Buyer Beware!

Buyer Beware!

A store called “Big Lots!” moved into town this winter, and since I’d heard about clamp deals there I went to find out. They do have “deals”, F-type clamps for $6, parallel clamps for $10. I’ve purchased three types of clamps, the first put to the test were these 24” F-style bar clamps. At the store I was carefull to check that they all worked properly, then bought 10 for $60. When using them I found two problems, and one is a show stopper. Fir...

Harbor Freight Bar Clamps

Harbor Freight Bar Clamps

215 days ago by PCorl | 44 comments »

First off I agree with some here at LJ that Harbor Freight makes some real junk. I also agree with some here at LJ that Harbor Freight makes some pretty good stuff. I have been using Harbor Freight (Pittsburgh) F style bar clamps for some time now and am totally satisfied with them. For the cost they can’t be beat. When they aren’t on sale they range in price from $2.99 for a 6” clamp to $9.99 for the 36” model. On sale they are cheaper yet, I think I paid $1.99...

Irwin XP, One handed bar clamps/spreaders

Irwin XP, One handed bar clamps/spreaders

I received a pair of these 12’’ clamps as a gift. I have never used one handed clamps before this pair. Now whenever I have a clamping job, I grab these right away. It’s almost like having an extra hand, & they have plenty of clamping power. They provide 550 lbs of one-handed force (900 lbs of two-handed force). I also like the soft no-slip jaws, & you can reverse them to push things apart, such as chair rungs, or when dry fitting cabinet parts. ...

Good, low cost toggle clamps at Harbor Freight

Good, low cost toggle clamps at Harbor Freight

Just sharing this. When something raises my eyebrows and gets me thinking then maybe it’s worth passing on. I’m going to talk bang for buck. I hope you don’t mind. Yup, I’ve got a few harbor freight tools but not much. I’ve had mixed luck with them. But a friend let me see one of these toggle clamps. I have some from a wood store and I must say, they are very similar but not identical and but both seem to be of the same quality. They’re probably both fr...

Wood River Parallel Clamps

Wood River Parallel Clamps

Picked up a couple of these clamps with the sale that Woodcraft is having. I have always had Harbor Freight and Jorgensen F style clamps. I knew that I was going to need some clamping power with a project that I am working on and these turned out perfect. I bought the 40” model and they are great. Quality is excellent. I have used them a few times since I got them three days ago. They are able to hold as much pressure as I am able to give them. The cam handle is a little tricky...

A Very Versatile Clamp

A Very Versatile Clamp

I picked up these clamps when they first came out and have been extremely happy with them from the start. They need a 3/4” diameter hole to fit the bottom wedge assy into, tighten the knob and you are ready to clamp. Their holding power is terrific and very easy to release and move around as needed. I use these clamps all the time and they work great, I couldn’t imagine working without them.As ususal, the quality of the tools from Veritas is excellent, I highly recommend adding...

K-body clamp extenders

K-body clamp extenders

389 days ago by dsb1829 | 6 comments »

I picked up a set of the K-body clamp extenders a couple months back from Woodcraft. I had a table project coming up and knew that clamping the long aprons would require clamps in excess of the 50 inchers that I had. I was initially impressed by the solid construction of these. Honestly I think you would get back near half of the price in scrap value on the billet. The bolts are massive. The extrusion is formed to match the contours of the steel rails of the K-body clamps. Well last n...

Hell of a name, say it 3 times fast if you can. Hey people, I found these clamps at Lowes and have never seen any like them before. I like spring clamp for quick hold of light objects and I have a whole lot of different sized ones. Check these out, one clamp can hold 2 pieces of 1/8th” or hold a one by onto a saw horse. Package says 2” to 4” but the 2” is maximum without extending the arm LOL Actual usage is 2 pieces of paper up to 4 1/4”. At $4.97 each, I reall...

Jet Parallel Clamp

Jet Parallel Clamp

I got a pair of 12” clamps last winter and they are really nice. I was using pipe clamps and was having trouble with my glue ups not staying flush. I was getting a lot of cup and would have to clamp some 2 X 2 on each end to stop it from happening. I got these clamps and now I don’t have that problem. About a month ago I got a pair of 31” because the 12” where a little short for some of my glue ups. I really like them also. Really easy to move the movable jaw on the ba...
