Great Honing Guide

Great Honing Guide

This is from the hand written notes of Richard: The blade is clamped onto and makes contact with the underside of the two stainless steel location rods, these being the primary location datum. How far the cutting edge projects determines the honing angle. For example clamp up at 5/8” (16mm) and the blade will make an angle of 25 degrees to the sharpening surface. Measurement is taken from the side of the stainless steel rod to the cutting edge. A strip of wood with an accurate shoulder cou...

Honing Guide

Honing Guide

Bought this and was very surprised. My other honing guide clamps on the sides and edges for the larger blades and has a triangle to hold the smaller chisels and blades. This honing guide clamps on the flat side of the blade and holds it. The guide I give 5 stars. The guide comes with a piece of stick on rubber which I put on the anvil of the guide so that the blade does not move around. The anvil, as I call it, has scribed lines to show if your blade is square to the guide, the rubber ...

Diamond hones sharpen your router bits and chisels

Diamond hones sharpen your router bits and chisels

I really like these little diamond hones for sharpening carbide router bits. Just a few strokes on the back, flat edge of your bits will restore a sharp edge. Comes with three grits. This can save you money and avoid throwing away dull bits, or worse yet ruining expensive lumber.Worth a try.

Chicago Electric Circular Saw Blade Sharpener

Chicago Electric Circular Saw Blade Sharpener

Addendum after 72 days: My old dewalt blade seen on the bench in the video below is what I sharpened next. I sharpened up pretty nicely. In fact I’m leaving it in the saw for a bed build and I’ve been working with Walnut, maple, and jatoba for this. So far the blade that I sharpened has been working really well. So well in fact that I think I’ll spruce up this sharpener with new knobs, and a few washers to help align things. I’m upping my rating a star. I’d se...

Glad I finally got this

Glad I finally got this

I bought a cabinet scraper a few years ago and have really enjoyed using it. I was able to make small shavings with it right out of the box, but of course it dulled after a while. I looked at various tutorials online to learn how to sharpen it and tried to use the same techniques. I didn’t have a burnisher so I tried a variety of stand-ins: screw driver, drill bit, router bit. I was able to sharpen my scraper enough to still use it, but I could never get a good burr on it. I could on...

WORKSHARP WS3000 Great sharpner - I'm in love

WORKSHARP WS3000 Great sharpner - I'm in love

12-27-2011 09:47 PM by woodmaker | 32 comments »

I received the Work Sharp 3000 for Xmas. I absolutely love this thing. Dry sharpen, no water, no mess. I sharpened 5 chisels and one plane iron in about an hour (maybe less). The only reason I didn’t give it a 5th star is because I have one plane iron slightly over 2” and it doesn’t fit the ramp so I can’t sharpen it on the machine. I have to load the iron in a jig and sharpen from the top. The plane iron might be 2 1/8” at the most. I mean come on! I...

Spyderco Bench Stone

Spyderco Bench Stone

I can’t say enough good about these stones. I have a medium and a fine. The fine I have had for over a year and I use it on a regular basis and it still shows no ware. With the fine I can take my tools edge to a mirror finish. The thing I like about using ceramics is that it is clean. You do not have to use water or oil on these stones. For clean up I use a rubber pencil eraser just like we used in school. And if it gets to bad I use a little water, Comet and a green scouring pad. I hav...

Veritas® Jointer/Edger for card scraper

Veritas® Jointer/Edger for card scraper

This is the file holder from Veritas for card scrapers. Works great for putting a new edge on card scrapers after the burr is worn out. Takes only a couple of seconds to file the edge and get it ready to burnish or you can leave it as is after filing for heavy (as heavy as you can get with a card scraper anyway) material removal. I would recommend this for anyone wanting a good jig for their card scrapers.

A decent sharpener, but be careful!

A decent sharpener, but be careful!

My Work Sharp has a knife sharpening attachment, but the missus doesn’t always want to go out the the shop to sharpen her kitchen knives. So I thought I’d try out the Work Sharp Knife and Tool Sharpener. Besides, i’m a sucker for anything that comes in one of those fancy canvass tool bags! It’s a self contained, hand held machine that comes out of the drawer and plugs into the wall in seconds faster than you can say “get out the knife sharpener and plug it int...
