Plane Restorers Take Note!!!

Plane Restorers Take Note!!!

217 days ago by poopiekat | 20 comments »

After seeing some plane restorations by LJ ‘ToddJB’ back in December, I was glad to see someone asked him how he got such a terrific surface on the sides of his planes. His ‘workhorse’ as he referred to it, was a simple burnishing wheel! He claimed it would take a plane from rusty to shiny in one step! I had to have one of these, a hundred of my planes are in queue for restoration, and it’s taking me forever! So, I purchased a 3M burnishing wheel, the exact...

Excellent value - Nothing close at this price point.

Excellent value - Nothing close at this price point.

I’ve been wanting to separate my mechanical tools from my woodworking stuff. I purchased this roller cabinet recently at Harbor Freight after weeks of failed searching for a used Snap-On unit in my price range. It gets quite good reviews on Harbor Freight’s website and another independent forum. Pros:Excellent price point – With $349.99 coupon, I was out the door under $400 with tax.Heavy gauge steel sheet used in construction. – Weighs nearly 300lbs.Durable powder ...

Carpenter Jeans Made in America

Carpenter Jeans Made in America

1791 days ago by firecaster | 17 comments »

Ok, I know this isn’t about a tool or gadget but most of us wear pants when we work in the shop. Although a couple of LJs I’m not sure of. We hear a lot about the US manufacturing going over seas. These jeans are made in America, with American grown cotton. Actually close to where I like to trout fish in Blue Ridge Georgia. Besides that there are several other things I like about these jeans:1. Comfort. They fit me well. There’s plenty of room in the legs and seat for the...

Excellent Wood Cleaner

Excellent Wood Cleaner

Not a great tale of restoration as others in LJs post, but a review that confirms what others told me: “BAR KEEPERS FRIEND” is a very capable cleaner for wood tools. In this case, of Stanley No. 32 rule that had certainly seen better aesthetic days. As shown above, the ruler was not very legible when I got it. Here’s the rule from a farther distance. I posted a couple pictures of my flea market find on the Marking and Measuring thread and a discussion ensued re: wa...

Some seriously slippery surfaces.

Some seriously slippery surfaces.

211 days ago by BennyG | 17 comments »

This product is used to lubricate any surface in the shop where drag and hang ups across in feed/out feed tables, fences and the like are problematic. Used in place of silicone or other lubricants that would contaminate the woods/materials surface and create a build up of lube and sawdust on equipment and machinery. I have used a similar more expensive product in a few of the larger production shops that I have worked in over the years and have seen first-hand the benefits of using a dry l...

Simple Green PRO HD excells at cleaning saw blades

Simple Green PRO HD excells at cleaning saw blades

1354 days ago by pintodeluxe | 16 comments »

I heard that soaking carbide tipped blades in simple green can leach carbide from the metal. I emailed simple green and a rep confirmed that the standard simple green should not be used to soak carbide tipped blades. He recommended two other simple green products that have no such problem: 1. Simple Green Pro HD 2. Simple Green Aircraft parts cleaner I found the simple green Pro HD at my local Home Depot. It is the purple stuff and is sold in a 1 gallon concentrate for around $13. I...

Decent Sander for the Price (using Coupon)

Decent Sander for the Price (using Coupon)

Found a Harbor Freight coupon for this in the latest issue of Wood Magazine for $49.95 (lists for $99.99), so I thought I would run down to my local Harbor Freight and check out the “floor model”. After looking it over I decided to go ahead and make the purchase. It unpacked easily and was a breeze to setup. Basically just have to attached the table. For the most part this is a pretty decent machine for the price, good cast iron parts except for the table and the disk; which ...

Tool Band-It By Billy Mays!

Tool Band-It By Billy Mays!

OK, Don’t laugh. My wife was browsing through a small Korean Dollar store in College Station whilst I was doing some serious research at Harbor Freight. In a big tub of discounted stuff that she found was a whole pile of “Tool Bandit’s” magnetic arm bands. She bought one on a whim, for 50ยข and put it in the trunk with the rest of her loot. When we got home she gave it to me I was somewhat surprised and the first thing I noticed was the weight of the thing. Probably...

Kreg Pocket hole jig Jr.

Kreg Pocket hole jig Jr.

I’ve been using this Kreg jig Jr. for over a year now, and it’s well worth the money. It works great and I’m very happy with it. Only a few issues but the price is great! Positives--Includes drill bit, drill bit stop, a driver bit for square head screws, square head screws, plugs, the manual, the case, and the jig. All of these things work great.-It’s small size can fit in tight areas. Negatives--It’s hard to keep the jig from sliding around, you have to cl...

Gunning for Shop Safety and Comfort

Gunning for Shop Safety and Comfort

When you have a tricky cut on the table saw, both hands on a router or lathe tool – you can count on it – that’s when a fly will start biting. And, that’s when I stop and reach for the Bug-A-Salt. Biting insects are a serious distraction and a matter of shop safety and comfort. What’s a Bug-A-Salt? It is a lot of fun, but not a toy. It’s a high quality plastic, pump-action mini shotgun. A top fill container holds a couple table spoons of table salt....
