Some Knife!

Some Knife!

699 days ago by mpounders | 3 comments »

I really didn’t need another knife, but I have wondered how I might like a scimitar shape blade and I have admired the knives that Brandant Robinson makes. I was on his website and happened to see he had one of his catapiller style knives available, so I decided to order it while my wife was agreeable! This was on Saturday, a little before noon. I had recieved an email from Brandant confirming my order and saying it had been shipped in less than 2 hours! On a Saturday no less! He had h...

A good chisel for 9$ each

A good chisel for 9$ each

This is my first set of chisels that are not meant to be smashed with a sledge hammer. I bought these for a few reasons: 1 – they were on sale from 89.99 to 53.992 – The Bubinga handles are REALLY well done. Both to look at and they are really comfortable to hold3 – (According to the woodcraft guy) US Steel and assembled in the US, although the box comes from China. 4 – It had every size I needed5 – Hardened to RC-59 (same as Narex) I was originally going t...

Turds That Take a Surprising Polish

Turds That Take a Surprising Polish

So I am working on my workbench that will be made of doug fir. I started making the mortises which I hogged out with a Forstner bit and then I reached for my Narex bench chisels to clean them up. All three of the Narex chisels I used got dinged up blades rather quickly. Not wanting to do any more damage to them (which I probably just didn’t have set up for chopping out corners), I bought this cheap set from Harbor Freight knowing that they had a high likelihood of being total garbage...

A well spent $29.00

A well spent $29.00

If you cut as sloppy as I do, it is always nice to have a good set of paring/gouging/shaving chisels. I wanted a set butt chisels even back when I was strictly using machinery for woodworking. Butt chisels are really nice for using one handed. I have known about these WoodRiver chisels for a while, but never bothered with them due to alot of negative reviews. I stopped by my local WoodCraft yesterday looking for a piece of Beechwood for a mallet head that I want to make. I happened to see th...

How to Upgrade Chisels?

How to Upgrade Chisels?

I have really enjoyed my Marples Blue Chip Chisels passed down in my family. I like the quick sharpening of the O-1 carbon steel. I have cut a few dovetails now with them in a few projects and practice but would like a bit nicer set or few new chisels. I am wanting to purchase a new set. I am debating between these now: Lie Nielsen A 2 Bench ChiselsBarr Tools 0 1 Cabinet Makers Chiselsand just maybe Blue Spruce A 2 if only a couple new ones. I would like any comments if you have use...

Great value chisel set.Any woodworker will laugh at the state of sharpness of these. The packaging states `Sharpened & ready to use but a bit of sharpening on the oilstone got them to a razer egde. Product Description Marples Ms500 Soft Touch B/E Chisel Set 5 Metal striking cap allows use with a hammer, prolongs the life of the handle and prevents mushrooming. The soft touch handles are oil and water resistant to prevent slippage and to give improved comfort even during prolon...

Easy to sharpen but lack durability

Easy to sharpen but lack durability

There have been so many positive reviews about these chisels that I thought I’d chime in with my experience with them. I’ve had these chisels for about 6 months. They were my first set of “real” ie. not big box store chisels. I’d read many positive reviews about the Narex set, and they are very reasonably priced, so I took the plunge. Overall, the machining and finish of the chisels was excellent. It took very little effort to lap the backs flat. I keep them ...

DeWalt Side Strike Chisel Really Work

DeWalt Side Strike Chisel Really Work

836 days ago by Harry_Ch | 7 comments »

Recently got the DeWalt Side Strike Chisel because I needed a tool that could take being used and abused but wouldn’t complain about it later. Saw the batoning chisel LV has, but got to handle this one first. Out of the box(so to speak), it has a good sturdy blade with a 1 inch chisel nose along with an equally good side bevel/serrated edge(dang left-handed design). The handle is thick enough to fit your hand very well, regardless of which way you are holding it. That’s hard to...

Swedish Sloyd Knife

Swedish Sloyd Knife

863 days ago by jjw5858 | 5 comments »

Just a few weeks back I received this little treat I picked up for myself from the Lee Valley Tools website, a Swedish Sloyd Knife! This retails for $15.50 and I was plesantly surprised that for a cheaper costing carver knife that this is a very handy shop knife to have around. I would have preferred wood to the hard plastic handle (AHHH Its 16 bucks..lol)...but it fits nicely to the contours of the hand, has a sharp blade, and cuts nice for a Sunday afternoon of whittling…...(See...
