Harbor Freight Air Saw

Harbor Freight Air Saw

12-23-2010 10:24 PM by Raymond | 35 comments »

I recently purchased this air saw from Harbor Freight. It has worked well right out of the box. It is quiet with almost no vibration. Blades are a little expensive and are not a standard blade. Although I am working on a fix for that. At 17.99 I could not go wrong. I use if for both wood and metal work. From Harbor Freight Specs Cut a wide range of materials, trim and shape light plate, sheet metal and plastics.Zip through sheet metal as thick as 16 gaugeAir consumption: 3 CFM @ 90 PSI...

Bed Hardware

Bed Hardware

12-22-2010 12:42 AM by Tadd | 12 comments »

While building a bed for my wife, I struggled with how to connect the bed rails to the headboard and the footboard. I stumbled on this new product from Rockler. The connection hardware uses a threaded insert that is screwed into the headboard and footboard. A mating bolt is then screwed into the insert. You have to drill a hole through the rail to another hole drilled perpendicullarly into the rail. A nut and a curved washer tighten the rail to the headboard or footboard. The hardwa...

I made the mistake of not looking closely enough at an old Stanley 39 plough plane. The title said “Plane” and “wood cutter”. It looked just another old well used plane that would need bit of cleaning up but would make a user. A lot of finish still on it and a little rust. I had seen a lot of them selling for $25-40. The seller had 100% positive feed back, so I didn’t spend a lot of time studying the pictures looking for a scam or what they were trying to pull over on someone. The blad...

I picked this up from Amazon.com. It was very easy to install using 8 bolts that screw in to predrilled holes in the sides of the planer, total install time was about five minutes. The table on the DW735 is so small, it’s difficult to get the workpiece positioned exactly flat to take a reading on the material removal gauge if you don’t have some sort of infeed table, especially if you’re planing a long board. With these addon tables, that problem is entirely eliminated fo...

Drill Bits & Plug Cutters.

Drill Bits & Plug Cutters.

I had purchased these bits and cutters a few months ago and now that I have used them for a while I decided to post a review. I have purchased several items in the past from MLCS and so far have not been disappointed. Each set of bits come in a simple little wooden storage box which is a nice touch. So far both sets of bits have performed VERY WELL, and show no signs of wearing. The only drawback and the reason I gave it a 4 stars rating is the box the tapered bits come in. They could of h...

I’ve always called Harbor Freight “God’s gift to men” and since there’s been a bit of hubub about this tool paradise on this site recently I thought I’d post some reviews of my favorite HF Gems… This one I just bought TODAY and I already can see that it is among the best tools in the store! For one thing, this thing is extremely well made! That isn’t always the case at HF… ok… I suppose it is RARELY the case. But if you had this j...

Rare Earth Magnets for 15 cents each!

Rare Earth Magnets for 15 cents each!

Rare earth magnets have unlimited uses in the shop. I’ve seen more plans than I can count using these little things in woodworking magazines, so when I saw them in Harbor Freight today I grabbed a pack. Of course there’s not much to say about them, they work like any other rare earth magnets, hard to pull apart and dangerous to swallow. The difference is that the Harbor Freight ones are a buck and a half for ten of them! They’re 5/16” round, the ideal size for most ...

I purchased these last week when I thought I’d be fastening the tops to the nightstands this weekend. Well I screwed up the tops and now have a few more weeks of work(delayed until after holiday gifts are done). Anyways, I just received these fasteners in the mail yesterday and was all excited….until I read the back of the bags. I can’t remember the exact words since I dont have it in front of me right now but it goes something like this: Warning, materials used in thi...

Like most of you LJs, I too LOVE tools. I especially love the tools that make me look like a professional craftsman. Years back I fell in love with the Kreg Pocket Hole jig due to its simplicity and ease of use. After building a few cabinets with the jig I realized that creating a flush joint was very challenging and sometimes impossible. The difficulty of creating a flush joint is due to the screw causing the mating board to wander when you drive ithe screw into the board; this is despite m...

If your planning on using Rockler’s new “Pro Shelf” template set for professional work don’t even bother to open the box. The set includes registering pins for 5mm and 1/4” pins. However the set does not include the registering pins for the 7/32” holes you need to drill if your using the more professional brass insets and shelf pins. According to the website and the staff with whom I spoke, Rockler does not sell or make the necessary registering pins. Stran...
