Sideways Cutting

I’ve never been much for batoning. All that hewing and froeing, to what end? Odd shaped chunks of wood for rustic furniture or homemade shingles? Turning blanks? Exotic construction? Not my bag; I’d rather split infinitives. What I do like is having specialty tools that go where others can’t and then do the impossible. Like these very tiny planes. They are are a set of two (L&R handed) side cutting chisels available from Lee Valley under the Chestnut...

First Impressions Review of Wood River Butt Chisels

First Impressions Review of Wood River Butt Chisels

First Impressions Review of Wood River Butt Chisels My lovely Wife bought these for me for Christmas this year. I’ve been eyeing them for a while, mostly due to the beautiful Bubinga handles that fit so wonderfully in the palm and the on-sale price of $29.99. This is just a short review based on the initial set up and a few paring and chopping exercises. The set is four chisels in 1 inch, ¾ inch, ½ inch and ¼ inch. Overall fit and finish is quite good for an economy set of chisels. It...

Prelimenary review for Buck Bros. Set of 5 Crank Neck Paring Chisels

Prelimenary review for Buck Bros. Set of 5 Crank Neck Paring Chisels

A few weeks ago I took a class with Chris Gochnour who often writes tool reviews for Fine Woodworking Magazine. He had just bought a set of Buck Bros Crank Neck Paring Chisels and a set of straight paring chisels. Like, I am sure most of you, I know this brand of chisels as a cheap brand from the Home Depot. These chisels are different , they are made by the “real” company which makes chisels and cutting tools since 1864 (http://www.craftsmanstudio.com/html_p/BuckBrosChisels.htm)....

Veritas PM-V11 Bench Chisel really delivers!!

Veritas PM-V11 Bench Chisel really delivers!!

First off, I will not profess to be an expert on chisels, i do not have a toolchest full of Lie-Nielsens for which to compare, so I will give you an honest opinion based on what i do know. Not wildly impressed by the packaging, however, it is utilitarian, and a decent storage box for the chisel until it finds a new home in the tool cabinet that i’m working on. The chisel comes with a wax protector on the sharp end, the metal was all coated in a light coat of oil that was easily remov...

Henry taylor carving tools

Henry taylor carving tools

Right off the bat, i will say these aren’t as good as the Pfiel chisels. They are however a very high quality set made in England, and at a very reasonable price. I got this set of 6 tools from lee valley a few months ago for about $140. I definitely recommend these tools to any beginning carver, like myself. It came with all 5/16 or 1/4 inch tools, so they aren’t very big chisels. There is a #1, #3, #5, #6, #7 fishtail, #8 and a 60 degree v-tool . Before I bought this set, I ...

Some Knife!

Some Knife!

08-10-2012 03:01 AM by mpounders | 3 comments »

I really didn’t need another knife, but I have wondered how I might like a scimitar shape blade and I have admired the knives that Brandant Robinson makes. I was on his website and happened to see he had one of his catapiller style knives available, so I decided to order it while my wife was agreeable! This was on Saturday, a little before noon. I had recieved an email from Brandant confirming my order and saying it had been shipped in less than 2 hours! On a Saturday no less! He had h...

A good chisel for 9$ each

A good chisel for 9$ each

This is my first set of chisels that are not meant to be smashed with a sledge hammer. I bought these for a few reasons: 1 – they were on sale from 89.99 to 53.992 – The Bubinga handles are REALLY well done. Both to look at and they are really comfortable to hold3 – (According to the woodcraft guy) US Steel and assembled in the US, although the box comes from China. 4 – It had every size I needed5 – Hardened to RC-59 (same as Narex) I was originally going t...

Turds That Take a Surprising Polish

Turds That Take a Surprising Polish

So I am working on my workbench that will be made of doug fir. I started making the mortises which I hogged out with a Forstner bit and then I reached for my Narex bench chisels to clean them up. All three of the Narex chisels I used got dinged up blades rather quickly. Not wanting to do any more damage to them (which I probably just didn’t have set up for chopping out corners), I bought this cheap set from Harbor Freight knowing that they had a high likelihood of being total garbage...

A well spent $29.00

A well spent $29.00

If you cut as sloppy as I do, it is always nice to have a good set of paring/gouging/shaving chisels. I wanted a set butt chisels even back when I was strictly using machinery for woodworking. Butt chisels are really nice for using one handed. I have known about these WoodRiver chisels for a while, but never bothered with them due to alot of negative reviews. I stopped by my local WoodCraft yesterday looking for a piece of Beechwood for a mallet head that I want to make. I happened to see th...
