Easy Mortises, Dowels, and More.

Easy Mortises, Dowels, and More.

1722 days ago by Thomas | 11 comments »

So I’ve used the router/table saw combination of doing mortise and tenon joinery, but for a kitchen island/table build I was looking at 32 mortises to cut on the six legs of the piece, plus 222 dowel holes for the slotted shelving and cross braces. Given the design, everything had to be very precise, so my setups had to be highly repeatable. I looked into mortise machines, and as much as I wanted that Powermatic, I had a hard time justifying the $400 (with accessories) price tag for ...

Simple and Inexpensive

Simple and Inexpensive

I’ve been looking at getting a Kreg pocket hole jig for a while now, with it basically being a toss up between the R3 Jr. and the extremely simple mini jig kit. I wasn’t really looking at the K4 or higher systems, since they go up in price pretty quickly, and as always I’m working on a budget. In addition, I always planned to get the face clamps, so the extra clamping capabilities of the more expensive systems seemed unnecessary for my level of work. I bought the small fac...

Five stars for blatent theft

Had to stop a Lowes yesterday and wandered into the tool dept. to see whats new. And for once there is something !!! Found a 6” planer painted delta gray with delta blue knobs and the peell and stick delta label marked down for close out. Noticed that it was apparently the only one in stock, but on the shelf below they were a stacked some new porter-cable 6” planer with nice color labels on the boxes. They were porter cable gray with black knobs and peel and stick porter cable la...

Woodworking Show Costa Mesa Ca.

Woodworking Show Costa Mesa Ca.

Well the Woodworking Show in Costa Mesa was nice! Ken and Pat, nice to meet you both! There was some great demonstrations and mini classes. I ended up spending four hundred w/o blinking an eye. My wife laughed when we got home and put all the stuff on the floor saying it’s like X-mas. Most impressive thing at the show was Sommerfelds Tools, Wow is all I can say. Their router kits and jigs are some of the most well thought out items I have every witnessed in use. I will be buying thei...

Cutting Mat

Cutting Mat

I originally bought this mat for my mother-in-law who used it for her sewing. My wife also used one for her picture mat cutting. They work well with the rotary cutters and mat cutter. I find it extremely useful for woodworking when laying out projects, doing dry fits and glue ups, etc. I would think it might come in handy for veneer work and other projects where you might want a larger protected surface that won’t mar the finished product. It is hard enough to stay flat and smoot...

Digital Protractor

Digital Protractor

I bought this protractor over the weekend when I went to Lee Valley in Halifax, NS. I paid $14.90 for it which isn’t a lot considering it is very helpful, if you need to find a angle, check an angle on a table saw, etc this is a great asset to have around the shop. It has a locking knob that locks the angle in place however this tends to throw it off a fraction of a degree, other than that it is working out great, I will just have to see how it stands up to the test of time.

Medium Density Overlay (MDO) Plywood for Jig Building and General Use

Medium Density Overlay (MDO) Plywood for Jig Building and General Use

As an alternative to the less than ideal MDF, a cabinetmaker friend of mine recently turned me onto “MDO”, aka “Signboard”. It is made up of phenolic resin coated paper laminated between layers of ply (11 layers of wood in 3/4”) and twice again as many of the phenolic- resin impregnated paper. Its what roadsigns are made of, its waterproof, flat , flat, flat and did I mention waterproof? You wont find it in Home Depot or Lowes, I have looked. I have had success at many of the local lumbery...

comparison with Rockwell

The task was to lower a bar stool 2 1/4”.And not have the usual problem with not level legs when we got done. We also had a Fein Multimaster and the new Porter Cable SoniCrafter To ensure the same length was cut off each leg we cut a piece of PVC to 2 1/4”.The Fein and the PC each had a couple of blades that could be used but we took the round serrated blades as they were the same thickness. We just ran the blades around the leg resting them on the PVC. That gave us a uniform...
