The Golden Ratio by Mario Livio

The Golden Ratio by Mario Livio

This is definitely a 5 star book on the subject. The author leaves no stone un-turned. The book is fascinating, informative, thorough, very interesting and sometimes, a bit boring. The author shows where many of the Golden Ratio enthusiasts take great liberty with the dimensions they use to “prove” their point of view. I highly recommend this book to anyone with any interest in the subject. The author explains things so a layman can understand it. However, a bit of math b...

Must have book for ANY woodworker!!!

Tom Fidgen is one of our own. He’s been a Lumberjock for almost two years now. About three months ago he announced the completion of his book in THIS blog. I was shocked to see that he didn’t get much feedback from the blog post (only 9 comments). But I knew it was a book I was going to need in my collection. The book was released to Amazon and Boarders just in time for the holidays and I put it at the top of my Christmas list. Well let me tell you, it did not disappoint. I abs...

Starting an Outdoor Furniture Manufacturing Business

For as long as I can remember there have discussions here at Lumber Jocks about doing woodworking as a business or getting paid for the master pieces that come out of our shops. I know everyone that has enjoyed wood working or any other creative outlet has said to them self “How can I do this and make a living at it”? Well I ask the same question every time I am in the shop. I found what I consider about the most straight up and to the point, down and dirty “Here is how it’s done, but it’s no...

Want to build Craftsman style furniture?

Want to build Craftsman style furniture?

This is an amazing book containing shop drawings of Stickley furniture. These are not plans, they are shop drawings. The book is divided into chapters by room: dining, bedroom, etc. I have built several of the projects in here including a small table and a mirror. I am in the process of building the Little Journey’s table and a large dining table as well. There is a huge variety of projects. In order to build a project you should be experienced in planning. I usually create ...

Having seen Many of Darrell Pearts fine Greene and Greene inspired most wonderful fine furniture pieces posted on LJ s I thought I would look at his profile and found his great web site were he had his book available so I decided to order one. When I Ordered this book my expectations were low because I’ve purchased artisans books from web site before and received anything from computer printed pages stapled together to what looks like a pamphlet with minimal information. After receiving...

A little anarchy might be good for the soul

A little anarchy might be good for the soul

Christopher Schwarz’s The Anarchists Tool Chest sounded, based on some reviews, to be a bit of a mixed bag. Many folks have compared it to other works, to varying degrees. My honest impression is that there really isn’t a book out there for the hand tool crowd. Schwarz’s work is a default go-to manual for the neophyte hand tool user, whether they’re new to woodworking or just new to hand tools. The first question anyone asks is “what do I need?” Inva...

Japanese Woodworking Tools: Their Tradition, Spirit, and UseBy: Toshio Odate ISBN-10: 0941936465 ISBN-13: 978-0941936460 This book is one of the most inspiring woodworking tools books I have read. Toshio Odate has a ability to tell what you want to know, what you need to know and still spice it with stories from his life, Japanese history and myths. This he do in the wonderful tone of a craftsman with a solid long apprenticeship under the wings of a master (his father) and a long lif...
