Accept Credit Cards With Square and Your iPhone

Accept Credit Cards With Square and Your iPhone

I’ve seen this advertized today on LumberJocks’ pages. I’ve been using it for 2 months and absolutely love it. If you’ve read my blog “So you want to go pro” I complained about the outrageous costs for accepting credit cards. Square is a new company that has NO monthly fees as all other companies do. This uses a card reader (they supply for free) and your iPhone. Compare my experience below: Old Credit Card Company $56.29 / mo. if used or notAll cards ha...

Chain Leg Vise for Roubo style benches

Chain Leg Vise for Roubo style benches

191 days ago by briant | 6 comments »

My Roubo Bench was finished back in 2010 and It’s been a dream to use with one exception, the Parallel Guide and Pin on the leg vise were a pain to use. I never seemed to have the pin in the right hole of the Parallel Guide. BenchCrafted, who made the hardware for the Roubo Slit Top Bench announced a solution for that problem. It’s called a Crisscross and looked promising, except to install it required way more modification and changes to the bench than would make it at all practi...

Lee Valley Square Hole Punches

Lee Valley Square Hole Punches

559 days ago by vipond33 | 22 comments »

This is a review of the Veritas Square Hole Punch, available individually or as a set of six, ranging in size from 3/16” to 1/2” by sixteenths. These punches are most often used for period work like Greene and Greene style pieces where a raised plug is inserted, or for decorative pierced work (like the ones in my pictures) or for small square mortices. You could also use them as the beginning of much deeper mortises, using the perfect opening created as your guide for further ...

Medium Density Overlay (MDO) Plywood for Jig Building and General Use

Medium Density Overlay (MDO) Plywood for Jig Building and General Use

As an alternative to the less than ideal MDF, a cabinetmaker friend of mine recently turned me onto “MDO”, aka “Signboard”. It is made up of phenolic resin coated paper laminated between layers of ply (11 layers of wood in 3/4”) and twice again as many of the phenolic- resin impregnated paper. Its what roadsigns are made of, its waterproof, flat , flat, flat and did I mention waterproof? You wont find it in Home Depot or Lowes, I have looked. I have had success at many of the local lumbery...

Scissor Table

Scissor Table

1242 days ago by ND2ELK | 24 comments »

This is a H-1485 U-Line standard Scissor Table. The table is 18 X 27 and has a 330 pound weight limit. They have bigger units that hold more weight. Because my shop is so small I had to figure out a way to store my sanders but be able to get them out when needed. When I saw this scissor table, I knew it would do the trick. I built the platforms out of 2 X 12’s for the legs and 3/4” fir plywood for the tops, all trimmed in 4/4 oak. I gave the platforms two coats of Watco Oil. I can...

Help Making Perfect Inlays

Help Making Perfect Inlays

648 days ago by RogerBean | 19 comments »

First thing I noticed when I opened the box, was that this is a quality tool. Machined and anodized aluminum, with the A2 corner chisel itself cleverly held in place with several small magnets. I first had the opportunity to use the prototype for this jig at Andrew’s workshop in Shropshire, England. I was there to learn, and when we got to the topic of inlay, Andrew produced a small flute case with a routed inlay groove pre-cut to use as a demo. He produced the prototype jig and said “...

Isometric Drawing Paper

Isometric Drawing Paper

For all of you pencil, paper, I don’t have time to learn SketchUp, hard heads like me, I found a nice little resource on the web. It’s isometric drawing paper, for hand drawing 3d sketches. You can buy this paper already printed, but I found several sites that let you download and print your own, as you need it. The site athttp://www.customgraph.com/piart.php?art=587 has the best set up that I found, since you can change the perimeters and line colors. Give it a try, for more ...

Ancorayachtservice.com Chain Vise

Ancorayachtservice.com Chain Vise

Chain Vise Kit As I was blogging about my split Roubo bench build using BenchCrafted hardware, Jim (Boatman53) offered me a prototype of his chain drive for the leg vise. This is a chain that goes from the chop, through the front leg and then down to the parallel beam. It is really clever idea that eliminates the need for the parallel pin. I’ve been using the chain vise for several months now and here are my thoughts. Materials: Obviously the kit comes with everything needed. I ju...

Insulfoam Garage Door Insulation Kit

Insulfoam Garage Door Insulation Kit

469 days ago by David Grimes | 8 comments »

My three garage doors were not insulated. Never a problem until last year when I converted bay 3 into the Man Cave wood shop and started spending much time out here. I don’t even remember what the back porch looks like. My dogs miss me terribly. They bark at me before they remember me. I went to the BORG and the BBRG looking for garage door insulation whatever. They had some Owens Corning bag of flimsy, etc. No thanks. I called my garage door supplier/installer to see how much...

Teco Variable Frequency Drive: Model JNEV-203-H1

Teco Variable Frequency Drive: Model JNEV-203-H1

Now that I have been using this VFD for a few weeks I thought it might be time to post a review of it. The sole reason for purchasing this product was to power the 3 phase motor on my Unisaw given that I only have single phase power at my location. I looked at alternatives like a Rotary Phase Converter, a Static Phase Converter or even swapping out the 3 phase motor for a single phase motor but I wanted to experience the full power this motor offered. So, in the end I opted for the VFD and...
