New Dowel Jig

New Dowel Jig

163 days ago by trasner | 22 comments »

I have been doing a lot of pocket hole joinery because I usually build shop furniture, jigs, etc. However, I wanted to make some things that did not have visible screw holes. I have a biscuit joiner but do not feel that would get the job done. That leaves dowels or m&t joints. I realize that most authorities say that m&t will provide the strongest joint with dowels a close second. However, for my uses, If the joint fails because over 500lbs of pressure was placed on it, my concern wi...

DeWalt finally hears a who...torx conversion

DeWalt finally hears a who...torx conversion

The DeWalt 735 regularly gets positive reviews… This is sort of an addendum. I have championed this tool often, and Those who have kept up know I have a bias towards it. x y I run three of them now, and years of experience with the ins and outs of this loud but compact beast. The one knock this tool gets is the many complaints about the bolts stripping. While I have never done this, I will admit to feeling many times that it was _about to happen. And size of the factory key didn̵...

Pocket Hole screws By Hillman sold at Lowes

Pocket Hole screws By Hillman sold at Lowes

I notice last time I was at Lowes that they started carrying Pocket hole screws by Hillman. Ialso notice that they did not carry the pan head style. It was my understanding that you need pan head if you wanted to cover the screw with a plug. Everytime I use the washer head it sticks up out of the hole. Am i correct?

Workshop heating

Workshop heating

173 days ago by BoxBuilder | 23 comments »

When we built our home about 18 years ago I had a workshop added in rear of 2 car garage. 340 sq. ft. with 10 foot ceiling. Spent a long time looking for a good heat source. Tried kerosene heater but hated the odor. Saw an ad for the Envi heater (see eheat.com) & ordered 2 with thermostats. About $280 for the 2. Easy install – 2 screws, hang them & plug in. They claim each will cost about 4 cents an hour. Weather here has been mid 30”s for past month. Took about a week ti...

Benchcrafted Split Top Roubo Bench Makers Package

Benchcrafted Split Top Roubo Bench Makers Package

176 days ago by jasondain | 3 comments »

I’ve been working on a bench made from Fine Woodworking’s website for a couple of years now (link) and it has served me well. I wasn’t really planning on building a workbench but when I saw the Benchcrafted stuff I immediately knew I wanted to build one of these and have it forever to work on and pass on to the next generation. The timing didn’t work out for the guild build on the Wood Whisperer site but I ended up ordering one over the summer, about mid-july. It ...

Chain Leg Vise for Roubo style benches

Chain Leg Vise for Roubo style benches

219 days ago by briant | 6 comments »

My Roubo Bench was finished back in 2010 and It’s been a dream to use with one exception, the Parallel Guide and Pin on the leg vise were a pain to use. I never seemed to have the pin in the right hole of the Parallel Guide. BenchCrafted, who made the hardware for the Roubo Slit Top Bench announced a solution for that problem. It’s called a Crisscross and looked promising, except to install it required way more modification and changes to the bench than would make it at all practi...

They do a great job helping you with the plans.

They do a great job helping you with the plans.

I thought i would try out selling plans on http://www.sawtoothideas.com/ by submitting a simple plan. i got many emails from them helping me perfect the plan. I haven’t sold anything because the project itself wouldn’t be that popular, also they’re just starting out and need time to grow. If you want to sell plans for extra woodworking-cash, i think that this is a great way.

Bessey 5" Multipurpose Vise

Bessey 5" Multipurpose Vise

Recently I bought a vise for my workshop and I knew I wanted big one!!! I found the Bessey 5” multipurpose vise at Lowes. It is very well made. For me it will do just about everything that I need it to. I have read other reviews saying that they managed to snap the vise in half! How do you do that? It is a vise. I mean what were you holding in it? A 429 Boss engine, you shouldn’t be holding engines in, now I don’t know what they were doing but still. There is a little big...

Bell Forest Products

Bell Forest Products

229 days ago by Woodbum | 5 comments »

I recently made my first on-line lumber purchase. I chose Bell Forest Products because they are a sponsor of The Woodwhisperers Guild and I had heard good things about them through Marc’s site. I ordered a 20 bf lumber pack of African Mahogany, two additional “pick your own” AM boards and some Ebony turning squares. First let me say that I normally like to buy locally whenever I can, but my local supplier’s inventory was very sparse, and a little pricey. I received...

Amazing Product, Impressive Customer Service!

Amazing Product, Impressive Customer Service!

243 days ago by Alek | 11 comments »

I am a very creative person by nature. I always want to customize and change things to fit my individual personality. I made a shed for behind my house and wanted to dye the wood, as I wanted the shed to match my car! I was referred to Keda Dyes by my friend who ordered from them to make a custom fuchsia tree house for her daughter. First of all, let me tell you that I loved the fact that their dye powders are environmentally safe! Everyone is going green, and doing their part to save our ...
