Ultimate saw horse/table

Ultimate saw horse/table

04-12-2009 03:09 PM by Scott Oldre | 12 comments »

This is the ultimate accessory in my garage shop. It, and it’s twin, gets pulled out on nearly every single project I take on. Sometimes it becomes semi permanent, and other times it’s out for an hour or two. I saw this table/horse about 2 years ago while strolling down the “Hey look at me, take me home” display isle at Home Depot and since I was with my wife she nonchalantly wiped the drool from my chin and said “Lets go to the plants now!” Since it wa...

The Portamate PM7000 Miter Saw Stand and Power Tool Work Center

The Portamate PM7000 Miter Saw Stand and Power Tool Work Center

I just received this glorified miter saw stand. It was well packaged and delivered undamaged. Assembly was very simple and straightforward as were the instructions. I have been looking at this and the Craftsman version for quite some time. The only differences in the two are paint color (Portamate orange, Sear red), the Sears only has one wheel whereas the Portamate has two… and the Sears is about $50 higher in price. I got mine for $199, no tax and free shipping. This item co...

Professional Miter Saw Stand - Great tool stand and very flexible

Professional Miter Saw Stand - Great tool stand and very flexible

I purchased this Miter Saw Stand after researching many other stands at Menards and Home Depot. I acquired the unit in April 2009 for $149.99 when it was on sale (normally $189.99) and I have found it a great product. A few months after buying it Menards had it on sale for $129.99 which would have made it an even greater stand. I have two miter saws (a regular 10” stationary and a 10” sliding miter) and wanted a stand that I could mount lboth saws on side-by-side. To do this...

300 Lb. Capacity Mobile Base from Harbor Freight

300 Lb. Capacity Mobile Base from Harbor Freight

This is a very well made kit. Corners are welded and the finish is excellent. The wheels and levelers look to be more than adequate for the weight. All the pieces and hardware come sealed in plastic bags. The box is flimsy, so I wouldn’t advise buying it online, it might tear apart in shipping. Assembly requires ripping some hardwood, cutting to lengths specified in the directions, drilling the holes and bolting it together. The directions say to drill only two holes on each end of t...

Harbor Freight Bench Grinder Stand: Solid, great value

Harbor Freight Bench Grinder Stand: Solid, great value

With Harbor Freight, it really pays to go into the store and see what you’re getting, because their product quality varies a lot. I looked first at their “universal tool stand” (big enough for a planer), and found it more than a bit flimsy, due to thin sheet metal construction. But the bench grinder stand is very solid, made of steel that is 1/16 thick. The parts fit together with holes lining up perfectly, and the design makes the assembly very stable. The bolts and n...

Woodcraft's WoodRiver Mobile Base Kit

Woodcraft's WoodRiver Mobile Base Kit

I recently mounted my bandsaw on a mobile base using Woodcraft’s WoodRiver Universal Mobile Base Hardware Kit. I have used similar kits before, and generally like them. Some of the features of this kit are a considerable improvement over past versions, but one change confuses me, and made it difficult to decide on an overall rating. THE GOOD: The kit is based on user-supplied lumber, such as plywood. Previously, the steel corners were equipped to take only one piece of nominal 3/...

HTC Portamate HTC PBR-001 PortaMate Wood Rack

HTC Portamate HTC PBR-001 PortaMate Wood Rack

I just added this to my still-going-together garage shop last week. I’m still moving in, but have already started a couple of projects. As usual, I’m left with some plywood drops that will be usable on future projects, but I needed a place to store them until that time. I had a spot that was not being used for anything else, so I ordered this wood rack. I paid $52.64 with free shipping. It arrived fully clothed and unbeaten by Fed-ex. Installation was twelve screws for the ...

Great little stand for my Bandsaw Station

Great little stand for my Bandsaw Station

I wanted a support for my benchtop bandsaw and have been mulling the idea of making one until I came across this. For $28 it was a great deal from Harbor Freight. It is adjustable height but is a bit short for me for most things (Im 6’4”), b ut for my bandsaw I thought it would be perfect. It came with middle and bottom shelving material that was very flimsy hardboard, I’m talking so thin the box was stronger. I made new shelves out of some 3/4” particle board. ...

HF Mobile Base is Dead On and Rock Solid!

HF Mobile Base is Dead On and Rock Solid!

03-14-2012 01:49 PM by Bob | 20 comments »

INTRO:I spent way too much time researching mobile bases. In the end, despite the nay sayers, I decided to give the HF mobile base a try. I paid $29.95 with a super coupon. ASSEMBLY:The metal brackets are very thick. I ripped some SYP I had lying around to the 1 1/4” x 1 1/4 dimension specified. There is a formula in the manual that tells you exactly how long to cut your wood pieces. As a double check, I placed each of the brackets (with bolts in place) against the 4 corners of ...
