Workshop Heating Solution

Workshop Heating Solution

Winters get pretty cold where I live (Wisconsin) and my garage/shop, though it is attached to the house, could get pretty uncomfortable in winter time. Since I am not about to quit doing what I love for 4 or 5 months a year, I started looking into my options for heating the garage. Space is at a real premium down there, so whatever I chose had to be hung from the ceiling. There was already a 240-volt, unused service in the workshop, so electric heat was the way to go. I selected the Fah...

Harbor frieght multi function tool

Let me start by saying I bought this tool based on a review on Lumberjocks, and even though I am rating it 3 stars overall, that is only because fractions of stars are not allowed. (I would rate it 3.95 stars.) I purchased this tool mostly out of a totally new medical condition found in woodworkers around the globe: IsawaninfomercialforthefeinmodelbutcantafforditbuthismightworksoreallywanttotryitandseeifsomethinglikethisisusefulsoIcanjustifyspendingthemoneyforthefeintothewifeitis I used...

first rate wall-mounted pencil sharpener

first rate wall-mounted pencil sharpener

01-06-2010 07:43 PM by KDL | 14 comments »

Yeah, I know, it’s a pencil sharpener. But it’s a really good one like I remember from elementary school. I don’t have much luck with little plastic hand-held pencil sharpeners, and the Boston brand desktop sharpener in my office doesn’t give me a good, sharp point. So I bought a new sharpener for my shop. I bought it at an office supply store, I think it was Office Depot. I had a choice of a couple generic and in-store brand sharpeners, plus this X-ACTO. The...

Excellent Rubber Glove

Excellent Rubber Glove

Not your typical review and I know that a lot of other people use Nitrile gloves in the shop. I use the Advanced Tool Design Model ATD-6999 X-Large Blue Powder-Free, Fully Textured Nitrile Gloves, 100/box that I get from Amazon for about $9.00. What I like most about the gloves is the fit. I like that they are “roomy” without being loose and are very sturdy. I snag the gloves on lots of little bits here and there a lot and they seldom tear. I use them for finishing and in th...

POS Stapler

POS Stapler

12-28-2009 10:39 PM by lew | 19 comments »

About a year ago, I purchased the Stanley TRE550 Electric Stapler. I know it wasn’t the most expensive stapler on the market and I didn’t expect it to be the “end all” of electric staplers. I used it once to make the child’s rocker which probably required driving 150 1/4” staples into oak. It didn’t have great power but then, I didn’t expect it to be a muscle machine and I could live with tapping in the unset staples. Now picture this, I am ...

Scissor Table

Scissor Table

12-28-2009 12:36 AM by ND2ELK | 24 comments »

This is a H-1485 U-Line standard Scissor Table. The table is 18 X 27 and has a 330 pound weight limit. They have bigger units that hold more weight. Because my shop is so small I had to figure out a way to store my sanders but be able to get them out when needed. When I saw this scissor table, I knew it would do the trick. I built the platforms out of 2 X 12’s for the legs and 3/4” fir plywood for the tops, all trimmed in 4/4 oak. I gave the platforms two coats of Watco Oil. I can...

Sweet little tool

This is one of those tools that you buy for specific uses, so naturally I hemmed and haw for a while before purchasing. Over the last few months I have experienced using the Fein tool from time to time on different job sites. Once you use this type of tool you under stand the convenience, instead of breaking out you Japanese saw. I’m not one for long winded review, but I will say this Bosch always makes a quality tool and the quality, power and easy of use are on point with the Fein plus it...

Shark Pro CNC Router

Shark Pro CNC Router

12-11-2009 09:42 PM by Mike Pientka | 9 comments »

When the Shark was initially released, I traveled 70 miles to the nearest Rockler store to scrutinize it. I had to put my Engineer’s cap on to keep remembering there are continual tradeoffs between cost and performance; from all the homework I did I knew what specs were important and where I could give. At first I was apprehensive the polymer frame would flex too much. or the rod & linear bearing construction with a central drive screw would bind. Both of these turned out to be no...
