Rockler's remarkable red rubber sanding block

Rockler's remarkable red rubber sanding block

03-13-2012 06:37 AM by DHS | 6 comments »

I purchased a sanding block for the first time yesterday. I had taken my mother to lunch on Sunday afternoon and then to reward myself for this good deed I visited the local Rockler Woodworking store and browsed the discount racks. I bought some sanding disks, a quart of Titebond III, some space balls, and then just for the heck of it, I purchased a rubber sanding block for $3.99. What a wonderful device. I don’t know why I’ve never used one before. Perhaps it was my abrasive high-school...

Bigger is not always better

Bigger is not always better

03-12-2012 05:01 AM by Sawdust4Blood | 10 comments »

Sadly this is my one Ridgid tool that has turned out to be a disappointment. I confess that I hate sanding and the thought that a larger, more powerful ROS might get me done sanding sooner may have seduced me into choosing this sander about 18 months ago when my faithful 20 year old Porter Cable gave up the ghost. Unfortunately, when it comes to ROSs, bigger is not always better. This sander is heavy and it’s size makes it cumbersome in many applications as well as being difficult ...

Grizzly inflatable drum / flap sander

Grizzly inflatable drum / flap sander

The only other review I could find on this sander was posted 1300 days ago. I found this machine on Craigslist about six months ago and have used it quite a bit since. It is a beast of power. Very straight forward and simple to operate. I have used and wasted my money on many smaller flap sanders on the drill press with less than great results. This machine will cut your sanding time WAY down. It will take square edges and round them over quickly and accurately. Projects such as cutt...

Festool RO 125 FEQ

Festool RO 125 FEQ

Whenever Festool is mentioned, there are always two totally different responses. One is–I absolutely love it and can’t wait until I can buy more of their products, and two–it is way overpriced and there is no way I’ll ever spend that much on a power tool! Maybe, just maybe, both answers are actually very valid, depending on your needs. I do ask though, have you actually used the tool? If your opinion is based only on price, you may not be quite fair. Being a professional woodworker for ...

Improved switch design, great dust collection

Improved switch design, great dust collection

Update: I’ve owned this sander now for over a year, and it has gotten a lot of use. It’s been a great tool with no problems, so I’ll leave the five stars in place. The original review follows: I haven’t had this sander long yet, so my 5 star rating is based ondesign and recent performance. After I have used it for a longerperiod of time, I’ll come back and update my rating if warranted. I really want to comment on two aspects of the sander design. First,t...

Sandvik Sandplates replacement product

Years ago..I bought a whole bunch of the Sandvik Sandplates in a clearance bin, and as most who know this product, also know’s they’ve been discontinued.. This company sells something very similar and works just as good.. I have also heard of the SandDevil and they’re great too.. I wrote a blog on these if anyone is interested in reading it.. I give them a 5 star because quite frankly..they work like a 5 star.. read the blog and I tell how I use them on my chairs.. http:/...

Delta 18-36 x5 drum sander.

Delta 18-36 x5 drum sander.

First off Thanks to Joe Lydon who introduced me to his buddy Bob that was selling this sander. I mentioned to him I was going to buy one and he told me about a buddy that had one that he never used. I’m not normally good at buying used stuff, but I trusted Joe. Bod said, “If I didn’t like it I could return it for a refund.” (Who does that now a day?) Not a bad deal for used sander. I was shocked how clean this was when I arrived. We agreed on the price and off we went. 5 stars t...

Old belt disc sander but in great shape

Old belt disc sander but in great shape

01-22-2012 10:47 PM by ic3ss | 7 comments »

This is a Craigslist find that I picked up a while ago. It was made in mid-late 1970’s I believe. I had to do just a little cleaning up on it but it ran fine, but it has a lot of vibration. It’s heavy, cast iron everything above the stand, but it does vibrate a lot. The bearings seem smooth enough, I wonder if I just need to replace the belt. Oh well, I’ve been using it on a project I’m doing for my daughter for the last few weeks and it works fine. For as old as it is...

Does it's Job for a Great Price

Does it's Job for a Great Price

I had been in the market for a combination belt/disc sander for quite some time and read as much as I could on all the various brands. I landed on the Craftsman one primarily for the attractive price (and the encouragement of my father-in-law who has had one for who knows how many years), however, comparing its specs to other competing sanders, in nearly every category it scored as good if not better. For starters, this sander is heavy at around 85 lbs, and so much so that I have not had ...

Ridgid EB4424 Oscillating Edge Belt / Spindle Sander

Ridgid EB4424 Oscillating Edge Belt / Spindle Sander

These have been reviewed a bit by others, but I just want to add a resounding “This is a great tool” to the heap. Lumberjock YBNORMAL lives in the same town as I do, so when he told me his was great and gets lots of use I had to take the plunge. I found it still priced at $199 at the BORG. I snagged a Husky support table at the same time ($35) so that I could mount this sander to it and have it a floor model from day one. Very sturdy when joined and perfect height for me. ...
