The Workbench Design BookBy: Christopher Schwartz ISBN-10: 1558708405 ISBN-13: 978-1558708402 This book is really a landmark in workbench books for me. The workbench design book is a book that takes you on a tour in workbenches; we get a little historical insight, some geographical insight and the chance to see what workbenches some of the top guides of the trade are using. My personal favorite are with no doubt the 21st-century Workbench, this bench is so rock solid and well tho...

A Museum of early American toolsby: Eric Sloane Again a book I was recommended, this time by our fellow LJ littlecope who got his from his father. It is a book of illustrations with short texts that explains the tools and their use.For those of us that are curious about old traditional hand tools, this book is a pearl, not only does it show us the tools and tell us the story, but it is also so beautifully illustrated that you can enjoy it as a art piece. I do not have a lot of wo...

This book review is from the November 2011 issue of our LumberJocks’ eMag Toolemera is donating another book for a free draw! (See below for details)The Art and Craft of Cabinet Making by D. Denning This is another of the historic books, this one being written in 1891. This book doesn’t hold as much appeal to me due to it being a lot of words and fewer diagrams. But—some of the headings listed in the contents had me turning the pages to take a look. For example, don’t ...

Author: Nick Engler. I’ll bet a lot of seasoned LJ’s already know about this book but many others won’t so here goes. So, you’re relatively new to woodworking and you want to know which of the seven types of chisels and firmer gouges you have. In this book you can see a picture of each, and explanation of what each is and how it’s used and sure enough a picture of yours. You’ve got paring chisels, the type to be pushed with your hands not a mallet.Or, yo...

Great Book

Great Book

So I just finished reading the Anarchist’s Tool Chest by Chris Schwartz. It was a very good book. I like how Chris presents his progression from a tool hoarder, to what can be called a minimalist carpenter, without being to preachy. He talks a lot about using tools to build things of quality and distinct purpose which will last multiple lifetimes instead of running out to a box store and buying something that will do ‘for now.’ I am guilty of this. Running out to buy a media console for a ...

Books on Blade Sharpening: the Good and the Bad

Summary: I recently read a bunch of books on tool sharpening, and wanted to share the ones I would recommend to friends. There are a lot of bad books out there, but there are three I have read that stand head an shoulders above the rest. They are, in the order that I would recommend them: “The Perfect Edge, the Ultimate Guide to Sharpening for Woodworkers” Ron Hock—5 Stars“The Complete Guide to Sharpening” Leonard Lee—5 Stars“Taunton’s C...
