Pink Tool Set for Ladies - Apollo Precision 39-piece

Pink Tool Set for Ladies - Apollo Precision 39-piece

Apollo Precision 39-piece Pink Tool Set I suggest you this awesome tool set. It was really nice to be able to give a tool set to my wife that not only was sturdy and comprehensive but also aesthetically looked great with their shocking pink accents. I’m not allowed to use the pink tools so I’m told (I’m terrible for putting tools back in their proper place) but there’s no way I could confuse them with mine so I don’t think she has to worry! Great bundle...

PSI Drill Centering Pen Vise, cheaply made

PSI Drill Centering Pen Vise, cheaply made

Got this vise with a starter kit from PSI. About a 100 pens later it has come apart twice and caused at least 4-6 students to ruin blanks due to moving while drilling. What seems to happen is the ring spring clamp (I’m not sure what it is called) keeps popping off when tightened. It took 4 hands and a ring separator pliers to get it back on, and that is not an exaggeration. I think it would have been okay in my home workshop, but definitely not high output shops. Called customer ...

Artistic pen blanks

Artistic pen blanks

Friday I had the opportunity to visit the shop of Constant Laubscher who runs a niche business of creating custom pen blanks. www.lazerlinez.com Constant showed me the process from root ball to finished product. He had one huge root burl that had to have been 4 foot in diameter. After the burl is cut to rough size (1×1 x 6-8) he dries it (them) in a large cabinet about 2×8 x 8. Then they get stabilized in a pressure pot you won’t believe. I could be wrong but I believe that...

Adapter that will transform your HF lathe

Adapter that will transform your HF lathe

01-19-2010 05:55 AM by David Craig | 4 comments »

A friend of mine gave me a Harbor Freight last year to help support my interest in turning. It isn’t a bad beginner lathe and I am definitely not one to complain about such a thoughtful gift, but I did find the mounting and remounting of turned pieces on a faceplate frustrating over time. The lathe has a proprietary 3/4 inch x 10tpi spindle which makes purchasing 3rd party vendor chucks nearly impossible. I recently discovered, though, that Penn State Industries manufactures adapters fo...

A better mouse trap.....

A better mouse trap.....

I received the Sorby Sandmaster from my children as a Christmas present. On the surface you might think “Why do I need a tool for sanding a bowl?” I normally use regular sandpaper (Norton or 3M) for finishing my bowls; this however turned out to be a whole different story. I found that I am not seeing the wonderful concentric circles from the sandpaper scratches and I don’t believe I’m getting much if any heat buildup. I just completed a crotch maple bowl this mornin...

Benjamin's Best 6 piece Anniversary Set

Benjamin's Best 6 piece Anniversary Set

I purchased this set of tools with a $10 coupon from Penn State, and have had about a week to put them to use. For the most part these are decent chisels, hold an edge well, and are beefy enough to prevent chatter.I knocked off one star due to the length of the chisel as a whole. I was expecting them to be a bit longer, They will suffice for work on my midi-lathe, but if you are getting into larger pieces I could foresee them being a bit of a hindrance. The chisels came with a decent g...

I’m not the type of woodworker with a lot of discretionary income to throw at every cool tool that hits the shelves. However, I am the type that might spend a little more for simplicity and ease of use to maximize the limited time I actual have to play in the shop. I was in Kentucky last weekend for a funeral (Grandpa – 83 years, struggled with Parkinson’s, comforted now that he free of illness, but is missed!) and passed a Woodcraft store. My Dad and I dropped in so I co...

Rockler Pen Starter Kit and turning kits

Rockler Pen Starter Kit and turning kits

I decided to finally give up my boycott and try my hand at pen making. I didn’t want to become one of those “pen guys”. There are a lot of things you need to get started on pen one. I bought the starter set as it seemed the simplist way to go about it. Having turned a couple pens now, I might have done it differently. The pricing is good considering the a la carte prices of the components. I found, however, I would have opted for different components. The mandrel work...

Leatherman Skeletool CX Multitool, It's what Batman would carry.

Leatherman Skeletool CX Multitool, It's what Batman would carry.

I already have a multi-tool (Swiss Army Champion Plus), it’s a great tool to be sure, but for me out of the 30 tools in it I only ever use the small blade and once in a blue moon the scissors. It’s a “little of everything” tool but not particularly strong in any one of the particular tools. The allure of the Skeletool for me was:The simplicity, but being strong in what it gives you:1. On the CX model, the 154CM combo plain/serrated blade is beefy enough to do a job ...
