Easy Tools for Woodturning Rougher, Finisher and Detail Tools

*UPDATE* After using these tools for a few months and turning lots of stuff I have found a reason to complain.. But really these are great tools and seem to live up to marketing however the edges do not last as long as you might think, They do not stay super sharp and then one day become dull. It is an over time degradation so you reach a point where the tool is not dull but not really sharp either… You have to debate on whether to turn the blade and what happens is you don’t t...

Benjamin's Best 6 piece Anniversary Set

Benjamin's Best 6 piece Anniversary Set

I purchased this set of tools with a $10 coupon from Penn State, and have had about a week to put them to use. For the most part these are decent chisels, hold an edge well, and are beefy enough to prevent chatter.I knocked off one star due to the length of the chisel as a whole. I was expecting them to be a bit longer, They will suffice for work on my midi-lathe, but if you are getting into larger pieces I could foresee them being a bit of a hindrance. The chisels came with a decent g...

A better mouse trap.....

A better mouse trap.....

I received the Sorby Sandmaster from my children as a Christmas present. On the surface you might think “Why do I need a tool for sanding a bowl?” I normally use regular sandpaper (Norton or 3M) for finishing my bowls; this however turned out to be a whole different story. I found that I am not seeing the wonderful concentric circles from the sandpaper scratches and I don’t believe I’m getting much if any heat buildup. I just completed a crotch maple bowl this mornin...

PSI Drill Centering Pen Vise, cheaply made

PSI Drill Centering Pen Vise, cheaply made

03-11-2010 08:23 AM by tooldad | 11 comments »

Got this vise with a starter kit from PSI. About a 100 pens later it has come apart twice and caused at least 4-6 students to ruin blanks due to moving while drilling. What seems to happen is the ring spring clamp (I’m not sure what it is called) keeps popping off when tightened. It took 4 hands and a ring separator pliers to get it back on, and that is not an exaggeration. I think it would have been okay in my home workshop, but definitely not high output shops. Called customer ...

Pink Tool Set for Ladies - Apollo Precision 39-piece

Pink Tool Set for Ladies - Apollo Precision 39-piece

Apollo Precision 39-piece Pink Tool Set I suggest you this awesome tool set. It was really nice to be able to give a tool set to my wife that not only was sturdy and comprehensive but also aesthetically looked great with their shocking pink accents. I’m not allowed to use the pink tools so I’m told (I’m terrible for putting tools back in their proper place) but there’s no way I could confuse them with mine so I don’t think she has to worry! Great bundle...

Abranet Sanding Mesh

Abranet Sanding Mesh

03-25-2010 09:42 PM by Darell | 5 comments »

I thought I’d try this Abranet Sanding Mesh to sand my pen blanks. Sanding has always been the hated chore of my penmaking. The Abranet Sanding Mesh has made this task much easier. I cut a 1” strip off each of 5 grits and after 15 pens I’m still using the same pieces and they don’t show any signs of wearing out yet. This stuff is much, much easier to use that the old sandpaper strips I had before. I won’t be using the old stuff any more. Wish I’d boug...

Turning can be one of the most rewarding activities in a woodshop. There are many reasons for this but I will offer these for a start: You can quickly go from rough stock to finished project in under an hour. It is simple to learn to turn and it can easily be picked up on a video or from a book. The work can be quite beautiful and can sell for a large amount with a small investment. There are many other reasons turning can be your favorite task in your shop, and in fact there are many woodwor...

Affordable but top notch turning tool

Affordable but top notch turning tool

09-12-2010 05:02 PM by mckenziedrums | 3 comments »

I’m a relative newbie to all things turning… and while I haven’t ventured very far out of the pen turning thing yet I know well enough to try and make sure I have the right tools around for the job. As with most folks I grabbed one of the cheapie kits of turning tools when I started and while those work well enough when you keep the sharp I wanted to get a more substantial skew that I could use for other projects and that would hold it’s edge better. I debated on wheth...
