Chinese firewood...I mean plywood!

Chinese firewood...I mean plywood!

585 days ago by Dadoo | 46 comments »

All of my cabinets so far, have been made from birch plywood and trimmed in pine. Now I’ve got a load of old maple for trim and want to build a bookcase system using maple plywood. I’ve looked around and have found that the only place that carries it, is Lowes. Oh, my local yard will be happy to order it…at like $70.00 a sheet…sight unseen. So being careful not to buy some cheap stuff (there’s been some bad vibes concerning Chinese plywood here) I found that the ...

Five stars for blatent theft

Had to stop a Lowes yesterday and wandered into the tool dept. to see whats new. And for once there is something !!! Found a 6” planer painted delta gray with delta blue knobs and the peell and stick delta label marked down for close out. Noticed that it was apparently the only one in stock, but on the shelf below they were a stacked some new porter-cable 6” planer with nice color labels on the boxes. They were porter cable gray with black knobs and peel and stick porter cable la...

Dixon Ticonderoga #2 HB Pencil

Dixon Ticonderoga #2 HB Pencil

Ok…I know your thinking this is a joke…but I assure you , my friends I am serious as a heart attack! Pencils these days are a sad conglomeration of strange MDF like material that feels more like rubber, and breaks easily when you try to sharpen it. Same with the leads…if your lucky enough to get a point on it after grinding down half the “pencil” in the sharpener it will break as soon as you put any pressure on it. Not at the tip…down low under the fake woo...

Medium Density Overlay (MDO) Plywood for Jig Building and General Use

Medium Density Overlay (MDO) Plywood for Jig Building and General Use

45 days ago by Jerry | 27 comments »

As an alternative to the less than ideal MDF, a cabinetmaker friend of mine recently turned me onto “MDO”, aka “Signboard”. It is made up of phenolic resin coated paper laminated between layers of ply (11 layers of wood in 3/4”) and twice again as many of the phenolic- resin impregnated paper. Its what roadsigns are made of, its waterproof, flat , flat, flat and did I mention waterproof? You wont find it in Home Depot or Lowes, I have looked. I have had success at many of the local lumbery...

mail order hardwood lumber

mail order hardwood lumber

This is a wood source review. I was impressed enough with the vendor to want to post. They are knowledgeable and personable. I’m building cabinets and wanted quartersawn/rift cherry for the door rails and stiles. My local supplier doesn’t separate cherry into rift and quartered, so I went to the Internet and found http://www.dunham-hardwoods.com. Marty, the gentleman I dealt with, understood what I wanted, was able to find the material, hit-or-miss plane it, cut it to a shi...

Looking for someplace out of the way to store all your screws/small hardware? Want to keep the dust out? Well, here is a great solution. They are made by a company called Stack-On. Here you will find their website. They come with 12 compartments with a lid that protects the contents keeping the dust out. The lidsslide back in a little to keep them open as you can see in the second picture. They can also snap shut whenclosed. They can either stand alone or be hung on the wall. I at...

Miter trimmer

Miter trimmer

These are great. I don’t know of a name brand one as they all seem pretty generic. If you make picture frames or do a lot of miters, these are invaluable. They allow you to trim off the smallest of shavings at a perfect 45 degrees. You can also set them to do 90 degree cuts. Mine was purchased at Rockler and was made in China. It works great though. Not muchto screw up in manufacturing. I usually just cut my miters close and use this to cut to perfect length.

Great way to have 220 without Electrician

Great way to have 220 without Electrician

122 days ago by reggiek | 22 comments »

I recently needed 220 in my new shop and had not had the chance to wire up the necessary circuits. A friend of mine recommended that I check out this web page and buy one of these units. It uses two 115 sockets to produce the 220 voltage. I tried the unit with my table saw and was pleased to see that the saw acted the same as it had when connected to a dedicated 220 circuit. Since there were two sockets on the adapter I was also able to hook up my 220 planer and run it with the same suc...
