Namazori Chisels
635 days ago by Lee A. Jesberger | 18 comments »
I’ve been using these chisels, available in 5/8” and 3/4”, for about ten years I guess. I purchased them from Japan Woodworkers website. http://www.japanwoodworker.com These chisels are incredibly useful, but also somewhat dangerous to us western woodworkers. The way in which we tend to handle chisels leads to cut thumbs, as both sides are razor sharp. It took me a while to get used to that fact. They are designed to be used in carving back rounds smooth, or to clean...
Balance, precision, handling, control... Sounds like a sports car? It's a chisel!

Well, not just any chisel, a Lie-Nielson bevel edge socket chisel! Looking through the offerings at my local Woodcraft one evening, I spotted a beautiful set of chisels in a leather roll. Asking the salesman to open the case, I had a closer inspection. The feel was perfect, no uncomfortable bandings and they balance so well. The roll had 5 chisels in the set, with the smallest being 1/8”. Considering I do a considerable about of 1/8” inlay, I really liked these. I was taken aback ...
Lancelot,Squire by King Arthur Tools

This tool along with or by itself, the Squire fits on any 4 or 4 1/2 inch handgrinder and what it is is basically a miny chainsaw. I’ve owned one for 4 years or more and would’nt know what I’d do without it. I’ve used it on wood on the lathe to hog out wood, to hog out seats when making chairs, anytime you need to get rid of a lot of wood without using a saw or rasp or chisel. You can rake it along the wood and it’s like taking a chainsaw and raking it along a pl...

Ashley Iles Bench Chisels - Beautiful but they will need some edge work
607 days ago by ChicoWoodnut | 9 comments »
After using a set of older Craftsman chisels for years, I decided I wanted a fine set of bench chisels. The Craftsman chisels have served me well and I will continue to use them, but they are a little short thick and unwieldy. I like fine tools so I decided to treat myself for my 50th birthday. I have been looking for a good set on e-bay but the prices the older sets of Stanley chisels fetch these days is silly. I landed on the Ashley Iles because they are known for fine edge tools. ...
Pinewood Forge -kolrosing from the recliner

I was in a quandary several weeks ago, fractured heel/ripped tendon and a “fashionable” new boot. I was googling -woodworking from the barcalounger (recliner) or some such and ran across Del Stubb’s Pinewood Forge sight. Ordered a couple packages -kolrosing and spoon carving along with the knives. The tools are wonderful, easy to use and easy to sharpen. The Kolrosing Knife itself is a piece of art, well balanced and comes sharpened and ready to use. IMHO, prices are ve...

You don’t have to be an expert carver to justify buying this tool (thats what you tell the ladies anyway, or the hubby if you are a lady Jock). it fits on an ordinary 4” (100mm) grinder). http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff192/GRUMPY1946/Reviews/Arbortech%20Carving%20Disc/ArbortechCarvingDisc-04.jpgIt has three circular tungsten cutters which can be rotated when the lose the sharp edge. http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff192/GRUMPY1946/Reviews/Arbortech%20Carving%20Disc/Arbort...
finally found something to carve out the bowl of a spoon
602 days ago by Joey | 7 comments »
Ever since I started making spoons and spatulas back at christmas, I have been looking for a tool that makes carving the bowl of a spoon easier. I started out using a dremel. The problem with the dremel’s is that you can’t find carving heads big enough. All of the power grinders I had found were $300+. But Woodcraft has a new tool made by Wecheer. It is simply to use, and has more than enough power using carving bits with 1/4” shanks. The first time i used it, I cut th...
Power Carving - No Chisels required.

When I was asked to make a frame for Mark’s Memorial I wanted to do an inlay and I bought a router base that is used in the string instrument industry. It uses a Dremel of a Fordem as the power source. I select the Foredom option. That required the purchase of another new tool. So thats not all bad. I bought the #5200 model It contains two hand pieces, but neither of them would fit on the router base i selected, so I had to purchase a hand piece that fit the router base. The Route...

Having followed late last year it was noted with great sadness that this company had closed it doors. It supposedly made the greatest rasps for woodworkers in the world. Each one is handcrafted by an artisan in France who had to train for 3 years to until they are allowed to forge, heat treat and hand stitch a rasp whose teeth are cut very regular, but always spaced a bit little off with each tooth cutting a slightly different path than its predecessor. This results in a tool that is both po...
