Better Gloves for Finishing

Better Gloves for Finishing

03-10-2014 11:50 PM by CharlesA | 16 comments »

I use Nitrile gloves for finishing. My day job involves pressed shirts, silk ties, and shiny shoes—showing up with remnants of stain and polyurethane on the hands doesn’t quite work. I usually just buy some from the drug store. The only think I don’t like about the bottom of the barrel gloves is how fragile they are. It is really easy to catch them on something and next thing I know I’m wearing a shredded glove that only covers three fingers. Last week I dropp...

Wonderbar, where have you been all my life?!?

A few weeks ago a co-worker and I were talking about axes and he sent me a video on YouTube called An Axe to Grind, its a documentary by the Adirondack Woodsman all about axes – care, maintenance, hanging, etc. It’s an hour long and I watched about half of it the first time, its very informative and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn the basics about axes. Anyway, about 4 minutes in he starts cleaning his axe and something caught my eye, he has these things called...

Veritas Large Spokeshave Kit

Veritas Large Spokeshave Kit

03-03-2014 05:24 AM by Lumberpunk | 3 comments »

I bought this kits a few months ago and didn’t get time to make the body until recently. As usual with Veritas products I found the packaging to be minimal, which I like. All the parts felt well made right away and the blade was already very flat and sharp, a few minutes on the worksharp brought it up to a nice mirror finish. The instructions are detailed and clear and have a good tool and materials list at the beginning as well as warning you when any operation is crucial to be p...

Inexpensive great task light

Inexpensive great task light

02-28-2014 02:11 AM by EBpenguy | 7 comments »

I went to the recent Woodworking Show in Somerset, NJ and saw a really nice, goose necked LED task light at one of the booths. It was pretty slick, but almost $70 to buy. I had already overspent my budget and was not happy to pass on this! I told one of my woodturning buddies about it and he suggested I look instead at a similar light he had used from IKEA for $9.99. And I am glad I listened to him. IKEA sells this as the Jansjo desk lamp number 201.696.58 in black. It also comes in white...

Amazing way to get rid of rust

Amazing way to get rid of rust

I have become the proud owner of a new Rockwell Bandsaw that used to be owned by my father-in law. He passed a few years back and the family refused to touch his workshop for a number of years. But time has come to take on the task, however, the years have not been kind to all that idle metal. Moisture and a slow water leak all combined to raise big trouble with the bandsaw table, as well as some of the other parts of the saw. I wanted to do everything I could to get it back to the same condi...

I purchased this Rockler Bench Cookie set as an impulse buy about a year ago. This purchase has proven to be my best impulse buy to date. Everyone in my family loves using the bench cookies, including the wifey and my 2 year old daughter who keeps trying to steal them, so she can do curls. I’m going to split my review into the 4 components. What I will say, is that while the set is awesome, if you find you only want the cookies and/or the cones (like me), you may be better off buying...

Self Centering Drill Bits - Installing Kreg tracks for clamping, jigs

Self Centering Drill Bits - Installing Kreg tracks for clamping, jigs

02-07-2014 08:24 PM by darthford | 11 comments »

So I needed to install 5 of these Kreg tracks in my new RAS table, 5×6 screws each for a total of 30 screws. The screws need to be centered and flush (not sticking up half crooked) so you can slide the clamp bolts in the track. There’s little to no room for error. I was still contemplating how to at least center punch them when I was wandering the hardware store and spied these Isomax self centering hinge drill bits, brilliant! Do they do exactly what they advertise, yep! It mad...
