Harbor Freight = an exercise in readjusting your expectations ... it is what it is.

I go back some 16 years with Harbor Freight Tools…. And while I don’t often buy from them, I was reminded today that I have to readjust my expectations to reflect their low price point… As a company, I have to say that Harbor Freight has always resolved any issues I’ve had with their products, it wasn’t always a speedy solution, but in the end they made it right. So given the recent positive review about their ‘F’ style bar clamps…. and me...

Harbor Freight Bar Clamps

Harbor Freight Bar Clamps

First off I agree with some here at LJ that Harbor Freight makes some real junk. I also agree with some here at LJ that Harbor Freight makes some pretty good stuff. I have been using Harbor Freight (Pittsburgh) F style bar clamps for some time now and am totally satisfied with them. For the cost they can’t be beat. When they aren’t on sale they range in price from $2.99 for a 6” clamp to $9.99 for the 36” model. On sale they are cheaper yet, I think I paid $1.99...

Excellent clamp for the $$$

Excellent clamp for the $$$

Woodworker rules:1. You can’t have too many clamps.2. If you have too many clamps, see rule one. I know how some of you feel about HF and Pittsburgh tools, but I gotta say that these clamps are wonderful. They come in just the right sizes for what I need and they clamp tight and don’t scar the work. I tried a couple each last time I went to HF 2 – 6”, 2 – 12”, and 2 – 36” and just now I ordered 4 more of the 6” and 4 12”. Total...

They suck

They suck

9 days ago by Rick M. | 37 comments »

Not very descriptive title but accurate. Around Christmas I bought a bag of these for $5 and feel I was ripped off. I didn’t even open the bag until a month ago and three have gone in the trash. One was clamped to a wood extension on my miter gauge, came apart and flew into the blade, no damage except to my wits. Another was clamping my drill press fence and suddenly exploded, again my wits took a beating. On another, the spring just broke through the handle. Quite a few more feel like ...

HF 6" ratchet clamp... why do I do this to myself?!?

HF 6" ratchet clamp... why do I do this to myself?!?

So I picked up 2 Harbor Freight 6” ratchet clamps a while back and they worked just fine… for 1.99 clamps. The holding pressure wasn’t a whole lot but for little jobs it was fine. The alignment/parallelism of the actual clamp pads are off by several degrees no matter how much you clamp it down. But again… 1.99 clamps. This past weekend I was using it to help me assemble a decorative fence around my wife’s garden. After a short period in the sun the plastic got...

Buyer Beware!

Buyer Beware!

A store called “Big Lots!” moved into town this winter, and since I’d heard about clamp deals there I went to find out. They do have “deals”, F-type clamps for $6, parallel clamps for $10. I’ve purchased three types of clamps, the first put to the test were these 24” F-style bar clamps. At the store I was carefull to check that they all worked properly, then bought 10 for $60. When using them I found two problems, and one is a show stopper. Fir...

Bessey Falls Down On key Features

Bessey Falls Down On key Features

Pros:Great handle is easy to grip.Easy to release.Bar has decent rigidity.Large clamp pad surface area. Cons:Difficult to engage clamping pressure – clamps often won’t “bite” then you are forced to reset the threads and try again. This usually occurs during a glueup, when time is of the essence.Nothing holds he moveable clamp head in position when not in use. Occasionally that part will slide down the bar and slam into the fixed head. Most clamps have triggers to...

A clamp like no other.

A clamp like no other.

It is a very old saw that one cannot have too many regular clamps. At work for instance I run about 40 of the Jorgensen 3700 series and still wish I had more at times. Yet it is the specialty clamps that we have that sometimes get you out of a jamb or simply make life a whole lot easier. To that end I have spring clamps, band clamps, little tiny C-clamps and a host of others that step up only when that seems the way to work. I’m sure you all have them too. One of my specialty tool...

Worst tool I have ever owned

Worst tool I have ever owned

I bought two of these bar clamps for $8.99 ea at a Harbor Freight store. On one of them the tab on the movable jaw rounded over after a few uses to the point where it would not engage the slots in the bar. The casting on the fixed jaw of the other clamp broke under moderate pressure.I bought them because i liked the design, the length is adjustable. i wrote to Harbor Freight and they offered to send replacements if I returned the broken clamps, they would pay postage. i had already tossed ...

I have never spent any real money on clamps and now that I have I now regret not doing it sooner. I dropped the coin to get some Bessey Revo clamps and cant believe how much I like them. So much I wanted to share. Here is a short video review. http://youtu.be/J4KMRo0bdVs
