Big Bang For Buck Belt Sharpener

Big Bang For Buck Belt Sharpener

129 days ago by HorizontalMike | 34 comments »

I had been toying with the idea of getting into Woodturning for some time and the opportunity presented itself, so I started some serious planning. One of the things that goes along with Woodturning is the ability to sharpen your own turning tools. At the time I did NOT own a mechanized sharpening machine/system and had to rely on manually sharpening all of my planes and chisels with the “Scary Sharp” sandpaper to stone methodology. Don’t get me wrong, that system works a...

WS3000 Wide Blade Attachment - Fixed!

WS3000 Wide Blade Attachment - Fixed!

1038 days ago by BigJimAK | 16 comments »

I recently picked up a WorkSharp 3000 after trying my hand at tuning some bevel-up Veritas 3/16” thick A2 steel plane blades. The instructions say to attach the wide blade guide, leveling it with the sharpening sandpaper. Unfortunately, it won’t go down that far, because the inside of some of the supports squeeze against a raised piece of the machine. Sooo… I got out my Dremel and a carborundum cutting wheel and trimmed them back. I’ve attached a picture showing where ...

DMT's Magna-Disc Sharpening System honing system

DMT's Magna-Disc Sharpening System honing system

I have a worksharp 3000. {review of worksharp 3000} I use it every time I am in the shop. It is great for touch-up on a chisel and your right back to work. Because I hone more than anything else, I was in need to replace my 1000 and 3600 grits. If you get the replacements from Worksharp it can get pricey. The 1000 is a dollar and the 3600 is about five bucks. So I found DMT’s Magna-Disc Sharpening System for about 50 bucks from amazon. I received it and followed the directions in the b...

Cuts Fast, Cool, and without burning a hole in your pocket

Cuts Fast, Cool, and without burning a hole in your pocket

I got my VS grinder a while back after getting my lathe to sharpen my HSS bits and for the longest time was plain disappointed by how long and how hard it was to shape and sharpen those bits, and always considered replacing the factory supplied wheels with after market replacements… I should have done that much sooner! There are many alternatives out there, and I ended up going for the blue and white aluminum oxide wheels from CGW (at the moment of this writing sold by wholesale t...

Deulen Planer Sharpener

Deulen Planer Sharpener

Due to the length of planer knives you need to purchase two of the above knife holders to properly hold and sharpen planer knives. I have only used them once and they worked very well and quickly put a very sharp edge on my knives. I purchased the knife holders on EBay. The item number is 250557952917. Dan Deulen is the inventor/manufacturer of the holders and he can be contacted at telephone number 360-601-1744 or at 11311 NE Stutz Road, Vancouver, WA 98685. It is my opinion that he is...

Norton Multi-Oilstone IM313 - I think this is my last sharpening system - updated with video

I have been looking at this system for a couple of years now. I finally decided to click the buy button and I’m glad I did. Like most of you, I have tried a lot of sharpening systems. Here are the ones I have tried and the reasons I decided to buy this one and lay the rest aside. Scary Sharp - A good system if you like buying sandpaper all the time. I used it for a long time. The cost of consumables quickly adds up. Work Sharp - A good system but ditto on the consumables. ...

Shop Made Honing Machine

Shop Made Honing Machine

I was communicating in a project from dbhost about this honing machine so I thought I would share it here. I got this motor (1/2 hp 1750rpm) from Metal Mike, a nieghbor, same guy who traded a working drll press for a broken band saw. I took 2 peices of MDF and glued them together, roughed a circle, about 10” diameter, then mounted it on my lathe. I turned it into a perfect circle, lathes are good at that. I then purchased a work arbor from woodcraft, I think $14. Mounted the MDF ci...

Versatile, Affordable Sharpening System

Versatile, Affordable Sharpening System

I’m new to turning, and it didn’t take long to figure out I needed a way to sharpen tools. I picked up a slow-speed (1725 rpm) grinder when Woodcraft had them on sale a few weeks ago. I’ve been watching YouTube videos posted by Eddie Castelin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdchP8ZYUCc), and decided to try a sharpening system he builds … the Blawkhawk Sharpening System. It sells for a fraction of the price of other systems, and delivers excellent results. With...

Great scraper burnisher

Great scraper burnisher

490 days ago by Tennwood | 12 comments »

I had a Woodcraft coupon about to expire and no other great needs at the time, so I bought the Veritas Variable Burnisher on a whim. (Actually what I went in for they didn’t have in stock that day). I normally sharpen my scrapers using a wet stone and round burnisher getting ok results. I can always get shavings, but not like they should be. Retail cost of the Veritas is $32.50, but with my coupon, I figured I couldn’t loose too much. It turned out to be a great deal. The i...
