Learning French Marquetry

Learning French Marquetry

57 days ago by RogerBean | 11 comments »

I’ve been off-line for the past two weeks, so my LJ activity went completely dark. But I’ve now returned from two delightful weeks at the American School of French Marquetry. I wanted to up my box game a bit, and thought some study with two extremely talented and accomplished craftsmen would be one way to do it. I also owe Paul Miller (shipwright) for his encouragement to attend. There have been a number of blogs and posts about the ASFM school, so I won’t attempt to repeat what’s ...

Beginner’s SketchUp Tutorial

My first review, I’m not a typist so I going to make this brief. I have wanted to learn SketchUp for some time now.,I have followed many courses on Google and other web sites but this really got me going. http://www.srww.com/blog/?p=1335 It’s from a wood worker that really knows this program. It helps if you have multiple monitors but if not you can watch and pause or you can even download a mpg 4 to watch offline. It starts you off building a Bedroom Side table and teaches you ve...

Learn Google Sketchup in a Weekend with Robert Lang

Learn Google Sketchup in a Weekend with Robert Lang

The Woodcraft store in Atlanta offered this class, which is three 8-hour days of training (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). I signed up after they dropped the price from $449 to $349. Overall, it was a very good class. Mr. Lang is engaging, knowledgeable, and clearly has deep knowledge of both woodworking and Sketchup. The content, apart from the basic Sketchup tools and navigation, was completely oriented toward woodworking, and was very useful. Mr. Lang mastered Sketchup by necessity, as...

The Wood Whisperer Split Roubo Guild Build

The Wood Whisperer Split Roubo Guild Build

I am surprised that there has not been a review of TWW guild posted before. I am a novice wood worker and last spring I decided it was time to build my first workbench. I dont plan on building more than one of these, so I decided to build the best one that I could. After doing all the obligatory research by reading Schwarz’s book, Landis’ book and reading all I could here on LJ’s, I still didn’t feel I had the skills to pull this off. So, I joined the TWW guild spec...

Homestead Heritage School of Woodworking - Joinery I Class

Homestead Heritage School of Woodworking - Joinery I Class

828 days ago by cakman | 9 comments »

Last Friday I took a 1 day class at the Homestead Heritage School of Woodworking in Waco Texas. Homestead Heritage is a traditional Crafts Village where members of their community grow up with and learn trades such as pottery, black smithing, furniture making, and traditional ways of making fabric and clothing. This was my first experience visiting and I was pleasantly surprised at how willing they were to share their knowledge and genuine hospitality with guests. On to the woodworking. ...

A box making vacation in England

A box making vacation in England

1552 days ago by RogerBean | 6 comments »

For the aspiring cellist to spend three days with Yo-Yo Ma would be something special, certainly. For an aspiring box maker to spend three days one on one with Andrew Crawford is similar. Earlier this month, I had the pleasure to visit Andrew’s shop in Shropshire, England, and had such a great experience others might like to hear about it. Andrew builds what I consider “traditional” boxes. I confess to a clear preference for boxes that look like boxes. Many types of containers fall into...

Charles Neil Free Project Videos

Charles Neil Free Project Videos

While I am not an experienced woodworker I do occasionally gain skills and knowledge. I would like to recommend these free videos by Charles. I can’t say how much I have learned from them other than I feel I have gotten more out of these videos than all of the other free things I have seen on the internet, combined. Really a first class instruction and a down home feeling in the production. Project Videos

Live Edge Table

Live Edge Table

480 days ago by Justin57 | 11 comments »

I recently went to visit with my friend Charles Neil (New Market, VA), at his shop. Our friend Jim Pell was there building a corner cabinet and during my visit I went with Jim to C.P. Johnson Lumber (Elkwood, VA), to pick out some tiger maple. While there CP found me a very nice slab of cherry (8/4×17” x 7’), so I bought it with the intent to make a sofa table with a live edge look. With assistance and input from Charles, I spent 2 days carving the top, 2 days carving the ...

Local school just getting started: Worth the Effort

Local school just getting started: Worth the Effort

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FToA4gh6Ths&feature=youtu.beThis school recently opened not far from where I live. I attended one of their ‘Free Friday’ classes and both learned a lot and enjoyed myself. The teacher has lots of enthusiasm and knowledge; and since he was a school teacher, he knows how to teach. The environment is extra friendly and the equipment first rate. A lot of thought went into setting this place up, and they did all the work themselves.I was there when th...
