The Woodwright's Guide: Working Wood With Wedge & Edge

The Woodwright's Guide: Working Wood With Wedge & Edge

Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2008. “It’s just a piece of wood, but let’s see what your axe handle has to say.” (p.4) From the opening sentence of St. Roy’s latest tome exudes the essence of Underhill, both myth and man. As a young boy, my grandfather had me chopping wood for my breakfast, and the only thing I remember my axe handle saying were words not fit to use here, but when Roy visits an axe handle, it suddenly springs to lively disc...

The Bandsaw Book by Lonnie Bird

The Bandsaw Book by Lonnie Bird

Lonnie Bird talks about everything that should have been in you bandsaw’s owners manual. A great book for beginners (like me), walking me though the ins and outs of bandsaw setup, maintenance and use. I had this book open on my workbench last night trying to fold my first bandsaw blade back into a 3 loop fold (I used method #2 out of the book). Nicely laid out, plenty of high quality photo’s. This will be my go to resource for my bandsaw questions.

TWW finishing book & DVD

TWW finishing book & DVD

I just received my copy of Marc Spagnuolo’s first book, along with the “Best Of 2009” Guild videos DVD. As I can’t afford a subscription to the WW Guild, this was a good option for me to support him a little, plus I like tech/art books, and this is one of those: finishing is both a bit technical and absolutely has something to do with art. So for a quick review: if you’re used to Mark’s videos, you’ll be into well-known territory, the book reads...

Mouldings In Practice By Matthew Bickford

Mouldings In Practice By Matthew Bickford

I am happy to share this new book on the subject of moulding planes. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Considering how I have not found another book that covers this subject, it is the modern go to book on the subject of moulding planes. I started investigating moulding planes several years ago and made a couple of my own to use in my case work so I can appreciate the usefulness of these remarkably simple yet highly sophisticated planes. At first glance these planes seem quite m...

For their 25th anniversary in operation, book publisher TASCHEN put out 150 special editions of mostly art-based books spread across a wide array of periods and genres. There’s a book on artwork from ancient Egypt, others collecting the works of traditional favorites (Matisse, Van Gogh, Monet). There are books on modern artists (Escher, Pollock), books on beautiful destinations, and books on artistic movements (Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Dadaism). There are several books on the...

My first attempt at building from plans....

My first attempt at building from plans....

751 days ago by RONFINCH | 10 comments »

It’s a little scary stepping up your projects in size and difficulties. Since I normally am totally lost when looking at most plans, I thought this would be a good project to start with. I wanted to build this chair out of Cypress, however, my local wood store was out of premium Cypress and convinced me to use Spanish Cedar instead….... won’t do that again. I figured I might could stretch 45 board feet into 2 chairs. So, ordering 45 board feet I was charged for 62 board feet...

An Essential Read

An Essential Read

1950 days ago by thewoodwhisperer | 9 comments »

**This review was pulled from a previous blog post on The Wood Whisperer Many of you may already know Chris Schwarz. He is an editor for Popular Woodworking Magazine and a self-confessed hand-tool and workbench enthusiast. His most recent work is a book called Workbenches, truly a modest title for what is contained within those 144 pages. Perhaps it was just great timing, since I am currently focusing on my hand tool skills, but this book really struck a chord with me. In fact, since my tw...
