Another Harbor Freight Gem

I picked this hoist up today to install my new Grizzly G0572 Air Filter (see my other review). This little dandy made it a piece of cake to install my air filter by myself. What was really nice about it is the overalllength when fully raised. It what short enough to get the air filter up to the ceiling. My regular chain fall was way to long. With the 20% coupon I paid about $35. If you are going to hang anything like a air filter pick one up and save your back.

Mortise and Tenon Jig

Mortise and Tenon Jig

10-05-2015 01:10 AM by John Little | 3 comments »

I know this item has been around for some time but I could not find an LJ review of it so here goes. I recently purchased a Leigh Super FMT Mortise and Tenon Jig to use on an upcoming project building a stand up desk requiring a number of mortise and tenon joints. The Super FMT is the cheaper of the two FMT jigs Leigh makes but it works in exactly the same manner as the $1,000+ unit for about half the cost. It is still pricey but it does a fantastic job. The unit uses guides that are sized...

New Shop Lights

New Shop Lights

My shop is a 2 car garage (2 cars….must be fiats) and there is only (1) window and (2) over head single light sockets. It gets pretty dark in there now once the sun goes down. I have been planning on putting up 3 banks of 4’ fluorescent lights and running them to switches on the wall. I was researching here and various forums for advice on proper lighting and used recommended formulas. Those calculations were telling me I needed about 9-12 fixtures. That seemed like overkill. ...

Nova G3 lathe chuck

Nova G3 lathe chuck

I recently bought a Nova G3 chuck for my midi lathe. I am very impressed with the quality of this product. I did a YouTube video of the unboxing, assembly, impressions, and use of it. If you would like to view the video it is available at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abTBxQit8OY I hope you enjoy the video. This is the first chuck I have bought and am glad I chose the Nova. I also bought the optional pen jaws. Even with the one minor problem I mention in the v...

No bugs in my shop

No bugs in my shop

I installed two of the Feit two tube LED shop lights in my garage shop and they are much better than a comparable fluorescent light fixture. These shop lights are not described on the Feit Web site which makes me believe that these are Costco specials. These lights come on instantly and are much brighter than my two 150 watt fluorescent lamps. Obviously there is no hum. These are cool white and no UV content so bugs will not be attracted which is important in a garage shop! The only thi...

Low Budget Quarter Sawn Out Of Construction Lumber At The Box Store

Low Budget Quarter Sawn Out Of Construction Lumber At The Box Store

After completing my recent coffee table, I posted it and mentioned that being picky in the big box store is very worth while. The 2 in. x 12 in. x 12 ft. Premium #2 & Better Douglas Fir Lumber is a great section to look through. With very little effort you can pull out a piece that is pretty straight. Nothing you couldn’t cut into smaller pieces and eliminate most of the cup, bow or warping with a little milling. It is pretty wet as described on the website (19%ish) but you ca...

Great Rust remover for only $5

Great Rust remover for only $5

I finally bought my first jointer at an auction. The top had some bad surface rust. Bought this stuff at HD, poured it on and watched the rust disappear. I did two coats and hardly had to scrub. One bottle did the 76 inch table and the fence. Make sure you are in a well ventilated area. Also I paid $10.00 for the Delta DJ-20 jointer. And…....Go

20V MAX* Lithium Ion Compact Drill/Driver Kit

20V MAX* Lithium Ion Compact Drill/Driver Kit

This was one of my wife’s impulse buys. I have stayed clear of battery powered drills, not because I haven’t had them, I have. I have one at work and I use it as much as I use a power drill at home (not drill press) – very little. Since I use it so rarely, I have to charge it before I can use it. I have 2 Milwaukee corded drills at home which I like a lot – One impact and the other is not. I was putting in a wall up on Saturday (covering an exposed cinder block ...
