Lie-Nielsen Hand Tool Event - Indy

Lie-Nielsen Hand Tool Event - Indy

10-19-2009 02:55 AM by Walnut_Weasel | 6 comments »

This Saturday (10/17/09) I attended the Lie-Nielsen Hand Tool Event in Indianapolis at the Herron School of Art. I think it is worth mentioning right off the bat is that I am extremely new to woodworking and that alone may bias my opinions stated below. I had two main reason for attending this event: 1) Learn as much as possible about everything available, and 2) Get my hands on some Lie-Nielsen equipment to see what it is like to use high quality tools. Admission to the event was free! I...

A box making vacation in England

A box making vacation in England

For the aspiring cellist to spend three days with Yo-Yo Ma would be something special, certainly. For an aspiring box maker to spend three days one on one with Andrew Crawford is similar. Earlier this month, I had the pleasure to visit Andrew’s shop in Shropshire, England, and had such a great experience others might like to hear about it. Andrew builds what I consider “traditional” boxes. I confess to a clear preference for boxes that look like boxes. Many types of containers fall into...

Festool Cabinet Construction-Lebanon, IN

Festool Cabinet Construction-Lebanon, IN

I recently attended the Festool Cabinet Construction training in Lebanon, IN. It was fantastic! We weren’t given a sales pitch on all the tools they make and sell, but were genuinely guided and coached on how to make frame and frameless cabinets using all Festool equipment. Ive never been in a shop that didn’t have a table saw or jointer or floor planer. Didn’t need it. Unbelievable. I own almost all the Festool stuff and have for about 5 years now and learned how to get mor...

Finishing A to Z: Beyond the Books

Finishing A to Z: Beyond the Books

Finishing A to Z: Beyond the Books – So how useful is the set of DVD’s going to be? “Very much I hope” My finishing skills leave a lot to be desired – A REAL LOT so much in fact that if you see most of my projects on LJ they are all hand applied and natural finishes with no stains or dyes. The price of this DVD set was about $120.00. The first one bought was got and watched was not impressive it was very limited in content and Charles and Bob spent too much time just talking with...

Fundamentals Everyone Can Learn From

Fundamentals Everyone Can Learn From

I took a trip up to Chester County, PA this weekend to take a class with Chuck Bender’s school, The Acanthus Workshop. Chuck goes by the handle Acanthuscarver here on LJ. What a treat! I have been woodworking now for 7 years and hardly do I think of myself as an expert, but I admit to being a little dubious as to how much I would get out of a fundamentals I class. Because the focus was on hand tools, I was more optimistic because I am pretty new to the way of the Schwarz having R...

A good time is had by all

A good time is had by all

I worked the WIA show this past weekend in Pasadena, Ca. showing the Earlex tools in a booth and also running a seminar titled “HVLP Spray finishing made simple” which was well attended by many of my woodworking friends, customers and newbies trying to figure things out. Overall the show was a success, the woodworking TV stars and authors had great attendance in the building next door to the trade show area. It would have been nice if everything could have been in the same buildin...

Woodworking Essentials

Woodworking Essentials

A while back, I attended Lonnie Bird’s Woodworking Essentials Course – I would have to give it a 5 star rating. What a wonderful week! I met some great woodworkers and classmates, shared woodworking stories, and received very professional instruction from Lonnie himself, one of the Master Woodworker’s of our time. We would arrive each day and at our individual workstations, we would find all of the raw materials that would be used during the day. These raw materials were...

Furniture Building & Lutherie Classes

Furniture Building & Lutherie Classes

I stumbled onto Ted’s studio while looking for woodworking classes here in Louisville and have been immensely satisfied with everything I’ve done in the classes. I have taken a class or two at Woodcraft and they were good but there was just something missing for me. After sending an email and visiting the shop I signed up for a relatively intro level class making a shaker style coffee table. The course was in 3 hour sessions and lasted roughly 2 months, meeting once a week. ...
