Low Cost Edge Banding that Works

Low Cost Edge Banding that Works

06-30-2010 04:38 AM by jayman7 | 5 comments »

First, let me say that I have never applied an iron-on edge banding before. This was for making a series of drawer fronts using red oak plywood. I’ve done solid wood edges in the past, but not using a pre-glued veneer. I initially wanted to try the edge banding available at the typical woodworking stores, but it worked out to be about $0.66 / linear foot. I saw the Band-It edge banding at the big box stores for only $0.26 / linear foot so I had to give it a try. I applied it with...

Kreg Deck Jig Hidden Fastener System

Kreg Deck Jig Hidden Fastener System

06-28-2010 04:36 PM by knothead | 7 comments »

I was very excited to get the Kreg Deck Jig this summer as I am replacing the deck at my home. The new deck is a 10’ X 16’ floating deck, framed in the usual manner with PT lumber for the structure and Western Red Cedar (5/4×6) decking and trim. I have a most favorable opinion of Kreg tools generally, however in the Deck Jig they might have missed the mark just a little bit. I have a few observations….... 1. The jig is formed of the familiar blue plastic, but I fi...

A picture is worth two hudred fifty words

I almost ordered some of these today, but didn’t when I saw they wanted to charge thirteen bucks for shipping two of them. Later, going through my jig supplies, there they were. These things are small. Very small. So small, they wouldn’t break the one ounce mailing barrier. Still, it would have cost thirteen dollars to ship them. Did I mention that yet? To be fair, they are very handy critters to have around, since they do their assigned task well, which is to fit in T tracks...

Sun Brand Random Orbital Discs

Sun Brand Random Orbital Discs

06-04-2010 06:15 AM by tooldad | 5 comments »

Bought these at the wood show. We have gone through 6 boxes of them. However I didn’t count how many times a disc went flying. The velcro/hook and loop on the back doesn’t seem to stick that well. It’s not that the pad was worn out, one of the sanders we tried them on was new. For the most part they work, but you get what you pay for.

These hold down cost the exorbitant price of $1.97 each!!!!! I read about other “famous” brand hold downs which break the first time you use them. These did not break after about ten tries and they in fact hold , as they are supposed to do . Excellent value. One more time, thank you Harbor Freight,my very favorite store.( just for Greg: this is a full review with pictures not from Harbor Freight ’s website but in fact taken on my new bench)The Harbor Freight guy

Easy Lift System for the DeWalt DW788

Easy Lift System for the DeWalt DW788

05-23-2010 04:13 AM by cmckerliesr | 4 comments »

I recently purchased the Easy Lift System for the DeWalt DW788 Scrollsaw from wildwooddesigns.com. The Easy Lift System that will hold the upper arm in an open position making it easier to change blades or thread a blade through a work piece. The design is very simple and you get all the hardware needed to install the lift system. I do have a slight problem with the instructions, but part of that comes from being a technical writer. If you read the instructions and follow them word for wor...

One solution for making dowels

One solution for making dowels

05-21-2010 11:01 PM by mole | 4 comments »

I was looking for some solutions to make my own dowels so I can use them in some joineries and wood threading task. So far, some of the solutions that I found are.. wood turning, rotary plane (commercial or hand made). dowel/tenon cutters. I have tried a simple wood turning method (using electric power drill) which result in acceptable dowels (may be it will be perfect if I have a real (metal?) lathe. Anyway, using turning method, it takes quite some time for me, so here comes the Veritas d...

Very surprising precision in this straightedge

Very surprising precision in this straightedge

05-16-2010 05:17 AM by Twigger | 1 comment »

I bought this before I started woodworking to do carpentry like circular sawing the full length of a piece of plywood. So when I bought a jointer, I wanted to use it to check for coplanar. But of course the precision of this inexpensive straightedge found at a big box store was very questionable. But using the technique found at http://lumberjocks.com/topics/16233I checked it out. In particular, I scribed a line using a knife blade, flipped it, and scribed a second line hoping to match ...
