Craftsman Automatic Power Switch

Craftsman Automatic Power Switch

I just purchased this item recently, but it works exactly as described and is a problem solver for me. I searched Lumberjocks to see if there was already a review. I see many references to this product, but no review. I did not know that this product even existed until about a week ago, so maybe my review will make it easier to find for future new Lumber Jocks. I found mine for $24.99 at the local Sears store. I used a $10 off coupon and so actually paid 14.99 plus tax. This grey pl...

Fair priced little branding iron.

Fair priced little branding iron.

This is a UK seller but the price so fair that it might be worth buying even the shipment. And it comes in 220v and with an English power plug (I changed mine to a Danish plug). The burner plate with my Japanese inspired MaFe logo. You will need to make your own artwork and send it to the seller in the right file formats, no premade templates here so if you don’t know how to do this or have some one that can help you this is not the right product. Finally I got my branding iron!Do I need ...

Fantastic lumber mill in Western Massachusetts

Fantastic lumber mill in Western Massachusetts

05-22-2012 04:22 PM by lumberjoe | 38 comments »

As I am new to woodworking, I found the transition from crappy big box lumber to quality hardwoods very intimidating. Buying planed dimensional lumber by the liner foot is a much different experience than buying rough cut lumber by the board foot. While the internet is a great resource for many things, I could not find good information on saw mills close to me. Since this location is about 15 minutes away from me, I figured I would take a chance. 1 – The owner is VERY knowledgeable. ...

Free CAD/CAM Software for the Hobbyist and DIYer

I’ve been a woodworker and computer geek since I was a little kid. Now I have a shop of my own and some disposable income to spend on woodworking. As you may have seen if you follow my woodworking, I like to do CNC woodworking. Even before that I would use 3D CAD software to design my projects so that I would know how to cut my materials. It is definitely worth it to model and assemble your projects virtually before you do it in expensive woods. At any rate, I was looking for aff...

Small Cheap Chinese Laser

Small Cheap Chinese Laser

05-20-2016 08:21 PM by RootandBranch | 9 comments »

Gave this 4 stars since it’s almost exactly what I expected going in. Cheap, small scale and does a decent job so far for what it is. Playing with a laser. What could possibly go wrong? This gizmo is a mini 500mW engraver. Blue and purple beam, proprietary drag and drop software, 2 axis movement with a burn area of about one and a half inches square. It’s small but scaling up in laser capability increases the cost by a bunch. When you get up to Death Star wattage; well then, you ...

Take Better Photos With A Light Tent

Take Better Photos With A Light Tent

This is not exactly a woodworking tool, but may be useful to some people. When taking pictures of the things we make sometimes it is hard to show off the true beauty of a piece because of the resulting photos. I am not an expert on photography, and my pictures are not perfect, but I thought I would share what I do know. One of the things that I did that made the biggest impact on my photos was getting a light tent (some people call them light boxes or photo tents). There are lots of websit...

Mortise Pal - A Great Tool

Mortise Pal - A Great Tool

I’m a big fan of floating tenons. They are clean shouldered, very strong and very quick. So when I got a job for fir doors I wanted to use floating tenons. The problem for me was Getting them deep and wide enough for an exterior door. For most of my floating tenon mortises I use the Festool Domino. But while this a great machine it only cuts a mortise to 1” by 50mm thick. I could have used my hollow chisel mortiser and employed traditional mortise and tenon. This is ...

GREAT MULTI PURPOSE SHOP TOWEL

GREAT MULTI PURPOSE SHOP TOWEL

I want to tell my fellow LJ’s about the towels I am using in my shop. An ordering mistake at work introduced them to me. I found these towels very good for prepping a surface prior to applying a finishing or painting. These little towels are great for removing dust and debris, getting it all, leaving no residue or fiber behind. One towel will last a very long time and can be reused. I have used them for applying wiping stains and finished with good results. I have used these towels as f...

Hardwood Supplier: Forest Products Associates. Greenfield, MA

NOTE:—Photos and Videos at the Bottom... scroll down!— Where I used to live, there was a so called “incredible” hardwood supplier who had a showroom of almost 800 square feet in which to display oak, cherry, poplar, and walnut. Occasionally, they’d get some additional “special” species. Oh, and EVERYTHING was S2S. Boy was I clueless! When I moved to my current town two years ago, I had a heckuva time locating a hardwood dealer. I searched on...

Hammerite Rust Remover Gel - A Product Review

Hammerite Rust Remover Gel - A Product Review

03-24-2011 08:46 PM by Brit | 18 comments »

Recently I posted a restoration story of an old Skinner 6” sweep brace (you can read it here if you missed it) where I used Hammerite Rust Remover Gel. Since people showed a lot of interest in this product, I thought I would do a proper review as I use it to clean the saw plate on a wonderful vintage Spear & Jackson hand saw. You can read all about this gorgeous piece of English heritage here. The gel is available in three sizes: 75ml, 100ml, 225ml and 750ml. I bought the largest size ...
