David Barron Tools Dovetail Guide

David Barron Tools Dovetail Guide

128 days ago by rdwile | 10 comments »

I bought the David Barron Dovetail Guide last summer when I ordered a couple other things from David. I played with the guide and watched David's YouTube video on how to use it. So then I figured I was ready to cut some dovetails! I tried it out to get the hang of it on some scrap and then moved right into cutting the dovetails on my Tommy Mac Tool Chest. The fact that this was my first dovetail project ever in carcase construction is a testament to how easy this guide its to get used t...

Gang, This tray from McMaster (http://www.mcmaster.com/#food-service-trays/=bwr90d) will improve your life and make you a better person. A small one is $15 and a godzilla sized one is $35. Here’s how: —It is a waterproof tray whose antiskid surface will perfectly and TOTALLY immobilize a waterstone.—The low lip on the edge of the tray is lower than the top of most waterstones, so you won’t bang your blades or hands into its edges (I have Nortons and here is ...

I bought a solid oak cabinet at the prison industries auction 2 years ago. I brought it home and hung it in the garage. I am starting to clean out the garage where my new shop is going to go. I was taking the screws out of a brace on the bottom of the cabinet. While holding on to a 2 X 4 fastened on the side of the cabinet, it felt like it moved. I got to looking and this is what I found. It is a Prison Shank!!!!! You figure out what it could layout.

Heating the shop

Summer is arriving. But, winter will be back. If you live in a cool climate I’d like to share my experiences with shop heat with you. I see a lot of people in blogs who say that they’d like to work but it’s too cold or they just have to wait for warmer weather. I found my cold weather answer. Not a tool but an important shop item just the same. I’ve been in my shop 2-4 days a week this winter. The winter has been cold in maine. Last year when I was renovating I deci...

Simple Green PRO HD excells at cleaning saw blades

Simple Green PRO HD excells at cleaning saw blades

901 days ago by pintodeluxe | 16 comments »

I heard that soaking carbide tipped blades in simple green can leach carbide from the metal. I emailed simple green and a rep confirmed that the standard simple green should not be used to soak carbide tipped blades. He recommended two other simple green products that have no such problem: 1. Simple Green Pro HD 2. Simple Green Aircraft parts cleaner I found the simple green Pro HD at my local Home Depot. It is the purple stuff and is sold in a 1 gallon concentrate for around $13. I...

The Best Compact Light Bulb at the Best Price

The Best Compact Light Bulb at the Best Price

Several months ago i needed to replace some incandescent light bulbs that were burned out. So while waiting for a prescription at the local drug store I was checking out the houseware departent & bumped into the new Compact Florescent Light Bulbs. The price wasn’t too bad so I decided to try a box of the 100 watt equivalent. I found that they were very bright, didn’t get as hot as regular light bulbs & best of all used only 23 Watts of energy. I also found that even th...

Heavy Duty wheel casters

Heavy Duty wheel casters

Like many, I make mobile base’s for all of my shop equipment. I have used plastic, rubber metal etc. And while they serve their purpose, they have many short falls. The plastic and metal ones hang up on every chip of wood and piece of trash on your floor, and have terrible locking systems. The rubber ones while they do roll much easier across the floor, still have the same lousy locking system, and develop flat spots when they sit for a extended time. Recently while I was at my ...

Harbor Freight Tools Work Bench affordable and useful

Harbor Freight Tools Work Bench affordable and useful

I bought this Bench on sale for 159 dollars. plus tax for a total of 175.( I know TN sales tax is high). The Bench was easily put together in about 2 hours. I have to say for the money I dont think you could buy the wood to make your own workbench. I needed a workbench instead of using a door setting on top of 2 old speakers as a work table. The table top is flat and is finger jointed oak, The drawer sides and bottoms are not solid oak but MDF. All the rest of the bench is oak. The inst...

Prodex insulation for the garage door

Prodex insulation for the garage door

1232 days ago by brianl | 9 comments »

Like most of the U.S., we’ve been having some really chilly weather lately. I do most of my work out of the garage and even with a space heater I’ve been getting pretty cold. I had a tube of liquid nails basically freeze up on me so I figured it was time to make some changes. Our garage door is a tight two-car made up of four rows of four panels. Each panel measuring roughly 21 inches high by four feet across making the door 7 feet high by 16 feet across. 112 square feet. ...

I build Maloof inspired rockers and chairs for customers as well as teaching classes and producing instructional bundles for my chairs. You can see my work at www.charlesbrockchairmaker.com. Some of my hobbies include playing guitar, dobro and own several other string instruments. Recently, I was surfing a supply and tool site for luthiers called Stew-Mac. I saw a tool called “The Luthier’s Friend.” It was designed to sand small strips of binding or wood that are used to ...
