Outstanding Work-holding System

Outstanding Work-holding System

08-21-2016 10:03 PM by TheDane | 3 comments »

I have been looking for a better way to hold work on the lathe, particularly for finishing the bottom of bowls and hollow forms. I have tried Cole Jaws, Longworth Chucks, jam chucks, etc. with varying degrees of success but nothing I was completely satisfied with. Then I saw the Frugal Vacuum Chuck … http://www.frugalvacuumchuck.com/ ... in a friend’s shop, and knew I had to have one. At a recent symposium, I connected with Frugal Vacuum Chuck inventor Bob Leonard and came h...

D-Way Beading and Point/Teardrop Tool Review

D-Way Beading and Point/Teardrop Tool Review

04-04-2016 01:52 PM by JimChrisawn | 2 comments »

I wanted to share a brief review and some information on a few tools from Dave at D-Way tools. Let me begin by saying I have in no way been compensated for this review. The tools I am reviewing were purchased by me at Daves website at full price. I would like to begin with the beading tools. Dave makes five sizes of beading tools. There are a lot of different beading tools on the market and I have tried a few of them, but these are standouts! They are used flute down and are made of excell...

I would like to give a brief review of a mixed bag of Doug Thompson lathe tools, handles and tool steel blanks.Let me begin by saying right up front Doug in NO way influenced this review and I was not compensated in an way for this review unless…Unless great customer service, quality tools, and a business owner who will actually take time to share his experience and listen to yours in an honest open way is to be considered compensation. As can be seen in the picture I have a few Thom...

1st. Opinion of grizzly 4 jaw chuck H6267 vicmark (vm100 copy)

1st. Opinion of grizzly 4 jaw chuck H6267 vicmark (vm100 copy)

So this is my early opinion of this grizzly chuck. Mine is the H6267 and has the 1 1/4”X 8tpi adapter included. This chuck is sold under several different part numbers, based on what adapter you need.I had read that it was a close enough copy to the vicmarc vm100, and that the vicmarc jaws would fit it.This grizzly chuck is about half the cost of the vicmarc at $120.00. I have used the chuck 4 or 5 times now with the dove tail jaws that came with it.The chuck does feel a little clunk...

My roommate and i have had a lathe for around a year now and only had the old tools that came with it. they were not very good and we didnt use it much because its a bit much to start with. i had been reading about carbide tools for some time but the cost it what kept me away. I saw the rockler set was on sale for $100 over the US thanksgiving weekend so thought it might be worth the try. I am very impressed already! so much easier to use! Other item that people talk about is how you cant sha...

Oneway drill wizard

Oneway drill wizard

I looked at this for a long time. I got it about a year ago and have used it on 2 projects. It does what it does very well. All I’ve done with it could have been done without it, but not as easy or accurate. Right out of the box I put a bit in a drill and mounted it to the lathe. I had to cut down the post to get the bit on center. That’s with the post bottomed out in the banjo. It’s made for chair makers. I’m not there yet, but it will do what I need. ...

Bargain box of Sand paper rolls

Bargain box of Sand paper rolls

08-20-2015 04:47 AM by bigJohninvegas | 5 comments »

I found this box of sand paper rolls on Klingspor’s web site, advertising a 20# box of end rolls for wood turners. I like there sand paper rolls for turning and normally would buy 1.5”X10 yard rolls from them. 7 grits at about $8/ roll. so $56 when you need all of themThis deal was about $30 for a 20# box assortment at 100 Grit or finer. This box has a couple of 80 and 100 grit rolls, 5 or so each 120, 150, 180, and 220, a couple 280, and 320, and 1 of each 400, 600, and 800. ...

Excellent Customer Service

Excellent Customer Service

08-04-2015 03:15 PM by Julian | 5 comments »

I recently made another purchase for carbide cutters from Captain Eddie. Long story short; the post office lost my package/envelope from Capt. Eddie. I contacted him and he graciously said he would send out another shipment at no extra cost. I was not expecting him to do that. The postal service was the one to blame. I definitely will continue to purchase from Big Guy Productions.

This review is for the three tool set Rougher smoother and detailer in Medium and in small

Turning can be one of the most rewarding activities in a woodshop. There are many reasons for this but I will offer these for a start: You can quickly go from rough stock to finished project in under an hour. It is simple to learn to turn and it can easily be picked up on a video or from a book. The work can be quite beautiful and can sell for a large amount with a small investment. There are many other reasons turning can be your favorite task in your shop, and in fact there are many woodwor...

Duplicator & Spindle Steady

Duplicator & Spindle Steady

04-26-2015 06:13 AM by pjones46 | 4 comments »

I finally pulled the trigger on the purchase of a USA made Vega D36 Pro Lathe Duplicator along with a Canadian made Oneway Spindle Steady. The Vega D36 allows you to use either a template which you make (which has the profile of the turning cut into it) or you can mount an original turning up to 4? diameter which you wish to copy. Material is quickly removed by locking cutters in-out motion and turning the handwheel of the duplicator to move the cutter along the axis of the lathe bed. The...
