Vega # D-48 Duplicator

This duplicator is the best manual duplicator for the money that I have used. It comes in different lengths and different price ranges. It has a variety of different adjustments. When you buy it, It comes with the aluminum extrusion, the chain, the spoked guide wheel, the blade holder head, the cutter, two center point brackets ( for holding round turnings as a template) and it also comes with 3 different stylus. The cutter head is spring loaded and can be locked if you just want to make a str...

Affordable but top notch turning tool

Affordable but top notch turning tool

I’m a relative newbie to all things turning… and while I haven’t ventured very far out of the pen turning thing yet I know well enough to try and make sure I have the right tools around for the job. As with most folks I grabbed one of the cheapie kits of turning tools when I started and while those work well enough when you keep the sharp I wanted to get a more substantial skew that I could use for other projects and that would hold it’s edge better. I debated on wheth...

Excellent tool for hollowers

Excellent tool for hollowers

08-14-2010 07:23 PM by reggiek | 4 comments »

I bought this tool some time ago, based on a recommendation I received from a good friend that does gallery class production turnings, and have been running it through it’s paces. Now that I have it’s measure, it is time to do a write up. This tool is made in New Zealand – and definitely has excellent engineering and quality control. It arrived in first class condition well packaged and extremely well protected. The instruction book is a bit on the slim side…not...

Upgrade your pen turning

Upgrade your pen turning

There are a number of pen turners like me on LJ. Actually, most are better. But I’ve lately noticed that the edges of my blanks are just not quite good enough. So I searched around and found John Goodiin. http://www.penturnersproducts.com/ John engineers his bushings to a greater tolerance than those we get from Rockler, Woodcraft, PSI, etc. Plus you will be turning between centers and not on a mandrel. That’s going to be the biggest leap in your quality. So if your ski...

Abranet Sanding Mesh

Abranet Sanding Mesh

03-25-2010 09:42 PM by Darell | 5 comments »

I thought I’d try this Abranet Sanding Mesh to sand my pen blanks. Sanding has always been the hated chore of my penmaking. The Abranet Sanding Mesh has made this task much easier. I cut a 1” strip off each of 5 grits and after 15 pens I’m still using the same pieces and they don’t show any signs of wearing out yet. This stuff is much, much easier to use that the old sandpaper strips I had before. I won’t be using the old stuff any more. Wish I’d boug...

I am building tow night stands and I wanted to run the front legs.I never turned wood before in my life.So I went to my favorite harbor Freight store and I bought this lathe which was on sale for $249.00 but as usual the manager who knows me also accepted a 20% discount, my final price was $179.00.In addition I bought a 8 pieces HSS wood tuning tools set, also with 20% discount. As I said this is the very first time that I use a lathe and after watching a few videos on “youtube’ I...

Pink Tool Set for Ladies - Apollo Precision 39-piece

Pink Tool Set for Ladies - Apollo Precision 39-piece

Apollo Precision 39-piece Pink Tool Set I suggest you this awesome tool set. It was really nice to be able to give a tool set to my wife that not only was sturdy and comprehensive but also aesthetically looked great with their shocking pink accents. I’m not allowed to use the pink tools so I’m told (I’m terrible for putting tools back in their proper place) but there’s no way I could confuse them with mine so I don’t think she has to worry! Great bundle...

PSI Drill Centering Pen Vise, cheaply made

PSI Drill Centering Pen Vise, cheaply made

03-11-2010 08:23 AM by tooldad | 11 comments »

Got this vise with a starter kit from PSI. About a 100 pens later it has come apart twice and caused at least 4-6 students to ruin blanks due to moving while drilling. What seems to happen is the ring spring clamp (I’m not sure what it is called) keeps popping off when tightened. It took 4 hands and a ring separator pliers to get it back on, and that is not an exaggeration. I think it would have been okay in my home workshop, but definitely not high output shops. Called customer ...

Artistic pen blanks

Artistic pen blanks

02-14-2010 11:05 PM by Sawdust2 | 3 comments »

Friday I had the opportunity to visit the shop of Constant Laubscher who runs a niche business of creating custom pen blanks. www.lazerlinez.com Constant showed me the process from root ball to finished product. He had one huge root burl that had to have been 4 foot in diameter. After the burl is cut to rough size (1×1 x 6-8) he dries it (them) in a large cabinet about 2×8 x 8. Then they get stabilized in a pressure pot you won’t believe. I could be wrong but I believe that...
