Cookies in the shop . . . mmmm.

So, I’ve been eyeing these silly things for about two years now wondering how would I use them and would it really be worth having. Well, I finally picked up a set at Rockler on sale for $8 last week and decided to use them for finishing a top to an end table. My old Unisaw serves double duty as a workbench/finish assembly talbe in my garage so I put down newspaper and the table top sits on the cookies. What I noticed was now nice it is to lay down wipe on poly on the surface and just ...

Hey all, just want to show off my new “FN Banadana”!(Patent Pending) I know what you’re thinking and the “FN” doesn’t stand for what you think it does! It’s a Fitted Nose Banadana. Much like your dust masks in the shop, this bandana has a metal strip sewn in the center that you can form around your nose to keep from breathing the dust in. Designed by a motorcycle rider to keep from fogging up her glasses, the FN Bandana has many other uses as well:...

Great Shop Apron

Great Shop Apron

10-01-2012 09:41 PM by 47phord | 11 comments »

Tired of being covered in sawdust at the end of the day and constantly searching around for commonly used tools (you know the drill, “Dammit! where did I set my square at now? Where my pencil roll off to? Ugh!”) I went on the hunt for an apron. I initially asked my wife-who likes to sew-if she could make me one. She looked for a pattern and had no luck, that is unless I wanted a frilly, flower-print apron like Grandma used to wear in the kitchen, but found this one after a qu...

Dylos DC1100 PRO with Serial Interface: Evaluation and Testing

The DC1100 PRO (with Serial Interface) is a true laser particle counter with the ability to count particulate mater suspended the air. There are two size ranges for the PRO model: between 0.5 and 2.5 microns, and greater than 2.5 microns. Several models are available but I felt that for a woodworking shop the stuff less than 2.5 microns was the most important particulate to measure since it is probably the most dangerous. This was purchased through a group buy offered by the Canadian woo...

Work well, annoying to adjust

Work well, annoying to adjust

I used two of these for my cross cut sled I just made. At 5.99 each, they looked like a good value. I was unable to find many reviews on line, so I figured I would give them a shot. The goodThey can be clamped down pretty tight to hold the piece in placeThey are inexpensive (~6.00)Everything turns well on the bolt. No stripping The BadI don’t like the design. These have two locking mechanisms. There is a knurled knob at the bottom that locks the bolt to the track. After locked to ...

Tool Band-It By Billy Mays!

OK, Don’t laugh. My wife was browsing through a small Korean Dollar store in College Station whilst I was doing some serious research at Harbor Freight. In a big tub of discounted stuff that she found was a whole pile of “Tool Bandit’s” magnetic arm bands. She bought one on a whim, for 50ยข and put it in the trunk with the rest of her loot. When we got home she gave it to me I was somewhat surprised and the first thing I noticed was the weight of the thing. Probably...

How to clean your shop(and other places too)I have the blessed opportunity to use a very good friend’s shop whenever I want. There are two really good things about working there: 1) He has sattellite radio piped in. That means I can listen to 50’s music all day long. He was listening to it before I got there so there’s no battle on what station to set it on. He also likes gospel music from time to time which I also enjoy. A great environment, and a very gracious friend to...
