Review of The Anarchist’s Tool ChestBy: Christopher Schwarz I have just re written the review slightly since I after reading it again could see that I could be read wrong in some passages, that they could be read like ‘personal’, I belive what is left now is not more personal than Schwarz’s choose to put us inside in his book. I never meant to harm Schwarz’s I try to review a book.(I posted a mark in the comments so you can se where the old and new comments is). Before I sta...

The Anarchists Tool Chest

The Anarchists Tool Chest

Mr. Schwarz really turned it up a notch with the Anarchists Tool Chest. This book was a deviation from some of his other books that I have read in that it contained a story. The story was woven underneath the information about the essential toolkit that a woodworker should but together. Mr. Schwarz explains how to put together a set of tools that will help a woodworker complete all the essential taks. The text includes information about choosing the right tools and how to use them correct...

A book so good, it must be spoken of in whispers...

Am I the only one that can’t say “The Wood Whisperer” without giggling? I picture one of those close talkers, the guy who leans in to say something with an extra dose of breath and spit. Well, I am here to tell you, Marc Spagnuolo is not one of those guys. He’s the “good” kind of wood whisperer, the kind that has useful secrets to share, and always does so at a comfortable distance. Until recently, Marc only whispered those secrets at slumber parties and on...

Should be retitled Hand tools for the power tool woodworker.

Should be retitled Hand tools for the power tool woodworker.

I bought this book with really high hopes but was disappointed. I thought this book skewed heavily toward Norm rather than being close to the midpoint between Norm and Roy. Marc has some really good content in the early archives on his site, so I was hopeful about this book. Marc is a professional and everything he does is done with an eye toward being profitable. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, but his woodworking goals are different than the amateur’s. He prizes e...

Wooden Boxes, Skill-building techniques for seven unique projects.

Fellow LJ Dennis Zongker has produced a really fine book that will be valuable to furniture makers and box makers alike. At 240 photo filled pages he explains how to make several of his masterpieces that we Lumberjocks have marveled at when he first posted them. Dennis is really good at what he does, and it certainly shows up here. All done up in a rich, Taunton-quality publication. The book is structured around seven stunning projects, each covered in its own section. The reader can c...

Festool 2013 Tool Catalog

Festool 2013 Tool Catalog

276 days ago by libraryman | 22 comments »

Though not a tool in the strict sense, the Festool 2013 tool catalog has provided me with hours of interesting speculation and tool comparisons. I should state from the beginning that I do not own a Festool and will probably never be able to afford one. The power tools I have been able to afford are the reason I love looking at the Festools. Whilst my power tools do an adequate job, the lack of vision by their manufacturers provide a sad “what might have been” comparison with the Festools. T...

One of the Best books I have read on Wood Finishing

One of the Best books I have read on Wood Finishing

While I try to grow, and become a more experienced finisher I have ran into some roadblocks along the way. Like most of us have, I’m sure. A few Lumberjocks recommended this book by Bob Flexner. I must say I will always keep this book close. Another fellow LJ posted the words below as well and I agreed so I used his review as well. Thx, Jeff. Most everyone would benefit from this book. While this is not a tool, this book has earned its spot as one of my most useful assets in my shop....

Must-Have Books for Plane Collectors!!!

Although this book has been mentioned a few times, I don’t know of a formal review here, so here goes: Volume I and II, “Patented Transitional & Metallic Planes in America” is an astounding body of research on the development of handplanes made since 1827. The research deals with planes from 1827 to 1927 in volume I and 1927 to the present in volume II. In it you will find data from the US Patent Office, as well as blueprints, logos, and advertising literature for th...
