Teaching a class at Lee Valley

Teaching a class at Lee Valley

I want to start by saying I enjoyed myself and I think the students left with better hand tool and dovetail skills than they started with. I had many handshakes and smiles at the end, so I hope everyone feels that they got their moneys worth of instruction. Now the critique. there was a critique form for the students, but not for me. I had offered to teach a different class, but told them I was flexible if they needed something covered off, which I am. I received an e-mail some weeks la...

Learning French Marquetry

Learning French Marquetry

I’ve been off-line for the past two weeks, so my LJ activity went completely dark. But I’ve now returned from two delightful weeks at the American School of French Marquetry. I wanted to up my box game a bit, and thought some study with two extremely talented and accomplished craftsmen would be one way to do it. I also owe Paul Miller (shipwright) for his encouragement to attend. There have been a number of blogs and posts about the ASFM school, so I won’t attempt to repeat what’s ...

Finishing A to Z: Beyond the Books

Finishing A to Z: Beyond the Books

Finishing A to Z: Beyond the Books – So how useful is the set of DVD’s going to be? “Very much I hope” My finishing skills leave a lot to be desired – A REAL LOT so much in fact that if you see most of my projects on LJ they are all hand applied and natural finishes with no stains or dyes. The price of this DVD set was about $120.00. The first one bought was got and watched was not impressive it was very limited in content and Charles and Bob spent too much time just talking with...

Open Up a New World on Woodworking

I took a sharpening class at the Birmingham Woodcraft store a while back. I really didn’t know it then, but that class really has opened up my woodworking world. My projects are getting more involved and really more fun because I now have very sharp tools. If you have never had a sharpening class, you should make it your priority. I would have gotten into the woodturning world and stayed there about 10 minutes without sharp tools. Plane irons and chisels just about cut through ...

Local school just getting started: Worth the Effort

Local school just getting started: Worth the Effort

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FToA4gh6Ths&feature=youtu.beThis school recently opened not far from where I live. I attended one of their ‘Free Friday’ classes and both learned a lot and enjoyed myself. The teacher has lots of enthusiasm and knowledge; and since he was a school teacher, he knows how to teach. The environment is extra friendly and the equipment first rate. A lot of thought went into setting this place up, and they did all the work themselves.I was there when th...

A good time is had by all

A good time is had by all

I worked the WIA show this past weekend in Pasadena, Ca. showing the Earlex tools in a booth and also running a seminar titled “HVLP Spray finishing made simple” which was well attended by many of my woodworking friends, customers and newbies trying to figure things out. Overall the show was a success, the woodworking TV stars and authors had great attendance in the building next door to the trade show area. It would have been nice if everything could have been in the same buildin...
