Nail Puller gets great reviews but I couldn't make it live up to expectations

I recently got a bunch of reclaimed wood which used to be a boat frame. At either end of most pieces are lots of nails, and I mean LOTS – about 20-30 in each piece. I wanted to try to reclaim all the wood so I looked around for a way to get these nails out, and found many good reviews of the Crescent 56 Nail Puller on Amazon. Nearly all the reviews said that this was the tool to get if you have to pull lots of nails, and described its use. It seems to be a love-it-or-hate-it item ...

Pretty Nice Carving Gouges

Pretty Nice Carving Gouges

10-29-2010 12:23 AM by Eric in Florida. | 4 comments »

I wanted a set of carving gouges , but I couldn’t afford to spend an arm and a leg.I was pretty surprised when these arrived and turned out to be nicer then I thought they would be.Given the price of around $11.00 a gouge, these are nice. They range from 1/4” to 1” and were sharp enough to use right out of the box, but I’ll hone them up real good and give a report a little down the road on how they work out.I gave four stars based on my initial impression, but we’...

General Finishes Gel Stain, a good deal

General Finishes Gel Stain, a good deal

10-24-2010 12:33 AM by Andrew | 6 comments »

I bought some of this because I am refinishing a dresser ( saddly store bought). The dresser has been replaced by one I built. While it sat in my garage, it was noticed by a friend that wanted to relocate it to their home, but they wanted to have it refinished. So I sanded and sanded, then I dyed the unknown Malaysian wood to find out some sections did not take any dye at all, if I hadn’t sanded it myself, I would have thought there was excess glue in those places. So I put on a coa...

Hi, I thought I would post this as there may be some others that have not tried using scrapers. Oh man if I only hand the hours back spent on sanding. My wife been bugging me for a bedroom mirror and since I been buying tools lately I figured that her project better move up on the list. I had some hard maple left over. I ran the frame material through the table saw on an angle to make a cove—-I had done that several times before and it takes alot of sanding and making special b...

Miter gauge and blade purchase

Sunday after a long workweek was over, with a little too much overtime for my taste I was reading Rockler sales paper. I had Monday off and Blondie was working, OH no, so off to Rockler I go. I received a coupon in the mail for 50 % of a 2nd item after purchasing a regular priced item of equal or less value. So I put in the reading glass’s ( New for me never had to before, LOL ) to read their fine print of all the things that were excluded from this coupon. I was happy to read Forres...

Ease of use

Ease of use

I have been needing another method of sharpening other than by hand. I have been using a 3 and 6 inch grinder for shaping, and Arkansas stone’s for fine tuning. For plane blades, a large piece of glass with assorted grits of wet or dry sandpaper. I have made some jigs for the grinders to get somewhat of a hollow bevel started. And have had some reasonable success with the bevel. As long as I was not dealing with 2 inches or larger. But the stones and my inconsistency of sharpening have ...

GREAT MULTI PURPOSE SHOP TOWEL

GREAT MULTI PURPOSE SHOP TOWEL

09-29-2010 09:11 AM by Roz | 15 comments »

I want to tell my fellow LJ’s about the towels I am using in my shop. An ordering mistake at work introduced them to me. I found these towels very good for prepping a surface prior to applying a finishing or painting. These little towels are great for removing dust and debris, getting it all, leaving no residue or fiber behind. One towel will last a very long time and can be reused. I have used them for applying wiping stains and finished with good results. I have used these towels as f...

Last week I purchased a 10 Feet Long 4” clear hose from Rockwell, ( the one on the left) I spent the better part of the afternoon stretching it to fit the standard connections on my jointer, planer, TS and vacuum. Not a big deal. But since it wasn’t long enough to reach across the shop and I needed to order few things online from good ol Harbor Freight as in (Dust Collector Separator Lid) I decided to add one of their 10 feet hoses to the order.Let me tell ya, this thing fits perfect the fi...

Wolfcraft master 200 portable worktableTesting it on a simple tool box build in Paris… Ok The story goes that my fiancé lives in Paris (Caroline – she is French), and a genuine Lumber Jerk needs a place to hammer, even when he is there. So of to the beloved BHV in the center of Paris, they have a Wolfcraft 200 at a price of 50 Euro. And it can be brought home on my unisex bicycle, even I must admit the Paris traffic and a load like this are a little like oil and water. Wolfcraft maste...

Harbor Freight Scissor Lift Table

Harbor Freight Scissor Lift Table

09-15-2010 04:46 AM by jcwalleye | 8 comments »

Tool Review 500 lb capacity hydraulic lift table I struggle lowering cabinets or other heavy items from the workbench down to the floor. It’s often more of a controlled drop than anything else. I thought it was just me, but the topic came up on one of the forums recently. Someone mentioned that they used a scissor lift table from Harbor Freight and several others chimed in saying they used the same thing. It was such a simple solution, I had to get one. A friend picked it up...
