Glad I Bought This Sanding Detailer

Glad I Bought This Sanding Detailer

02-04-2014 01:47 AM by Pie | 3 comments »

The Sanding Detailer is ideal for finishing those hard to reach areas. The abrasive belt can be indexed. The Sanding Detailer is spring loaded to put tension on the abrasive belt. After the abrasive belt is used up, simply compress the tool and replace the abrasive belt with a fresh one. They are color coded for easy identification of grit. So my wife and I walk into the local WoodCraft store for some scroll saw blades.Since I scrol saw and was looking for some small sanding files. Hea...

Outstanding chest hinges from Nathan's Forge

Outstanding chest hinges from Nathan's Forge

02-02-2014 12:52 AM by mpmitche | 3 comments »

I recently completed a six board chest and needed a nice set of hinges. Being disappointed with what I could find at the local retail outlets I looked around the internet and was pleased to find Nathan’s Forge. He customized the hinges to fit the 5/4 boards I used, delivered them quickly, and provide great looking matching screws for mounting. He even included a complete set of two lengths of screws. The detail of the hinges is great with the top edges chamfered nicely. The pair ma...

Comparing two Woodstock Paddle Switches

Comparing two Woodstock Paddle Switches

01-25-2014 09:05 PM by CharlesA | 23 comments »

I saw these two paddle switches on a LJ thread and decided to replace the original switch on my Craftsman 113 contractor table saw. I ended up with both of them, so I can review both a bit on features and installation. I can’t say too much yet about long-term performance. The Woodstock D4160 is the same as the Grizzly H8241 and is for 110v only up to 16 amps. The Woodstock D4151 is the same as the Grizzly H8243 and can be used with 110 and 220 and can be used up to 35 amps on 110,...

Rust Preventive

Rust Preventive

01-17-2014 04:21 PM by OSU55 | 1 comment »

In my research for rust preventives for tools and firearms I came across a product called Alox, originally developed many years ago for naval ship applications. It is widely used in commercial/industrial applications but is not readily available to the consumer except as this product, Liquid Alox by Lee Precision, manufacturer of reloading equipment. Lee sells this for a lubricating coating for cast lead bullets, but it is the same calcium soap based alox used as a rust preventive. It is avai...

Inexpensive way to save a lot of time.

Inexpensive way to save a lot of time.

I have to share my shop space with two cars in the winter. All that humidity from melting snow wreaks havoc on the cast iron table saw top and drill press table and post. I set out to find a good way to seal/protect the exposed steel so that come spring, I did not have to spend a day preparing surfaces for woodworking. I came across SLIPIT and after reading some reviews, decided to give it shot. One of the great things about this product is that it not only seals the surface, but makes th...

Evapo-Rust this stuff really works!

Evapo-Rust this stuff really works!

I’m rebuilding a 1952 12”-14” Delta radial arm saw which turned out to be more rusted than I thought. I had read recently about this Evapo-Rust product and decided to give it a try and wow it really works quite well. Here’s some before and after pics. I thought I was going to have to chuck this in my lathe and have at it with sandpaper, instead I just soaked it overnight in Evapo-Rust and rinsed with Simple Green under the faucet, effortless! HereR...

Veritas 1:6 Dovetail Saw Guide Model 05T02.01

Veritas 1:6 Dovetail Saw Guide Model 05T02.01

I got this wonderful little guide for Christmas and just now had my first opportunity to try it out. It took me a couple of minutes to wrap my head around how it works, but once I did, I was pretty impressed. You set the clamp in one set of grooves for the tails, and then slide it off and set it into a second set of grooves for the pins. I say set of grooves, but that’s somewhat misleading. There are three grooves in all, but the center groove serves double duty and is used in both orie...

procom ventless garage heater

procom ventless garage heater

01-02-2014 02:16 AM by Nowa | 21 comments »

It is 10 below zero here in Minneapolis. With this little procom ventless heater, it is 72 degrees in my garage. http://www.usaprocom.com/product_category.php?choice=1&sid=1&prod=21 I am extremely pleased with the purchase. It mounts to the wall with 2 screws and takes a natural gas line that our hvac technician was able to run up from the basement and hook up in 35 minutes. Since there is no external vent, I did not have to run a stack out through the roof. The results sp...

Great hinge for cedar chest

Great hinge for cedar chest

12-27-2013 09:28 PM by CharlesA | 2 comments »

I forgot to take a photo of this hinge installed in a cedar chest before I gave it to it’s intended recipient. This is a stock photo. This is a well engineered solution when you want a hinge that will hold the lid open and you want a soft close. It comes with directions for a 70 and 105 degree openings, but you can adjust for other size openings with trial and error or good math skills. I followed advice from the forum and used a piano hinge coupled with two of these. I had trim a...
