems to work OK although the rotating handle is too short and manually pulling the strap out isn’t as easy as i...

Shopsmith clamps

Shopsmith clamps

I was using these clamps today and thought to myself that I have never seen a review of these clamps on LJ. These are my favorite clamps for gluing up panels (like table tops or chair bottoms). What you see in this picture will be a chair bottom by the end of the day. When you tighten these clamps you are applying pressure to the edges and the sides. This does a great job of keeping the boards aligned. I particularly like these clamps when I am making something that is too big to ...

A great clamp for the price

A great clamp for the price

05-19-2011 06:26 PM by Chuck | 3 comments »

I purchased a set of these bar clamps several years ago. They were inexpensive and have worked very well. I was first introduced to them when taking a class at the CT Valley School of Woodworking. They were all still functional in the school, and I’m sure they get plenty of abuse in the school. They currently list for approximately $25/each for a 48” clamp and offer them in many lengths. The bar clamps are made from extruded aluminum, are reasonably light and give a good am...

Harbor Freight 3/4" Pipe Clamp with Base

Harbor Freight 3/4" Pipe Clamp with Base

about a week ago i needed to pick up some bar clamps to handle a larger project that I was fixing up. I started off at Ace hardware because i knew i needed the pipe and thought i would check the prices of the clamps…and wow they were $17 big ones, and for 2 of them that means $34 + $22 for the pipes…no thanks. So i pulled out the good old phone and looked on HF to see their price…$9.99 on sale plus these have a base which is a bonus if you ask me. I have used them for a few ...

Preferred over the Bessey DuoKlamp

Preferred over the Bessey DuoKlamp

04-01-2011 10:34 PM by Jack_Isidore | 6 comments »

I needed to pick up 4 clamps for a glue up, and it was between the Bessey DuoKlamp and the Irwin Quick-Grip. I haven’t seen any reviews or posts about the newish Irwin XP-600 line, so I thought I’d post my thoughts. Bessey Duo-Klamps:I recently started using Bessey K-Body parallel clamps and I’ve been impressed, so I bought 4 24” DuoKlamps. One of the features offered with them is the ability to switch from clamping to spreading with the switch of a dial. This seems...

Everyone should have about 17 of these in their shop

Everyone should have about 17 of these in their shop

03-15-2011 08:07 AM by Tedstor | 15 comments »

OK, a spring clamp is hardly a tool that dreams are made of. But a few days ago it occured to me that I’ve had a pair of these exact clamps in my shop for a few years now. I’ve probably used them 483 times since then. Very strong, very good quality. A couple days later I found myself in the HD for an extension cord, and decided to pick up a few more spring clamps while I was there. I could not remember how much I paid for the original pair, so I was pleasantly surprised to find th...
