I picked up the Stihl MS 180 from a small shop called Straub’s near Haubstadt, Indiana for a little less than $200.00. I had never used a Stihl and bought it based upon the recommendation of my coworker who has a penchant for discriminating taste in tools. I bought it for small chores of cleanup and light firewood cutting. The chainsaw is lightweight, powerful, and comfortable to use. It does bog down when sawing anything larger than 12” diameter logs, but the bar is only 14”...

I’ve been an owner of a Stihl 16” chainsaw for years. I have 50 acres that has substantial amount of Blackjack Oaks. These trees typically stay until 14” in diameter at the base, so the 16” bar has always been more than enough. A couple of years ago, my wife treated me to a new Stihl Pruner. I purchased one of these at a local hardware store for trimming limbs in my yard and doing rough cut of logs for the rustic furniture I build. It does have plenty of power and minimizes weight. I actually used it to cut down an entire (dead) 15ft apple tree in my yard. The apple wood is drying in my “bone yard”. The chain tension will not hold for more than a few minutes.
