Hand cut dovetails--faster, cleaner, more precise. What's not to like?

Hand cut dovetails--faster, cleaner, more precise. What's not to like?

26 days ago by JayT | 33 comments »

Like many woodworkers, I wanted to learn to make hand cut dovetails, but struggled with getting a precise joint. After some disappointing early results, I was ready to either quit or get some help. Somewhere along the line I had seen a blog post that linked a David Barron video where he used a magnetic saw guide. I decided to bite the bullet and purchase one of the 1:5 guides and hope that helped my joinery. I know that traditionally dovetails are 1:8 or 1:6, but since the ratio is fa...

My First New Tool For New Shop - What is it?

My First New Tool For New Shop - What is it?

I bought a solid oak cabinet at the prison industries auction 2 years ago. I brought it home and hung it in the garage. I am starting to clean out the garage where my new shop is going to go. I was taking the screws out of a brace on the bottom of the cabinet. While holding on to a 2 X 4 fastened on the side of the cabinet, it felt like it moved. I got to looking and this is what I found. It is a Prison Shank!!!!! You figure out what it could layout.

Heating the shop

5 year update:After about 5 years this heater is still working, still heating my shop up to shirt temperatures quickly and costing me about $100/yr to run when I use it often. Needs blowing out with air each season but still starting and running well. Summer is arriving. But, winter will be back. If you live in a cool climate I’d like to share my experiences with shop heat with you. I see a lot of people in blogs who say that they’d like to work but it’s too cold or they ...

I was lucky enough to win this branding iron in a contest this summer on Lumberjocks. You can check out my winning contest entry on My Lumberjocks Blog. I’ve had one of these on my tool list for a long time. I’d look at them, but I never took any action. I wished I’d bought one of these many years ago now. I highly recommend this tool to all Woodworkers, & Carvers. When you order this tool you can talk directly to the owner Terry Desilets. He is ver...

The Best Compact Light Bulb at the Best Price

The Best Compact Light Bulb at the Best Price

Several months ago i needed to replace some incandescent light bulbs that were burned out. So while waiting for a prescription at the local drug store I was checking out the houseware departent & bumped into the new Compact Florescent Light Bulbs. The price wasn’t too bad so I decided to try a box of the 100 watt equivalent. I found that they were very bright, didn’t get as hot as regular light bulbs & best of all used only 23 Watts of energy. I also found that even th...

great finishing light

I was at lowes lastnight during one of my weekly shopping trips there and decided i needed a light for my bench. The overhead lights are just not bright enough for detailed work and there are oo many shadows. It is esp hard when i am doing finish. I was just looking for a regular desk lamp when i found this one with some neatextras. It has an outlet on the base and a swivel base wih compartments for “pencils” or whatever wood working tools i want toput in it. Maybe it jas just bee...

Harbor Freight Tools Work Bench affordable and useful

Harbor Freight Tools Work Bench affordable and useful

I bought this Bench on sale for 159 dollars. plus tax for a total of 175.( I know TN sales tax is high). The Bench was easily put together in about 2 hours. I have to say for the money I dont think you could buy the wood to make your own workbench. I needed a workbench instead of using a door setting on top of 2 old speakers as a work table. The table top is flat and is finger jointed oak, The drawer sides and bottoms are not solid oak but MDF. All the rest of the bench is oak. The inst...

Bar Keeper's Friend - Great for surface rust removal

Bar Keeper's Friend - Great for surface rust removal

286 days ago by Cereal4Dinner | 20 comments »

I buy most of my tools used, and that usually entails cleaning up metal surfaces that have been left sitting. For tables and other flat surfaces, I use Bar Keeper’s Friend since it is a mild acid that breaks up rust pretty effectively and it’s cheap. I’ve uploaded some before and after pics of my bandsaw table. It doesn’t clean/polish the table 100% but it definitely makes huge difference. 20 minutes with a green scrubbing pad followed up with some paste wax, and t...
