Fair priced little branding iron.

Fair priced little branding iron.

This is a UK seller but the price so fair that it might be worth buying even the shipment. And it comes in 220v and with an English power plug (I changed mine to a Danish plug). The burner plate with my Japanese inspired MaFe logo. You will need to make your own artwork and send it to the seller in the right file formats, no premade templates here so if you don’t know how to do this or have some one that can help you this is not the right product. Finally I got my branding iron!Do I need ...

Fantastic lumber mill in Western Massachusetts

Fantastic lumber mill in Western Massachusetts

As I am new to woodworking, I found the transition from crappy big box lumber to quality hardwoods very intimidating. Buying planed dimensional lumber by the liner foot is a much different experience than buying rough cut lumber by the board foot. While the internet is a great resource for many things, I could not find good information on saw mills close to me. Since this location is about 15 minutes away from me, I figured I would take a chance. 1 – The owner is VERY knowledgeable. ...

Take Better Photos With A Light Tent

Take Better Photos With A Light Tent

This is not exactly a woodworking tool, but may be useful to some people. When taking pictures of the things we make sometimes it is hard to show off the true beauty of a piece because of the resulting photos. I am not an expert on photography, and my pictures are not perfect, but I thought I would share what I do know. One of the things that I did that made the biggest impact on my photos was getting a light tent (some people call them light boxes or photo tents). There are lots of websit...

Mortise Pal - A Great Tool

Mortise Pal - A Great Tool

1415 days ago by mcase | 8 comments »

I’m a big fan of floating tenons. They are clean shouldered, very strong and very quick. So when I got a job for fir doors I wanted to use floating tenons. The problem for me was Getting them deep and wide enough for an exterior door. For most of my floating tenon mortises I use the Festool Domino. But while this a great machine it only cuts a mortise to 1” by 50mm thick. I could have used my hollow chisel mortiser and employed traditional mortise and tenon. This is ...

GREAT MULTI PURPOSE SHOP TOWEL

GREAT MULTI PURPOSE SHOP TOWEL

I want to tell my fellow LJ’s about the towels I am using in my shop. An ordering mistake at work introduced them to me. I found these towels very good for prepping a surface prior to applying a finishing or painting. These little towels are great for removing dust and debris, getting it all, leaving no residue or fiber behind. One towel will last a very long time and can be reused. I have used them for applying wiping stains and finished with good results. I have used these towels as f...

Hardwood Supplier: Forest Products Associates. Greenfield, MA

Hardwood Supplier: Forest Products Associates. Greenfield, MA

NOTE:—Photos and Videos at the Bottom... scroll down!— Where I used to live, there was a so called “incredible” hardwood supplier who had a showroom of almost 800 square feet in which to display oak, cherry, poplar, and walnut. Occasionally, they’d get some additional “special” species. Oh, and EVERYTHING was S2S. Boy was I clueless! When I moved to my current town two years ago, I had a heckuva time locating a hardwood dealer. I searched on...

Hinging a box project is one of the most troublesome and intimidating parts of box making. But, there is a really easy way. The SmartHinge is the best looking, easiest to install premium brass box hinge available. Emphasis on easy. SmartHinge is the latest entry into the premium box hinge inventory. These hinges are the brainchild of Andrew Crawford and Rolls Royce engineer Clive Jarman. They are solid brass, precision machined “side-rail” style hinges highly polished to a mirror fini...

Great Rust Remover

Great Rust Remover

I have been looking for something to easily remove rust from some hand planes I am restoring. I was contemplating using electrolysis and I came across an article the other day on using The Works Toilet Bowl cleaner, so today I gave it a try. I used it at full strength and put the parts in for 20 minutes and this virtually removed all rust, it doesn’t get any easier than this. Now I need to find a pan largest enough to hold the body of this #5 Stanley. Use in a well ventilated area and w...

The Luthier's Best Friend can help all handymen/women and woodworkers too!

I suggested some time ago that Lee Valley carry luthier’s binding tape, as it has usefulness for many of us on a day to day basis. After some searching they were able to track down a supplier and have offered it for sale on their store. Here’s an example of I use it in the guitar shop: This tape is quite simply indispensable for any woodworker and likely most home’s toolbox. The tape is strong enough to wrap around a joint and not break, while having some elasticit...
