Move over Bessey Revos?

Move over Bessey Revos?

02-16-2013 08:55 PM by Marcus | 20 comments »

I recently did a quick write up of a couple of Bessey Revo clamps that I had just purchased. I was very pleased and still am with them. In the comments, the Jorgenson Cabinet Master’s seemed pretty popular, so in the back of my mind, I thought I would try them out some day. I rarely go to Woodcraft due to it’s proximity, but I needed a piece of padauk ASAP and my normal lumberyard is closed and the Rockler down the road was sold out. I gave Woodcraft a call and they had some...

Ingenious Concept in construction

Ingenious Concept in construction

When I made the move to replace my junk bench with an actual woodworking bench, one of the first things I wanted, accessory wise, was a pair of holdfasts. For the uninitiated, holdfasts are an ancient method for holding a work piece to a bench. The construction is simple, a metal bar with a hook on it that uses compression to hold a work piece to the bench. You tap the bar in a dog hole, the bar will flex in the dog hole like a compression spring and the piece is secure. The picture tells the...

My quick grip clamps are now gathering dust

My quick grip clamps are now gathering dust

Well, maybe my quick grip clamps are not gathering dust, but they are definitely not getting used near as much after purchase a few of these. I bought 3 of the 40” versions to supplement other clamps on a very large glue. They quickly became my go to clamps. Unlike my other bessey parallel clamps, these have a nice large rubber handle that make it easy to really twist and lock down on a piece. I’ve yet to have any issues with flexing with them either, but most of the work I ...

Buyer Beware!

Buyer Beware!

A store called “Big Lots!” moved into town this winter, and since I’d heard about clamp deals there I went to find out. They do have “deals”, F-type clamps for $6, parallel clamps for $10. I’ve purchased three types of clamps, the first put to the test were these 24” F-style bar clamps. At the store I was carefull to check that they all worked properly, then bought 10 for $60. When using them I found two problems, and one is a show stopper. Fir...

Bessey Clamps Get The Job Done

Bessey Clamps Get The Job Done

Pros:Great handle is easy to grip.Easy to release.Bar has decent rigidity.Large clamp pad surface area. Cons:Difficult to engage clamping pressure – clamps often won’t “bite” then you are forced to reset the threads and try again. This usually occurs during a glueup, when time is of the essence.Nothing holds the moveable clamp head in position when not in use. Occasionally that part will slide down the bar and slam into the fixed head. Most clamps have triggers t...

Kreg's new AutoMaxx 6" Bench Klamps

Kreg's new AutoMaxx 6" Bench Klamps

If you are already a proud owner of an assembly table with some type of extruded aluminium track solution, then keep reading. I recently decided to build an assembly table and was looking for some new clamps to accompany my table. I found a product presentation on YouTube and decided to give them a try. First, they are very powerful. The first thing I had to do once I had them installed on the table using a dual purpose track (1 3/4” x 1/2”) was to turn down the clamping for...

Great Clamps Period, the price is just a bonus

Great Clamps Period, the price is just a bonus

This is a bar clamp from Harbor Freight. I only bought two because I wasn’t sure how good it would be and some stuff from there is junk. These beauties only cost me $3.99 each but when I got them home and used them I could not believe the value in this purchase. The screw has a very nice rubberized grip which i like alot better than a simple wood handle. The rubber pads are nice and study and actually stay on, I tightened these puppies down and they did not slip at all. I bet if...

Best double-sided tape I've used

Best double-sided tape I've used

06-20-2013 07:50 PM by Beezle | 6 comments »

I have tried many different methods of holding down work while routing or otherwise machining wood. Most work well enough, but I also happen to use a CNC milling machine to cut wood and in that case the material needs to be very stable and the thickness added by the tape must be consistent. Not to mention not damage anything upon removal. It’s a lot to ask and there seems to be a lot of different tapes out there. I recently noticed that Micro Fence sells a tape and I thought I wou...

Meets most of my intended purpose as a makeshift tail-vise, but hard to use effectively

When I set out to build my workbench, I knew its home would be in the basement right next to my wife’s fabric cutting table. The location made it hard to fit a tail vise without blocking the main walkway through the basement. Given that I was already pushing my wife’s forgiveness by setting my workbench in the basement, I knew I needed another option. I considered a variety of solutions, including the Veritas in-line vise, a Rocker Auto-Lock T-Track clamp (inspired by Dema's ...
