Pinewood Forge -kolrosing from the recliner

Pinewood Forge -kolrosing from the recliner

1495 days ago by Elaine | 10 comments »

I was in a quandary several weeks ago, fractured heel/ripped tendon and a “fashionable” new boot. I was googling -woodworking from the barcalounger (recliner) or some such and ran across Del Stubb’s Pinewood Forge sight. Ordered a couple packages -kolrosing and spoon carving along with the knives. The tools are wonderful, easy to use and easy to sharpen. The Kolrosing Knife itself is a piece of art, well balanced and comes sharpened and ready to use. IMHO, prices are ve...

A step up from my no-name chisels

A step up from my no-name chisels

I know next to nothing about chisels but I’ve been trying to use them a bit. I’ve got some cheap set, probably from Home Depot, with nicks in them that I work around. I’d like to learn how to sharpen them but haven’t started down that path yet. I’ve read mixed reviews about these chisels but something inside me said to get them so I did. They came covered in some kind of oil that I removed with mineral spirits (please tell me if I’ve already ruined th...

Benjamin's best carbide pen turning chisels

Benjamin's best carbide pen turning chisels

I bought these hoping they would make turning acrylic blanks easier since they should be sharper than I can make my old Crafstman turning chisels. YES THEY ARE! Turning acrylic blanks is a breeze with these carbide chisels. They worked so well that I use them on wood blanks too. I’ve turned about 15 pens with a mix of acrylic and wood blanks including a dyed burl and a couple of laminated blanks and these chisels are great. I wish I had bought them sooner.

Sideways Cutting

Sideways Cutting

I’ve never been much for batoning. All that hewing and froeing, to what end? Odd shaped chunks of wood for rustic furniture or homemade shingles? Turning blanks? Exotic construction? Not my bag; I’d rather split infinitives. What I do like is having specialty tools that go where others can’t and then do the impossible. Like these very tiny planes. They are are a set of two (L&R handed) side cutting chisels available from Lee Valley under the Chestnut...

Power Carving - No Chisels required.

Power Carving - No Chisels required.

When I was asked to make a frame for Mark’s Memorial I wanted to do an inlay and I bought a router base that is used in the string instrument industry. It uses a Dremel of a Fordem as the power source. I select the Foredom option. That required the purchase of another new tool. So thats not all bad. I bought the #5200 model It contains two hand pieces, but neither of them would fit on the router base i selected, so I had to purchase a hand piece that fit the router base. The Route...

Carving & shaping made easy

You don’t have to be an expert carver to justify buying this tool (thats what you tell the ladies anyway, or the hubby if you are a lady Jock). it fits on an ordinary 4” (100mm) grinder). http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff192/GRUMPY1946/Reviews/Arbortech%20Carving%20Disc/ArbortechCarvingDisc-04.jpgIt has three circular tungsten cutters which can be rotated when the lose the sharp edge. http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff192/GRUMPY1946/Reviews/Arbortech%20Carving%20Disc/Arbort...

Great replacement for Dremel

Great replacement for Dremel

1264 days ago by reggiek | 19 comments »

Santa was a bit late this year….but he came through with this Proxxon Rotary Tool. My 1-1/2 year old dremel passed away and even new brushes would not revive it. I did some research on these tools and found that this one was made to be used continuously and had a brushless motor. The dremel had a tendency to get really hot and cut out after any continuous use over 20 minutes or so – so it did not get serious use. I always worried that it would catch on fire or cease working̷...

No Longer In Search Of... Stanley 750 SW Chisels!

Stanley 750 “SW” Chisels Not the easiest things to purchase by any stretch (see In Search of blog entry here – http://lumberjocks.com/Smitty_Cabinetshop/blog/22223), but now these tools are in hand. If this review is entertaining, great. If you’re interested in what to expect from a purchase of Stanley SW 750s, continue reading. If it’s a side-by-side comparison with Lie-Nielsen, Ashley-Iles or 2 Cherries that the reader is after, frustration awaits. I’ll start with a disclaimer t...

Lee Valley Bevel Edge Chisels

Lee Valley Bevel Edge Chisels

At $76.00, these chisels are a great buy for all around shop use. I have had them a year now and have re-honed them only once. They really hold an edge. The set goes from 1/4” – 1 1/2”. The oblong handles are comfortable, don’t roll around and can take a real beating. They are better than the Marples and the other big box brands that I have used.
