A clamp like no other.

It is a very old saw that one cannot have too many regular clamps. At work for instance I run about 40 of the Jorgensen 3700 series and still wish I had more at times. Yet it is the specialty clamps that we have that sometimes get you out of a jamb or simply make life a whole lot easier. To that end I have spring clamps, band clamps, little tiny C-clamps and a host of others that step up only when that seems the way to work. I’m sure you all have them too. One of my specialty tool...

Great addition to any woodshop

Great addition to any woodshop

I have several mechanics vices around my shop in various sizes but have always relied on clamps for woodworking projects. Tireing of this practice, I decided to look at woodworkers vices. I don’t use a true woodworker’s type workbench and rely on my table saw outfeed table as a general work area, so I wanted to mount the wood vice in the end of that table. After some internet research I decided on the Wilton 79A Pivot Jaw vice and ordered one on-line from Tyler Tool. The vice was shippe...

The Harbor Freight way of jump starting your clamp collection

The Harbor Freight way of jump starting your clamp collection

When I first began dabbling in woodworking, I had zero clamps and high aspirations. Stocking up on the well F-style Harbor Freight clamps seemed like a good idea. For months, I impulsively made trips to HF and picked up one HF F-style bar clamp (using a 20% off coupon) and 1 freebie per trip. Fast forward 2 years, and I now have 10×6”, 6×12”, 2×18” and 2×24”. Overall impression is that the HF F-style clamp was the most inexpensive way of jump st...

Buyer Beware!

Buyer Beware!

A store called “Big Lots!” moved into town this winter, and since I’d heard about clamp deals there I went to find out. They do have “deals”, F-type clamps for $6, parallel clamps for $10. I’ve purchased three types of clamps, the first put to the test were these 24” F-style bar clamps. At the store I was carefull to check that they all worked properly, then bought 10 for $60. When using them I found two problems, and one is a show stopper. Fir...

A great price on an acceptable clamp

A great price on an acceptable clamp

I was at the local Harbor Freight over the holidays and I noticed a bin full of 18” Ratcheting Bar clamps on sale for $2.99 each. The seemed to work well in the store and all were covered with a little bit of oil, presumably to protect the metallic parts. I didn’t really have a need for new clamps and I wasn’t sure if an 18” clamp would be useful or not but I figured I really couldn’t go wrong for only $2.99 (regularly $7.99 I think) so I bought 6 of them. T...

Another knock off success from Harbor Freight

Another knock off success from Harbor Freight

I realize that there may be many out there that dislike Harbor Freight, but when it comes to occasional use/accuracy not an issue tools, they are a viable, and cheap, alternative. While their tools tend to be pass or fail, these clamps are another pass. After seeing Askwoodman use the Festool and Bessy clamps, I knew I wanted some. However, at $40 each I couldn’t make myself hit the add to cart button, settling for continuing to use my traditional f clamps that I have always used. ...

LOCKJAW 7CCS Self-Adjusting Locking Clamp

Whilst viewing LJ’s Project page, some clamps popped up in the advertisement sidebar, so I decided to investigate. The blurb for the set of four clamps read as follows: Offering much more than the traditional variety, this set of four LockJaw self-adjusting locking clamps are perfect for getting the job done. Versatile and easy to use, the clamps are great for any number of jobs, and the patented LockJaw locking mechanism means the jaws open and adjust automatically to any size obje...

HF Aluminum bar clamp

HF Aluminum bar clamp

Heat wave yesterday! All the way up to 57F! So I decided to go shopping. I rinsed off the sawdust, trimmed the ear hair, unclogged the sink and cranked up the old DRam. I went to Harbor Freight to check on the locking casters reviewed recently, but really had to browse the whole store. I found a rack of aluminum bar clamps almost exactly like the ones I really like from Jorgensen. Had to get one (or so) of course. I picked the “36 inch”, a handy size, which actually has o...

Excellent clamp for the $$$

Excellent clamp for the $$$

Woodworker rules:1. You can’t have too many clamps.2. If you have too many clamps, see rule one. I know how some of you feel about HF and Pittsburgh tools, but I gotta say that these clamps are wonderful. They come in just the right sizes for what I need and they clamp tight and don’t scar the work. I tried a couple each last time I went to HF 2 – 6”, 2 – 12”, and 2 – 36” and just now I ordered 4 more of the 6” and 4 12”. Total...
