Spyderco Bench Stone

Spyderco Bench Stone

I can’t say enough good about these stones. I have a medium and a fine. The fine I have had for over a year and I use it on a regular basis and it still shows no ware. With the fine I can take my tools edge to a mirror finish. The thing I like about using ceramics is that it is clean. You do not have to use water or oil on these stones. For clean up I use a rubber pencil eraser just like we used in school. And if it gets to bad I use a little water, Comet and a green scouring pad. I hav...

The Chisel Doctor (Honing Guide)

The Chisel Doctor (Honing Guide)

02-22-2012 12:26 AM by Roger | 13 comments »

While going nuts for a long long time over sharpening chisels, & plane irons, I came across this USA made honing guide from Garrett Wade http://www.garrettwade.com/the-chisel-doctor/p/58A01.01/ It’s a little expensive, but, I don’t think too badly at 45 bux. It is very well made with dual wheels instead of the type that has a single wheel in the middle, 2 brass knurled knobs very nicely counter sunk, and a very nice coating of wrinkle paint. The Chisel Doctor is well worth ...

Veritas® Jointer/Edger for card scraper

Veritas® Jointer/Edger for card scraper

This is the file holder from Veritas for card scrapers. Works great for putting a new edge on card scrapers after the burr is worn out. Takes only a couple of seconds to file the edge and get it ready to burnish or you can leave it as is after filing for heavy (as heavy as you can get with a card scraper anyway) material removal. I would recommend this for anyone wanting a good jig for their card scrapers.

A decent sharpener, but be careful!

A decent sharpener, but be careful!

My Work Sharp has a knife sharpening attachment, but the missus doesn’t always want to go out the the shop to sharpen her kitchen knives. So I thought I’d try out the Work Sharp Knife and Tool Sharpener. Besides, i’m a sucker for anything that comes in one of those fancy canvass tool bags! It’s a self contained, hand held machine that comes out of the drawer and plugs into the wall in seconds faster than you can say “get out the knife sharpener and plug it int...

Excellent Edge Inspection Tool

Excellent Edge Inspection Tool

We deal with a lot of edges – planer & jointer blades, hand plane blades, chisels, saws, etc. Even with 20/20 vision, the naked eye can’t really see well enough to know how nicked up an edge is or whether you really did hone all of the scratches out. I found this little LED lighted magnifying glass by Rosallini on Amazon for ~$8 (I just checked and it’s down to $3.73). I figured if it didn’t work I hadn’t lost much, but to my surprise it works very well. The ...

Knife Sharpening the easy way

Knife Sharpening the easy way

Not really a woodworking tool, but some of you may find this useful. I have recently started to try my hand at knife making (which is way fun – more on that later) but have always found it tricky to get a really good edge on a curved blade – I know the theory well enough, but somehow I can never quite translate theory into practice. Anyway, a few weeks ago I was perusing amazon.com and stumbled across this Professional Fixed-angle Knife Sharpener System The Amazon blurb was a ...

Trend Diamond Whetstone Kit, Up For Review

Trend Diamond Whetstone Kit, Up For Review

The things that make this kit great are that it’s quick and easy to use. Woodworkers are famous for “being one tool away from greatness”. Well, I’m here to say that as far as sharpening my hand tools goes, I’m set and this is the only sharpening kit I’ll be using. I’d highly recommend this product to professional and hobbyist woodworkers alike. For my complete tool review check out the post, Trend Diamond Whetstone Kit, Up For Review. Thanks ...

Simplicity with Perfection

Simplicity with Perfection

One of the first purchases I made was a Veritas sharpening jig. I had been researching woodworking for several years before buying a single tool while I attended MTU. One thing I noticed time and time again was the fact that tools must be sharp. Beyond sharp they must be properly sharp, with a proper angle, back bevel and micro bevel! After much intimidation about the whole process I decided to pick up the Veritas jig. I purchased it in the full kit with an included waterstone to get me go...

Well worth the extra upfront cost!!

Well worth the extra upfront cost!!

I purchased the Veritas Mark II honing guide from my local Woodcraft store (not sure if they all do it this way, but it was kept behind a door at mine, wasn’t with the other honing guides (for good reason). I took it home, and got it out of it’s packaging, and inspected. The thing that I noticed first was the heft. It is well cast, and the brass knobs are beautifully machined. First impression: high quality tool. The instruction manual is a lengthy read, but super well writ...

A goof proof sharpening system

A goof proof sharpening system

02-09-2014 05:54 PM by CharlesA | 9 comments »

I will admit at the beginning that I have never used the scary sharp, the Paul Sellers method, Tormek, or other sharpening systems. A year ago I got my first good set of chisels and started with some vintage Stanley planes. I stopped by my local Woodcraft and asked what they recommended for sharpening, and I picked up this Veritas Mk II and some Japanese water stones. Good: You don’t have to know a lot. There are lots of possible settings for every kind of chisel and plane. It...
