they took time to set up but they stay sharp!!!

First of all, I want to say thanks for the responses to my forum topic http://lumberjocks.com/topics/17579I decided to give them a try because I love the size and feel of these chisels. Grizzly was fast to send them out. The only reason I did not give these chisels 5 stars is because they took a lot of work to flatten and sharpen. The third picture is the worst chisel of the bunch laying on my table saw. I did get it flat and sharpened though. I used the scary sharp method( glass and sand pap...

Good value set, and thats about it

Good value set, and thats about it

I got these from Leevalley with the set of Narex Skewed chisels and this review is very similar to that review as my experience with both sets was almost the same , Up until now I was using bench chisels for mortising and it left a lot to be desired, when I saw that Narex had a decent set for an affordable amount, I decided to go for it and keep my bench chisels for other lighter purposes. First Impression:Taking them out of the package I was instantly surprised by the lightness of the han...

Traditional Woodworker chisels

Traditional Woodworker chisels

822 days ago by dbray45 | 7 comments »

I purchased 6 chisels of this set. I was looking for a set of chisels that were in inches and not metric conversion like most of the chisels out there. My current set of Marples/Irwin/blue handled chisels have been good to me but are not real hard and keeping them sharp has been an issue. So, I bought the 1/8, 3/16, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, and 5/8” chisels since these were the sizes that I will use the most. The way they are labeled is also nice and readable. These chisels, like all the r...

King Arthur Tools Carbide Abrasive Sphere Burr, 1/4"shank x 1" dia. P/N 11007

King Arthur Tools Carbide Abrasive Sphere Burr, 1/4"shank x 1" dia. P/N 11007

I would like to give my 2 cents on a burr that I JUST started using to shape the concaved surfaced of my custom fly fishing nets. I was looking for a faster/easier way than using scrapers, rasps, and sanders. It’s a Carbide Abrasive 1” Sphere Burr by King Arthur. This Sphere Burr fit flex shafts, mini die grinders and air grinders and has a 1/4” shank x 1” diameter. It’s also available in European 6mm shanks.I use it on the lowest setting of my Rotozip which ...

Precision Rotary Carving Tool

Precision Rotary Carving Tool

I wanted to recommend this tool after using it for over a month. I have a variety of roatary tools that I use for carving, in addition to traditional hand tools. And each tool seems to fill certain needs. I started with a Dremel (25k rpms) and added a flex-shaft and it was good for a variety of things, but it wouldn’t take larger 1/4” attachments. My Foredom flex-shaft with footpedal is great for roughing out and sanding and is really durable and powerful, even thought the rpms ...

Prelimenary review for Buck Bros. Set of 5 Crank Neck Paring Chisels

Prelimenary review for Buck Bros. Set of 5 Crank Neck Paring Chisels

180 days ago by b2rtch | 6 comments »

A few weeks ago I took a class with Chris Gochnour who often writes tool reviews for Fine Woodworking Magazine. He had just bought a set of Buck Bros Crank Neck Paring Chisels and a set of straight paring chisels. Like, I am sure most of you, I know this brand of chisels as a cheap brand from the Home Depot. These chisels are different , they are made by the “real” company which makes chisels and cutting tools since 1864 (http://www.craftsmanstudio.com/html_p/BuckBrosChisels.htm)....

3D Router Carver System by CMT

3D Router Carver System by CMT

Quite a few years ago I purchased a CMT 3D Router Carver System by CMT.My first project was the front of a cedar chest I built for my oldest son as a wedding gift. It allowed me add a professional looking carving on the front of the chest without screwing it up since I do not know how to carve. I have had this tool for at least 10 years and for a while it went out of production but a couple of years ago they reintroduced it. It is easy to set up and as long as you have a ½” plunge rout...

Namazori Chisels

Namazori Chisels

I’ve been using these chisels, available in 5/8” and 3/4”, for about ten years I guess. I purchased them from Japan Woodworkers website. http://www.japanwoodworker.com These chisels are incredibly useful, but also somewhat dangerous to us western woodworkers. The way in which we tend to handle chisels leads to cut thumbs, as both sides are razor sharp. It took me a while to get used to that fact. They are designed to be used in carving back rounds smooth, or to clean...

finally found something to carve out the bowl of a spoon

finally found something to carve out the bowl of a spoon

1874 days ago by Joey | 7 comments »

Ever since I started making spoons and spatulas back at christmas, I have been looking for a tool that makes carving the bowl of a spoon easier. I started out using a dremel. The problem with the dremel’s is that you can’t find carving heads big enough. All of the power grinders I had found were $300+. But Woodcraft has a new tool made by Wecheer. It is simply to use, and has more than enough power using carving bits with 1/4” shanks. The first time i used it, I cut th...

Expected more, but They are good enough.

I got the MHG 6 Bench Chisels set. For the market price of $110 I expected these to be of somewhat higher quality than the “big store” economy sets. The FeelThey actually feel lighter then the (english) rubber handle Marples I have, and the blade seems slightly thinner. other then that, they do feel very comfortable to hold, and work with. the handle is round, but flattened out on both sides, which keeps it from rolling around the workbench, and falling off the floor… ...
