Want to build Craftsman style furniture?
313 days ago by gizmodyne | 14 comments »
This is an amazing book containing shop drawings of Stickley furniture. These are not plans, they are shop drawings. The book is divided into chapters by room: dining, bedroom, etc. I have built several of the projects in here including a small table and a mirror. I am in the process of building the Little Journey’s table and a large dining table as well. There is a huge variety of projects. In order to build a project you should be experienced in planning. I usually create ...
The Ultimate Router Book

Hardcover: 344 pages Publisher: Readers Digest; Rev Upd edition (June 1, 2006) Language: English ISBN-10: 0762108002 ISBN-13: 978-0762108008 Product Dimensions: 11.2×8.8×1.4 inches I just completed reading through this book and it is by far the best router book I have read. I would highly recommend this book to anyone whether a total router newbie (like me) or a seasoned veteran. There are plenty of tips, jigs, table plans, etc. in this book and Bill Hylton’s writing styl...
The Woodwright's Guide: Working Wood With Wedge & Edge
40 days ago by Texasgaloot | 11 comments »
Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2008. “It’s just a piece of wood, but let’s see what your axe handle has to say.” (p.4) From the opening sentence of St. Roy’s latest tome exudes the essence of Underhill, both myth and man. As a young boy, my grandfather had me chopping wood for my breakfast, and the only thing I remember my axe handle saying were words not fit to use here, but when Roy visits an axe handle, it suddenly springs to lively disc...
Thinking about a thumpin' slab? This is your book!

I picked up this book recently after stumbling across a mention, then a review, then a bunch of raves. I chose to purchase the book directly from Lost Art Press, getting the Deluxe Edition (w/ CD). Their website didn’t want to have anything to do with my credit card, but that simply meant I had to deal directly with a real live and very courteous individual. The verdict on the purchasing experience: the folks at Lost Art Press are a pleasure to deal with. But, you may be wondering...
An Essential Read

**This review was pulled from a previous blog post on The Wood Whisperer Many of you may already know Chris Schwarz. He is an editor for Popular Woodworking Magazine and a self-confessed hand-tool and workbench enthusiast. His most recent work is a book called Workbenches, truly a modest title for what is contained within those 144 pages. Perhaps it was just great timing, since I am currently focusing on my hand tool skills, but this book really struck a chord with me. In fact, since my tw...
Enlightening

I just got this book in the mail yesterday after I had found it on amazon while looking for another book. I was able to read the introduction before I ordered and I was already impressed. Sam Sherrill takes an ecological, economic, and just common sense approach to addressing the waste that our society generates by not treating felled trees of our urban forests as assets or inventory but as waste to be thrown away. I haven’t completed reading the book cover to cover yet, (I’m...
Most useful literature in my shop, easily.

While this is not a tool, this book has earned its spot as one of my most useful assets in my shop. After posting numerous threads that requested help from the more experienced Jocks, I was told that Flexner’s book was the “Bible” of finishing. While I laughed at that, it turned out to be the case. In the last several months since the purchase, I have yet to have a finishing question that wasn’t explained in detail within the pages. My favorite feature is the indiv...
If you want to fall in love with furnituremaking - read this book!

I read this book when I was just starting out. It isa spiritual revelation in terms of what it means to work with wood – and do it well. It’s not a book of plans and there isn’t enough informationin here to teach you how to build anything if you don’thave any skills. This book (and Krenov’s others) are about Feelings. Theyare about discovering the wood and discovering a designprocess that produces furniture that is finely proportionedand intimate –...
The best book on power-tool joinery

I have a lot of woodworking books. About 60 of them. Yeung Chan’s book is one of the best and most practicalof them all. He shows several ways to make each jointso even with a modestly equipped shop you’ll be ableto make quality joints. Yeung’s jig designs are great too. They aren’t complicatedor hard to build and he explains how to make sure theyare accurate. Gary Rogowski also wrote some great books about making joints – but if you get just one get ...
The Complete Guide To Sharpening by Leonard Lee, Taunton Press 1995 ($22.95 US/$32.95 CN)

About the BookWhile Leonard Lee’s book on sharpening is nearly 14 years in print, it still ranks well above other texts on the topic. Mr. Lee’s strong attention to the science behind his sharpening methods leaves readers feeling confident about using what they’ve learned. This book will teach you just about everything—no, on second thought, make that EVERYTHING—about sharpening woodworking tools, kitchen knives, craft tools and anything else that has an edge. ...
