Magical little tool

Magical little tool

On the plastic tube it came in it says ””If you’re not 100% satisfied, Ill buy it back.” Craig Jackson, Founder” Thanks, but nope, Im keeping mine!My wife bought this as a Christmas present for me. This is a tool I have heard great things about, but just couldn’t justify the high cost for such a simple little tool.I am amazed at how well this thing cuts. And the cost is 100% justified!Simply amazed!10 Stars! For those who do not know what this gem is, It...

Why did I wait so long?

Why did I wait so long?

I order all of my pen supplies from Penn State and kept seeing this on their site. I don’t do a whole lot of acrylic work, but when I read reviews on their site saying it worked just as well on a CA finished pen as a final buff, I figured it was worth a try. The directions on the bottle say to sand to 400-600 grit. Wanting to err on the side of caution I went to 600 grit (as opposed to the normal 12,000 I typically use on acrylics) and turned off the lathe. My sanding marks at this p...

Great at first look, but in the long run, not so much

Great at first look, but in the long run, not so much

So first off let me say that the reason for the rating is due to long term use of the stopper. The stopper use with a turned top is easy to do and assembly is simple too. My reason for the rating is due to the chemical reaction that occurs between the chrome and the wine acid. As you can see by the second image, the chrome is being dissolved into the wine. The way I found this out was that I had a open bottle laying on it’s side in my fridge for a few weeks and I pulled it out to fi...

First Nova chuck and very disappointed

First Nova chuck and very disappointed

08-02-2011 05:19 PM by SSMDad | 4 comments »

I originally purchased the PSI Barracuda2000 chuck and it worked well until two of the jaw popped out and got stuck. When I returned it I figured I’d try this Nova since people seemed so keen on the brand and the “SuperNova” was overkill for me. Firstly the little threads that grab onto the piece: the Nova only has 1 and it doesn’t grip that well (the PSI I believe has 4 threads on the jaws). I tried 4 different types and sizes of blanks (both spindle and tennoned...

Elbo articulated hollower

Elbo articulated hollower

07-27-2011 12:46 AM by michelletwo | 3 comments »

I just set up this new tool and hollowed this piece of firewood( 8×5w ) to 6 inches. Very easy to use. (I have hollowed by hand, so I do know how) Anyone who has a modest amount of turning experience will find it relatively easy to do. I got this from Packard Woodworks and I believe it is the least expensive on the market at this time. The bad? One of the grub screws was already stripped before I even put it together. One of the long bolts that clamp the holder on the quill, was sh...

Segmented Turning, A Good Beginning by Bill Kandler

Segmented Turning, A Good Beginning by Bill Kandler

06-08-2011 04:17 PM by Bluepine38 | 2 comments »

8iowa mentioned Bill Kandler’s book in one of his posts, and since I was ready to start on segmentedturning and was trying to design a miter sled, I checked out his site. He not only had a miter sled, but hegave a free download of it’s design and how to build it. Naturally, like any woodworker, (we all seem to thinkwe can boil water better than the next guy syndrome) I am tweaking it to suit myself. Bill gives this awayin spite of the fact that he wants to sell you the complete...

csc 2000 from psi

csc 2000 from psi

06-07-2011 05:26 AM by paplou | 0 comments »

I have had my csc2000 chuck for over a month now and its way more then I expected for the price. I have turned a few bowls and a couple 11 inch plates plus a few baby rattles and have had zero problems with it. I bought it through Amazon and saved a few dollars. I recently bought the spindle drive for it and only tried it a few times but it work like it should, saves time in that I don’t have to remove the chuck to turn between centers. I have it mount on cheap craftsman lathe and al...

Easywoodtools faceplate

Easywoodtools faceplate

05-09-2011 06:05 PM by hairy | 4 comments »

This deserves more than 5 stars. High quality at a good price. Item F625 I got myself in a situation where I needed 2 faceplates at the same time. The other in the second picture is made by Don Pencil, another very good one. I looked around the web and decided on this one. Woodcraft had it at the exact same price that easywoodtools did, so I cut out the middleman. It was on my front porch almost 24 hours after I ordered it. It came from Lexington, Ky. That’s about a 2 hour driv...

A nice chuck for cheap

A nice chuck for cheap

05-04-2011 06:48 AM by bobasaurus | 10 comments »

I purchased the PSI Barracuda 2 chuck system off Amazon to improve my ability to make bowls. The price was very reasonable considering the good quality and extra accessories included. There are four sets of jaws that cover any tenon diameter I could need, and an attachment to make it into a screw chuck. It’s threaded for a 1” dia 8 tpi spindle, which fits my old Delta lathe perfectly (there’s also an adapter for 3/4 16 included). The chuck jaws have ridges to keep a stro...
