Ashley Iles Mk 2 Bevel Edged Cabinetmakers Chisels I have for as long as I can remember wished for a quality set of chisels and few years ago I took the decision to spend the money on a set of Bahco 434, and boy did I regret this after… Why? Because what I was looking for was a set of cabinetmaker chisels and not the perfect on site construction chisel that also would be used for opening beer and cans of paint! Say what! This is actually meant as a compliment bec...

No Longer In Search Of... Stanley 750 SW Chisels!

Stanley 750 “SW” Chisels Not the easiest things to purchase by any stretch (see In Search of blog entry here – http://lumberjocks.com/Smitty_Cabinetshop/blog/22223), but now these tools are in hand. If this review is entertaining, great. If you’re interested in what to expect from a purchase of Stanley SW 750s, continue reading. If it’s a side-by-side comparison with Lie-Nielsen, Ashley-Iles or 2 Cherries that the reader is after, frustration awaits. I’ll start with a disclaimer t...

Narex mortise Chisels Set of 5

Narex mortise Chisels Set of 5

I bought a five piece set of Narex mortise chisels and so far have had an opportunity to actual work with one. I’m quite pleased with the fit and finish and this steel quality which seems to be just right for my liking. Not too brittle, takes an edge quickly and seems to sharpen without leaving too much curl on the cutting-edge.(Rc59) They have a nice weight to them in a nice feel in my hand and the blades are definitely long enough to be able to hold the blade in alignment while gentl...

How to Upgrade Chisels?

How to Upgrade Chisels?

I have really enjoyed my Marples Blue Chip Chisels passed down in my family. I like the quick sharpening of the O-1 carbon steel. I have cut a few dovetails now with them in a few projects and practice but would like a bit nicer set or few new chisels. I am wanting to purchase a new set. I am debating between these now: Lie Nielsen A 2 Bench ChiselsBarr Tools 0 1 Cabinet Makers Chiselsand just maybe Blue Spruce A 2 if only a couple new ones. I would like any comments if you have use...

Not sure whether or not I am supposed to say that something is on sale somewhere, but I thought it sounded like a good deal, and wondered how others found these chisels to be. Stanley Sweetheart Series 750 Chisels. I have a Woodriver set, and some ole Irwins now, but want to upgrade. Stanley Sweetheart Series 750 Chisels – $99 – 4 pc set, 1/4” – 1”, w/leather pouch

I finally used that Gift Card!

I finally used that Gift Card!

A couple years ago, shortly before Christmas, Debbie and I experienced some hardship…Without going into the details all over again, my Friends from Lumberjocks took it upon themselves to try to make our Yuletide a merrier one… an attempt, that was hugely successful!!One of the folks here anonymously sent me a $50 Gift Card to Lee Valley! To be honest, the card got mis-placed, in all the shuffling and jostling around of the moves we made…I despaired of ever finding it again&#...

Luckily You Don't Always Get What You Pay For!

Having read mixed reviews of Windsor Design chisels from Harbor Freight, I decided to check them out for myself, and I’m very glad I did. As most of the reviews were dated, some going back as far as 2012, I do believe the Windsor Design folks have taken notice. For the unbelievably low price of $9.99, the six-piece set #62641 is quite remarkable. Out of the package the grinding was somewhat rough, but like all new chisels they need sharpening. The handles seemed fine to me, hefty an...

IBC chisels

IBC chisels

05-21-2018 07:20 PM by Cocosquatch | 24 comments »

Hi All, As all my bench chisels have side angles less than 90 degrees, that go all the way to the back of the chisels, not long ago I have decided to look around for some chisels with 90 degrees sides to the backs of the chisels. I remember that a while back IBC was looking into making chisels and because I already had two IBC plane blades in use for a long time now, so I’ve decided to look at their chisels. When looking for more information about these new chisels over the internet, ...

Why Did I Wait So Long?

Why Did I Wait So Long?

My first foray into 17th-Century New England carving was a blast! I hesitated for years taking that first step, due to indecision as to what tools to use. I have always been an advocate of, knowing how to use a tool is more important than the tool in and of itself.  Well, I’m now convinced that that  does not necessarily apply to carving tools. Having used some rather inexpensive tools with most disastrous results, I decided to give the Hirsch Werkzeuge carving tools a try, and I’...

Are Expensive Chisels Worth The Money? Western Bench Chisel Comparison

Are Expensive Chisels Worth The Money? Western Bench Chisel Comparison

04-21-2017 04:09 AM by WoodWorkLIFE | 22 comments »

A question that has plagued woodworkers for eras. In this video, I take a look at western bench chisels to understand what makes them tick. I test for ease of sharpening, ergonomics, the utility of the blade length/stays and overall feel. I took all of the chisels to a 27-degree bevel to really get a feel for sharpening them and to get rid of that first bit of possibly over hardened steel, I flattened the back, and then I just had-at-it living with them for a few months. The video is a sy...
