PSI Drill Centering Pen Vise, cheaply made

PSI Drill Centering Pen Vise, cheaply made

1583 days ago by tooldad | 11 comments »

Got this vise with a starter kit from PSI. About a 100 pens later it has come apart twice and caused at least 4-6 students to ruin blanks due to moving while drilling. What seems to happen is the ring spring clamp (I’m not sure what it is called) keeps popping off when tightened. It took 4 hands and a ring separator pliers to get it back on, and that is not an exaggeration. I think it would have been okay in my home workshop, but definitely not high output shops. Called customer ...

Using Steussy's 6" and 8" bowlsaw

Using Steussy's 6" and 8" bowlsaw

1987 days ago by Bob Collins | 10 comments »

I have used the bowlsaws on soft and hard wood blanks, including Australian Red Gum, expensive burl blanks and other exotic wood, I realised that FINALLY here is a tool for the serious and the hobby turner alike. An inexpensive tool for saving the core of that expensive blank you bought which normally you would turn 75% of into saw dust. The size of the blank you start with will determine if you will get two or three bowls from the one blank and the more depth the blank has will give ...

BowlSaw

BowlSaw

1987 days ago by DougTx | 10 comments »

I had a very good experience with the 6” BowlSaw. The pictures show a black walnut blank that I now have a bowl and another piece that can be turned into a smaller bowl and/or a box. I followed the instructions included with the tool and did not have any problems. I started at 120 rpms and finished at 400 rpms. Will probably get the 8” tool and thus can core larger blanks and possibly make 3 bowl out of one blank.DougTx

Pictures for Alba

Pictures for Alba

1324 days ago by Bluepine38 | 10 comments »

I mentioned a cross slide rest to Alba thinking it might help him and his “Jolly Rogues” in some way. He askedme to show some pictures, so here are the pictures and my review, I will do a blog on the rebuild of this wonderful old machine later. The Cross Slide Rest was originally made by Delta to enable people to do metalwork on a lathe. I am a 71 year young craftsman with a slightly hard used body, I just did not think my parts would wear out this quick, so I have a little pro...

A nice chuck for cheap

A nice chuck for cheap

1164 days ago by bobasaurus | 10 comments »

I purchased the PSI Barracuda 2 chuck system off Amazon to improve my ability to make bowls. The price was very reasonable considering the good quality and extra accessories included. There are four sets of jaws that cover any tenon diameter I could need, and an attachment to make it into a screw chuck. It’s threaded for a 1” dia 8 tpi spindle, which fits my old Delta lathe perfectly (there’s also an adapter for 3/4 16 included). The chuck jaws have ridges to keep a stro...

To expensive and kind of gimmicky

To expensive and kind of gimmicky

564 days ago by Chris Wright | 10 comments »

I got a chance to see the Easy Wood Tools new Easy Chuck. I was pretty excited because I wanted to see how it worked and after looking at it I have to say I’m pretty disappointed. The first thing I noticed is that it is direct threaded. This I think is a bad idea. If you start turning with a midi lathe with a 1” x 8 tpi spindle and move up to one with 1 1/4” x 8 tpi spindle you’d have to buy a new chuck. There is no way to use a wrench to remove the body from the ...

Set of 8 Benjamin's Best HSS Lathe Chisel, good chisels, great price

Set of 8 Benjamin's Best HSS Lathe Chisel, good chisels, great price

1897 days ago by Chris Wright | 9 comments »

With our wood turning program growing here at the shop, we were able to get new equipment, and part of that were two sets of the 8 piece Benjamin’s Best HSS lathe chisels from PSI ($69.95). I had never heard of Benjamin’s Best before I started pen turning and looking through the PSI catalog. So when I saw a 8 piece set of HSS tools for $70 I was skeptical of the quality. When they arrived I inspected them and they all needed to be re-ground, not a big deal since we also got a n...

Nice tool, but not perfect.

Nice tool, but not perfect.

204 days ago by Marcus | 9 comments »

So I’ll start off the review by saying that I am pretty new to turning, and very new to turning bowls. I’ve been using a 3/8” Sorby gouge and it works well. I’ve been watching a few videos of the easy wood tools on youtube and decided I had to get one. The price is more than your standard bowl gouge at $120 (and another $15 when you have to replace the blade), but cheaper than the Sorby carbide tools. I picked mine up at Woodcraft, and after talking to a few turner...

As advertised

As advertised

I’m not the type of woodworker with a lot of discretionary income to throw at every cool tool that hits the shelves. However, I am the type that might spend a little more for simplicity and ease of use to maximize the limited time I actual have to play in the shop. I was in Kentucky last weekend for a funeral (Grandpa – 83 years, struggled with Parkinson’s, comforted now that he free of illness, but is missed!) and passed a Woodcraft store. My Dad and I dropped in so I co...
